  1. Thanks all. Does anyone know of anybody who wants to buy a good spec, AX blocked, dry sumped 1800 Xflow ? :) Edit: Yes Les, looking for a winter project to do and a new BlackTop is definitely tempting. Don't suppose any of your mates are looking for a Xflow... May see you over the summer? Edited by - jonboylaw on 1 Jun 2011 21:35:03
  2. If I instal a brand new engine into a '92 chassis, what requirements are there in terms of emmissions etc... would I need to fit a CAT or is it the chassis/1st registration date that is counted ?
  3. I would be interested unlocked..... £75 + P&P ?
  4. Thanks all, Retro-ford seem to be the boys, they even supply a Zetec Exhaust Manifold so I could use my current down pipes etc... This is starting to look a lot like a winter project. Out of interest, what is the relative weight difference between an AX Xflow and a Blacktop Zetec ? Now how much is the Xflow worth these days ?
  5. Hi, I used some green coated garden wire and threaded that through 1st, then wrapped it around the wires and pulled it back through.
  6. Thanks Roger, I really appreciate your time to look this up. The carbs were overhauled last year and new needle jets were fitted as part of that. I think the best thing for me to do is to get a rolling road session booked and see what we get. Out of interest, what power did the engine make then? Regards, Edited by - jonboylaw on 31 May 2011 23:08:42 Edited by - jonboylaw on 31 May 2011 23:11:02
  7. Thanks guys, I am starting to build up a picture. I have a 5 speed box and bell housing, good altenator, twin 40's, mega jolt, electric fuel pump. Clutch was new 1k miles ago so would possibly be ok if it fits... So, would need: Engine Mounts Water Rail Sump Manifold (inlet and exhaust) Altenator bracket water pump pully hoses bits and bobs.... Hmmm, it is starting to look tempting....
  8. Thanks BOSS/Paul. Sorry for the Hijak Mike. Edited by - jonboylaw on 31 May 2011 21:10:30
  9. I know several of you out there have done this conversion so I am wondering if anyone can give me a "realistic" price for this conversion. I see brand new engines coming in at about £700, but what about the ancilliaries and fuelling? I am guessing I would also need to move to an injected fuel tank if I go for throttle bodies... Currently I am running a Roger King 160 spec xflow (AX block) on twin 40's which I would sell to fund. So it would be my winter project...
  10. Good plan, wait for a rainy day and go through the wiring
  11. BOSS, who is suppying the BlackTops for that price? I am about to price up an xflow to Zetec conversion.
  12. Hi Roger, The Engine number is: VR 9306158 I believe the original work was carried out for Peter Murphy. Cheers
  13. The engine is one of Roger's 160 spec xflows (1800cc). I had it down at Northampton Motorsport a few years ago and they upped the mains and did a few other things, but we were not able ot get a power run in as the dizzy was not advancing. Now running a Megajolt so it should be simple. Does anyone (Roger maybe?) have recommended jetting for this engine I can use as a base line?
  14. Hi Roger, We took it through to about 4500 rpm and is was showing high through the range (not dipping below 6%) but I don't think we spent enough time to really see what it was showing. Will get it back down there later this week to get a good feeling of what is happening, then maybe splash the cash on an RR session.
  15. If you can post a photo of the diff nose so we can identify if it is Ital or Ford.
  16. I just had the MOT done on the Caterham (passed with flying colours). As it is a '92 car there was no requirment for emissions but out of interest we plugged it in the machine. So at idle I am at 6% CO rising to 9% at 2.5k rpm.... So I guess I am running a little rich 😳 That might explain the less than impressive fuel economy. So, any tips on where to start? I guess, I should 1st look at the jet sizes or just take it for a RR session with good carb man. 1800cc xFlow on twin 40s with Megajolt.
  17. John, Oliver stated that the missfire goes away when he switches back to the Dizzy so it does not sound like a fuelling problem. Jon
  18. Hi Oliver, if you have replaced all the HW, then look at the wiring and brackets and TPS (well they are the only things left to try.. ) 1st thing I would try is to plug in the Laptop and monitor the advance to make sure it is doing what is expected and look what happens at 4000RPM. Check that the load sites are moving correctly with throttle application. If that all looks good, then I would start checking all connectors and earth points to make sure there is not a dry joint or shielding issue. If you were close by I would loan you my plug leads etc.. Jon
  19. That is a healthy xflow, now go and drive it all summer :) Jon
  20. Well done in getting it sorted... you know thew next question don't you? What did she make ? spill the beans man... Jon
  21. I can't beleive you could not feel that the engine mounts had gone, surely you would hear clunks and bumps under accelleration, braking and cornering. Glad it is fixed though. Should make it part of your pre-blat inspection to check the mounts in future. Jon
  22. Les, Mine is a primitive immobilizer ;) Catch up some time mate, I hope. Jon
  23. Doh! ☹️ Thought it had gone quiet. Shame really. I wonder what the problem was, lessons learned and all that. Jon
  24. PSJ, It sounds like you want to keep the soul of the car and improve drivabilty/reliability.Sensible tweek is to get the engine back to stock power and improve drivability as said above. I fitted a MJ on my xflow beacuse I like to tinker and built it all from a kit, sourced and made the brackets etc... it still cost me about £250 in total to complete, but it made a massive difference to the drivability and reliability (starts easily thanks to 4deg advance on turn over rather than the 12 that a Dizzy provides)... and now get about 25mpg (160 spec RK Xflow). If you are looking for an Aldon, I think I have a low mileage one with side exit cap and coil (and rev limiter) available.
