True Mark except people don't buy Caterhams because they need them, only that they want them and that insulates them to a degree Now if you are lucky enough to own a 4x4 then there is REAL pain Pull up to a dealership in one and the salesmen will run for cover.   6. An ATB in any axle should be as quiet as an open diff, if it's not then something is wrong. Check other driveline components like Hardy Spicer's before jumping to any conclusions, if they feel knotchy, change em. Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.

  10. I think another issue with BEC's in general, is over revving on the downchange. The engine gives little in the way of engine braking to warn the driver of what they are doing. As time has passed I've become very careful about this and try to drive in a more methodical way. Lets not forget though, a whole engine is less than £800 Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.
  11. When my gearbox broke at Silverstone (it always was a lemon) the scavenge pumps got thoroughly buggered as did the main oil pump. When I rebuilt it all I fitted a new main oil pump and had new stages and rotors fitted to the D/S scavenge pump by Neil at Pace. I also have a mega magnet on the end of my DS tank dipstick which sits permanently in the tank. This picks out a lot of the little bits of metal and stops them getting to the oil pump.   12. Get an old diff out of a Sierra and have the slip unit put in it. Reading on hear the ammount of people who complain about this it's clear that either all the re-manufactured diffs are crap or whoever is building them hasn't a clue. Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.
  13. What bit do you need photo's of? These Axles couldn't really be more simple Pulling the shafts is dead easy, with a slide hammer if the shaft is a bit sticky. Just undo the 4 bolts on the end and out it all comes. Dont just whack out the old studs, support the rear of the shaft with a big socket/tube/vice or similar. The new ones can be hammered in with the front face supported in the same way. Don't forget to keep an eye on the wheel nut tightness until they settle down. On mine I used long studs so I could fit wheel spacers. I did have to cut down the long studs so I could use the non open ended wheel nuts. Do this before you fit them! While you have the shafts out I seriously recommend getting them trued. They should be set up in a lathe (4 jaw at the splines) and run on the wheel bearing at the other. The surface can then be faced. If this hasn't been done already I'd be amazed after 30 years if they are not a bit bent.   15. My spare came from Barry at 'The Fireblade Shop' http://www.firebladeshop.co.uk/ He supplied all the (brand new) engines to James Whiting for the cars that had them like mine.   16. First registered 23.03.06, 1.3 Manual in Moondust silver with Ebony leather interior. ABS, Air Con, Electric Windows, Central Locking, Heated front windscreen etc Total mileage just 5841 and in perfect condition with no dents dings or scrapes.   17. R4 is good for me too, have always used fully synth and not just castrol, have uses Putolene and Silkolene too. R4 is what it says on the chassis tag dosen't it? Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.

  19. You don't need to undo the pinion nut to install a LSD unit into this Diff. I did a write up about this when I installed a TranX into my last car.   20. I'd recommend Coltec Racing engines (formerly Holbay) in Grundisburgh (Ipswich) We had a mild Crossflow head fettled plus boring grinding etc, it came in less than predicted cost and made good horsepower on the rollers. Thumbs up from us Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.
  21. The bearing will have rusted into the Axle casing, try the slide hammer when you get it with a little heat. Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.
  22. Hmm I think that the re-manufactured units of today are no where near as good as the Ford OE of the 80's and 90's and thats why so many owners complain of noisy Diffs. It may also be that the people building them aren't nearly as good as they could/should be. The stated backlash tolerance at 3 points is 0,05mm in the Ford manual (have one here) with backlash 0,10-0,17mm. That sounds pretty exact to me. I have built one of these myself and measured no more than the above tollerance on a Diff that would have been built by Ford then re-built by me. This diff wat totally quiet before and after.   23. When I installed an LSD in my sierra open diff I used flat bar. You really really don't need the special tool. For info though, the Ford part number of 'diff bearing adj wrench' which i'd guess to be the right one is 15 071 Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.
