  1. CC is selling several rear brake items: A "Race" caliper, here And a vented disc, here Clearly there is weight savings but is there any increase in braking performance compared to the standard 'uprated' brakes? Iow, are they worth the dough? 2ndly, I'm changing pads. Topic has been covered to death but just the same I'm soliciting opinions on the ultimate performance pads for track use. I've got the AP 'Caterham' badged 4 pot calipers up front and the uprated calipers at the rear. I've had some issues w/ the rears locking and I'd love to see that go w/out installing a balancing valve (even though I probably should). The car sees very little duty on the road so no reason to compromise. Cheers! ------- Chris A verbis ad cursus
  2. How will you handle the seat harnesses? Photo indicates that you'll lay them over the top, perhaps after trimming the seat edge. Edit: Can it be easily cut? ------- Chris A verbis ad cursus Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 20 Oct 2009 02:38:37
  3. A single plenum chamber? I haven't ever seen the R400 so I don't know what Caterham do to get 210 hp but in the early days of Duratec that meant TBs & cams. Theoretically (if nothing inside is broken / bent) you should be able to transfer all the good bits (intake system, cams, sump, lightweight clutch / flywheel if it has them, etc.) to a donor and away you go. I did this when I popped an oil ring - a low mileage junkyar... er, reclaiming yard engine cost me $750. I moved all of the good parts from the smoker to the new. It fired up 1st try, no remapping required, and runs essentially identically to the original (knock wood). You may want to switch to an 80 deg. C thermostat while you're at it. 😬 Or, go see Ammo for even more fun ------- Chris A verbis ad cursus
  4. Caterham posts the build manual here An older one is here ------- Chris A verbis ad cursus Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 24 Jan 2009 17:54:47
  5. There have been several recantings on this board of right proper blow-ups of propshaft U joints which *possibly* are a result of shock loading from sequentials. Anecdotal evidence perhaps but for sure the results are not pretty. I'll be making mine the H pattern variety. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  6. I recently re-mounted a set of ACB10s on wheels after about 2 years sitting in the dark in a shed attached to my garage. I'd put them in opaque garden bags. The tires are somewhere around 3 - 4 years old. They don't seem to have suffered at all in terms of grip, or in any other way for that matter. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  7. A reasonable article on the topic can be found here ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  8. I was just going to ask that question. Thanks ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  9. I was pondering this over a smoke in the garage Sunday night. Do it in Titaniium. A bitch to weld but no corrosion, no fatigue, light & ductile. I reckon one wouldn't cost much more than a million or so ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  10. Ammo, what's the diameter of the primaries and Rob's intake? May I have one? 😬 ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  11. Tom in NorCal documented his build pretty well. It's all posted here It's a 2 liter in a S3 chassis. Cheers ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  12. Thanks for that Paul. I'll pass the info about the strengthening along to Jon. As long as he's got to do some work he might as well do it all. He's had nothing but trouble this year. W/ CC now offering a high HP engine w/ a sequential option, I wonder if they've thought about this mode of failure. After all, the new R500 is little different than Jon's 250 +/- hp. Add some slicks and one would be in the same arena. Edit: A Norcal shop shows a hoop on their website and I believe they installed them in their race cars. I don't think they were ever, um, tested however. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 11 Jun 2008 01:44:44
  13. Ha! 😬 No, it's the mount for the remote shock thingies. Suffered a bit it did. All apologies about the login thing - I don't get it and I'll ask Magnus why. Thanks for the help Mav! Roger: Jon said it was new, replaced prior to the start of the year. It had only done only 4 or 5 track events, perhaps a grand total of 100 minutes. Jon usually only hops on track long enough to get a good time - 3 or 4 laps per session most, sometimes less. This seems shock-load related & Jon has mentioned to me that he still isn't perfect w/ the sequential. Magnus theory that the drivetrain is essentially a direct connection between engine and tires seems plausible. How are sequentials implemented in your neck of the woods? Edit: Roger, you and Barbara have fun over there in France. We sorely wish we would have been able to join you. Work and events precluded that - bah. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 10 Jun 2008 16:09:31
  14. I don't think registration is required. Drill down to the 'more replies below current depth' and you'll see on the list 'Well, as promised see...' posted by me. Then click on the attachments listed below the posting. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  15. Anybody interested in a fairly clear example of what happens when the front U-joint in the driveshaft fails at speed is welcomed to have a look here Opinions, especially from those who run or have experience w/ Quaife sequentials, are gladly welcomed, either here or there. Thanks! ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  16. I need this too. Thanks Brent! ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  17. We can get 100 and 110 at the tracks I frequent (edit: right out of the pump), and there's a normal gasoline station that sells 100 not too far away in Pasadena. All of it is pretty dear, at least relative to 'normal' gasoline, and relative to the price you all are paying now. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 19 May 2008 15:54:40
  18. Ammo, I think we discussed this at build time but Alaskossie's question reminds me that I'll be using 100 (or higher) octane fuel in the 2.1. That's by our system of measurement. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  19. Indeed, and informative r.e. which way to go forward. Yes we do. We can't help it (we're that way as a result of our Anglo Saxon heritage). Don't you? ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  20. Your own engine? Ahem. 😬 YHM. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  21. I've been using them like ACB10s, w/ the numbers facing right at the rear and left at the front. Don't know how much this matters to be honest. Torque wrench advice is spot on imo. For sure you'll notice a little bit of difference in grip between the 500s and slicks. That much I do know about 😬 ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  22. Joachim didn't tell me that when I got mine. I'll have to give that a look. Who knew? I've attached mine w/ velcro all around. The tape looks pretty stupid when the doors aren't on the car but they won't budge otherwise. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  23. I'd drop SBD an email to see if there is enough clearance between the bonnet and the spud on the top. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  24. Found it today. Ford PN D4ZZ 7600 A - it could be different in the U.K. Parts counter man said they put them in Mustangs. Thanks Ammo! ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam
  25. Thanks to all for the help. Ammo, YHM. Edit: Next question: Does anyone know the part number for the pilot bearing for the input shaft at the rear of the crankshaft? Or alternately, where one can be sourced? I've measured it to be 15mm ID x 22mm OD. ------- Chris Ad majorem 7 gloriam Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 1 Feb 2008 14:22:57 Edited by - moosetestbestanden on 1 Feb 2008 14:23:26
