  1. I would whip the scuttle off and have a look. Takes about 30 mins to get off and then everything will be clear. Hard to tell what you have done, but my guess would be there is a piece of wire where the insulation has rubbed off, and is now touching a piece of metal. There is also a large mutli connector that you may have dislodged.
  2. IIRC just 3 bolts, no loose springs. Just make sure it is in neutral as it comes out, as I seem to remember it can be a fiddle to get the new one to engage. Again, I may be wrong but I seem to remember having to wind it down the last cm by doing up alternate bolts.
  3. Although the last head gasket change I did on a crossflow was on a Mk3 Cortina, I am puzzled why you would need them? Put 2 bolts though the head, thread the gasket on, then locate the head and gasket in approximatly the right place on the block, then wiggle the bolts around until they engage. Or am I missing something?
  4. I had similar problems on my Xflow Turned out the battery really was dead. New battery and no problems since!

  11. Hi James That makes sense. I was convinced it was popping from the carbs, but perhaps not.. The gaskets are really good, but scarily expensive! The car is now running really well, but still VERY noisy!

  13. Ever since I rebuilt the car, it has suffered from 'popping' via the carbs, especially on the over-run. I thought this was a carb related issue. However, I have just fitted some 7 Workshop copper exhaust gaskets, to cure a persistent leak from the centre exhaust manifold, and not only has that worked, but the popping has gone too. Any ideas why?
  14. That is correct. There is no load on the springs when the car is jacked up off the suspension.
  15. Hi Roger I would favour buying some from a more recent vehicle secondhand. I think I paid £125 for a full set from a very low mileage vehicle that were as good as new. IMHO James, they are all the same age, so I would not just replace 1! I would also buy a bolt pack from Caterham and replace all the large bolts too. They are about £20 IIRC. John
  16. I would replace all 4 at once. I would also use new ones, or recent used from someone upgrading to widetrack. I would say allow a day to do both sides.

  18. A bit of a while since I did mine, but you will also, IIRC, need to run an earth wire to the reverse light switch. The 4 speed box only has a live feed, but the 5 speed needs a live and an earth. You can get your propshaft shortened, but Bradford Propshaft services did me a complete new one for £117 in a week so I went for that instead, delivered in less than a week.
  19. Taken from t'web..... Myth: Celery is negative calories. Truth: It is true that celery has almost no calories. A medium stalk contains all of 6 calories. It’s also pretty good for you in that a large stalk has about a gram of fiber and is high in calcium and trace minerals. Interestingly, celery is also fairly high in sodium for a vegetable at 50 mg for a large stalk. The theory that many people put forward is that your body uses more than 6 calories chewing and digesting the celery. There are actually books written about this but, unfortunately, there’s no research to support the claim. The body uses between 10 and 15% of the calories you consume for the total process of digestion. In someone consuming 1,500 calories per day that’s 225 calories in 24 hours. It takes the same 225 calories for digestion whether you eat 1,500 calories per day in celery or in bread. The difference is that you would have to eat 250 stalks of celery per day to eat 1,500 calories as opposed to about 15 slices of bread. Here’s how celery can help people lose weight. It tastes good, it takes time to chew, it’s filling and it’s low in calories.

  21. Interesting issue, as by law these days all retailers of vehicles, new or used, are responsible for faults for 6 months. This is from the 'Honest John' website The consumer returns the goods in the first six months from the date of sale and requests a repair or replacement or a partial refund. In that case, the consumer does not have to prove the goods were faulty at the time of sale. It is assumed that they were. If the retailer does not agree, it is for the retailer to prove that the goods were satisfactory at the time of sale. This comes from Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002, derived from EU Directive 1999/44/EU which became Clauses 48A to 48F inclusive of the Sale of Goods act in April 2003
  22. About 6.00pm tonight, driving through the centre of PR. Your car is identical to mine last year, before I changed the wings to green!
  23. Is there a theory that modern petrol does not last very well? Perhaps try some fresh fuel.
