  1. White spirit might remove waxy/oil coatings but always leaves an oil film. In my experience meths is very good at removing oil films and providing a good clean surface to paint/stick things to.
  2. Well it is friday 😬 here Regards, Giles
  3. Do you have the angled or straight gearstick? Can you shorten your gearstick? Alternatively remove left index finger, problem solved!.... Well that problem anyway. 😬 Regards, Giles
  4. I'm sure one of the other guy's will have a better explanation, but in simple terms you should use a relay when you don't want the switch carrying the high current in the circuit. Eg. Fuel pumps, starters, headlights. You don't have to use a relay in all cases but it is a safer method and avoids the use of "powerstation" sized switches. With a relay, you can switch high current load devices with tiny toggle switches as the relay takes the high current out of the switch circuit. Your starcom and LEDs only draw a small current therefore a small, low current rated, switch is fine. Basically check the current draw and use an appropriate switch and/or relay as appropriate. 5. Ref. Removing the latched spade, I use a watchmakers/micro flat blade screwdriver. However, I have used sewing machine needles in the past (although they can break if not careful, and then you have to remove the broken bit before you can release the spade 😔 😬) Regards, Giles
  6. Doh! Think I may have sent the blatmail to one of the other posters - apologies. Rich, hopefully you now have mail Regards, Giles
  7. And there was I thinking you were going to disappoint us with only losing an alternator bolt 😬 Glad you and Stu are both ok and the damage looks 'minimal' Regards, Giles
  8. Hi Geoff , I'm not on the trackday but am planning to come across for the craic. Happy to help whilst the rest of the guys get sorted . Regards, Giles
  9. Paul, Assuming your idle is 900, if you just raise the revs a bit to e.g. 1200 and keep it there, does that bring the temp down? Regards, Giles
  10. I'm sure you're right Jason - ridiculous 1st gear as well with no affordable aftermarket gearset options either.
  11. The Ford MT75 box (sierra dohc/cosworth) is that pattern and the Mitchell Cotts version would allow for any bellhousing. I believe that's Westfield as well... Have we missed something 😬 The MX5 would be the logical choice. They do a 5 and a 6 speed box as well. http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u42/mx5racing/gbox003.jpg
  12. Hi Dany , If they're the ones I'm thinking of, they are carbon fibre with glass fibre backing. I believe the chap sells them on behalf of someone who knocks them out in their spare time. If they're the ones that a local member bought they were not great and were returned. That said, they may have improved the quality since then.
  13. One more question on the fan - is it running the right way? Only reason I say this is I managed to wire mine up the wrong way when hurriedly wiring a new fan in . The car ran fine when moving but overheated very quickly when in traffic/stationary as the fan was trying to cool the rad with hot air! Regards, Giles
  14. Blacktop or Silvertop? Has this only just started happening? Is the fan cutting in? Regards, Giles
  15. Hopefully it is not related but Google reveals some very strange goings on re. VW tdi engines and cutting out, many of them linked back to injector issues.
  16. Hi RRS , Sudden cut outs on these engines are often due to injector failure as the engine effectively fails safe. Safe for the car that is, not you on the motorway! Hopefully it's something trivial (and less expensive!). Good luck and please let us know what the outcome is. Regards, Giles
  17. 10x!! *eek*, what age is the car? Assuming it's kit built and pre August 97, it should be around 3% CO and 250 Hydrocarbons I think. Good luck and let us know how you got on Giles
  18. Hi Rampmonkey , What were the figures? As a starting point make sure the carbs are balanced i.e drawing the same amount of air through them. Easiest done with the weber carb balancer or equaivalent. Assuming the test is being done at idle I would try and do it on the idle adjustment screws. Turn all 4 a 1/4 turn clockwise to reduce the fuel. You may be able to reduce them by a 1/2 turn. When they spit back you've gone too far. It will idle roughly but once you're through the test just wind them back out. Obviously you need to find an MOT place that will let you play with the carbs Regards, Giles Edited by - Klunk on 20 Apr 2013 18:03:49

    Quaife gearbox

I have a Quaife sc/cr clubman 5sp Type 9 gearbox for sale. I bought this unused following a refresh by Phil at Road and Race Transmissions. It has not been used since and I am now selling due to a change of plans. I was informed the ratios are as follows: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 2.040 1.540 1.210 1:1 0.870 The box has the long input shaft and upgraded steel baulk rings. £900 + delivery etc Regards, Giles
  23. Hi Paul , If you can, go for a 1.5-2bar sender - it gives that little bit more of a safety zone. I believe you can also get an adjustable one to set it where you want it. If you can't get one in the right thread, get an adapter an use 1/8NPT sender. HTH Regards, Giles Edited by - Klunk on 21 Mar 2013 11:05:11
