    K Build

Hello All After a bit of fortuitous timing in the For Sale section I now have in my possession the bulk of what I need to build a rather nice 1.6 (I know I should have bought an early Superlight!!!). I intend this thread being a way to display my ineptitude, frustrations and log what happens in the coming months (or likely years). Recent purchase is a set of TF160 Pistons all nicely sitting on 1.6 Rods I've had a 1.6 lying around in many plastic bags nicely labelled up since ...2008 !! Everything is tagged/bagged/marked as to position it came out of. Head is still fully assembled and I am considering a Dremel + Tungsten Carbide assault ! Nothing has had rulers or verniers over it yet (i.e. Big End sizings, Liner Heights etc.) but it was from a very low mileage Rover 200 Auto. I have a 1.4K SS in the car which may donate it's Cams and followers (not yet ascertained if this is possible, practical or sensible?). However straight Cylinder head drop is not an option. I would like to target a nice round 160-170bhp (which may be possible off standard induction?) With a view to adding Throttle Bodies over time and mating to an R&RT fettled six speed (as the Race teams go Sadev). I'll get into the technicalities of measuring and prepping liners, big end bearings, balancing, porting, ECU's, Induction system, Head gaskets, Oil Ladders, Vernier Pulleys, block grinding etc. etc. over time....but what would you do ? Hints, tips, pitfalls and abuse gratefully accepted 😬

    Sprint tyres

Interesting. Only time I've run without any screen was at Avon Raceway hunkered down out of the airstream having removed the Airbrake. I nearly got to stage of running without a silencer too My interpretation of our regs in conjunction with MSA Blue book is that we are (nearly) all running Road Legal classes (not "Race Cars") therefore car should be run in silhouette as sold/available, therefore with Aero, Brooklands or Windscreen....oh and at least two mirrors, seats etc. in MOT legal form. I'd have destroyed many an expensive windscreen coming off track so glad we allow Aero unlike say BARC classes. I would not be comfortable ever having an open path directly in front of my throat. Depends how tall you are I suppose ?

Andrew, worth putting a wanted advert up for set of A539's anyway. You'll find class one (assuming 5 speed) a hoot Notice you mentioned removing the windscreen. You do have to run some form of Aeroscreen instead.
  11. Tom That's exactly what I plan to do mainly to bring chassis to ultimate 'Arch' Spec. Also makes any suspension choices easier to find. One issue I had with the earlier suspension mounts is the need slightly higher rating for fronts than a later car due to angle (i.e. 175 vs 150 lb) just to stop car diving too much under droop. Damn Speed bumps! Will also consider:- Watts Linkage Bosses, Front exhaust boss (footwell area), SLR cage mounts, Strengthened Diff Mount (if I ever want silly power), Lowered Floors, Steel straps for seat mounts off chassis rails rather than Alu floor, Black interior/engine bay powder coating....but which engine mounts ? 😬 David
  12. Consider what seats you have (or at least headrests if separate) if going to Aeroscreen with a Full Face Lid. Later Tilletts (rather than the Caterham Tillett) have the headrest offset back and there is a half depth headrest for S Type seats. Do not understimate how much a lid pushes your head forward relative to shoulder position
  13. Grr.. Alternator with lump out of casting (done PRE packaging) just arrived
  14. Currently on Odyssey PC680 (wanted cranking power on old K, and added chunky wire to starter) and that is fine 6 years on and is always on Optimate when in garage. Previous Red Top 20's failed due to other problems i.e. Alternator overcharging (football shaped battery !!!) and FIA switch/capacitor.
  15. Yep, QH units on Ebay or Wood Auto near me (who have a good cross reference list) coming in £83-£100.
  16. Caterham's listed EU3 unit (simple wiring mod?) GNU2478 or YLE101520 ?? 65amp
  17. Cheers Mankee Yes I would like to use smaller/lighter alternator not least as the A127 is a pig to get in and out and only a few mm clear of chassis rail. May even be room for a heat shield too? Just ordered a YLU101430 bracket off Ebay. I'd say ideal is keep the 4V engine pulley and possibly even transfer the guarded fan and pulley off the A127 onto a smaller lighter unit though most parts are easy/cheap from Rimmer's. My biggest mistake after first failure (5 months after I got the car) was not fitting a proper sliding tensioner (always been simple nut and bolt) and also I put up with previous owners bodge of two bolts off upper bracket (i.e. rear not floating properly). They ultimately failed making it almost impossible to remove the alternator itself. It took a Dremel, safety specs and over 20 cutting discs. Never again. Anyone got suitable Alternator part numbers ?
  18. Anyone successfully converted early 1.4 16v A127-55amp alternator arrangement to later K series variant? Mine is hanging off a now knackered bracket YLU10089 with poor tensioner. Caterham only list YLU101430 which looks like a good starting point given keeps alternator captive. Looking for all part numbers (I have looked at diagrams on Rimmer Bros' but for correct Alternator, bolts, tensioner/adjuster, pulley et al. Then it's Scrapper and Ebay time. Early alternator solid but huge and previous owner and my bodges must finally be made good Want something reliable to take car on a serious tour. Ta, David
  19. Dropped a few old KN minators off at Kimberworth not long since Tom. If not been scrapped yet one was scuffed but serviceable. The other was remodelled by the kerb ☹️ ET23 6x13
  20. Vicfibretech £60 delivered and amenable to any custom colour for a little extra so likely my source for rear wings and nosecone at rebuild. Sure he'll do white as a standard given the Boat work I bought black, very good finish, dimensionally identical with the lip like Caterham ones. White underside but that may get painted with black Isoflex to protect them.
