7Up
Spoke with CC this morning, they advised the 6 speed gearbox is no longer availible. All new cars will be 5 speed.
Wrightpayne
It was mooted in another thread recently. Does that mean 2nd hand values will be going up!! ;-)Ian
ScottR400D
Interesting policy. I can see how the 6 speed, arguably, doesn’t add much on road but having driven both 5 and 6 on track, it’s much better then, IMO. Is this a sign that higher power 7s and track use are becoming less popular?
BrettJ
Yes this is true, as I'm unable to order a 6 speed box. So if anyone has one and wants exchange it for a 5 speed with some cash please let me know.
rj
Ian,There's no extra 6-speed box in my garage to collect.

sjl1
When i heard this in Jan the reason given was simply cost, CC can only order in small numbers, the costs are high and with CC’s margin, the cost to the customer was simply too high
sjl1
On the plus side, will this encourage firms like Quaife to develop mazda 5 speed close ratio gear kits? This would be an ideal solution, better than the CC 6 speed IMHO
Mark w
CC will still offer a 6 Speed , its made by Sadev
Paul Mason
I was looking at boxes (not that I have the money to buy one) and Elite sequentials weren't daft money (less than CC charged for the h pattern 6). Plus they are very light - has anyone ever put one of those in a 7?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 2, 2019 Member Share Posted May 2, 2019 On the plus side, will this encourage firms like Quaife to develop mazda 5 speed close ratio gear kits? I don't know one Mazda box from another but is this relevant? Quaife Mazda MX5 (Miata) 5 Speed Synchro Close Ratio Gear Kit Jonathan
sjl1
The mazda box caterham use doesnt have a gear kit yet, apparently there is talk that Quaife may introduce one?

Paul Mason
Be interested to know what that's like RJ as did strike me a decent value in comparison to other options and v. Light by the long is of things. Have you gone 5 or 6 speed?
rj
6 speed. It's actually ex-Simon Rogers; it was in his R400 and used for sprints. From what I've head the loss in the Elite is higher, it does not change as well and it's noisier than the Sadav. But at the time I bought it it seemed a good idea. I've had it for a few years.
rj
Problem is that even if I offered you a salary of 100% of the revenue you'd still struggle to feed yourself.
Simon.Rogers
I have driven a couple of Sadev cars and will do again next week in another 620 and I used the Elite IL 200 for a full 7 years of track and road work. The Elite was probably a little quieter than the Sadev but difficult to measure and is also subjective and impaired by different engines. The Elite change is so significantly lighter to change gear than the Sadev you almost think there is something wrong with it. I had paddles with the Elite from day one but retained the stick as it was the first pneumatic paddle shift install ever with that box and car combination. You can change gear with a light pull with 2 fingers. That's not to knock the Sadev. as its specs are much stronger than the Elite. The cost is double also. I sell the Elite box and have a design for the gearbox mount that will link up with the existing Caterham mount.
7 wonders of the world
JKthat kit is for the MK 1 MX-5 box - which is a good box, CC use the MK 3 / 3.5 / 4 box Full alloy type 9 with the correct internals is still a decent pice of kit

MADMALC
Just for clarity the mx5 mk4 gearbox is not the one used by caterham, it is from the mk3 range.
7 wonders of the world
The box is the same one in 5 speed format from the Duratec powered MX-5, the sport models having a 6 speeder - which CC might look at...CC simply change the bellhousing to allow for a vertical engine install as the MX-5 engine has a 10 degree cant. Not sure what box is used on the back of the 1.5 engine in the latest modelthuogh it feels the same when I droven them. mic
If only it was just a bellhousing change, its a new gearbox casting.
