  1. Jonathan the charger is a rock bottom basic Halfords unit of at least 15 years vintage, so i have ordered jump starter. Shall let you know once I have got her to start
  2. Hi Jonathan, Its of the type used on ride on mowers, three years/ 5000 miles old. Acid levels all above the plates, and in spite of sitting just above the gear box seldom requires topping up. I am away from home so cannot recall make of charger but it must be some 15 yrs old, though seldom used. All leads tight and clean, no oxidation visible. Have not had a chance to jump start it. I am curious as to why given the voltage readings the power dropped off after only five quick turns, one thing I forgot to mention is that between attempts to start it the ignition light had a slight flicker.
  3. My X/F usually requires three attempts on the starter button to get it fired up. Of late the number of attempts has increased and today it refused to fire with the battery unable to turn her over after just five attempts. The battery had been on charge over night and showed 14.3 volts before starting and 12.7v after proving too weak to turn over. Is it a duff battery or the charger?
  4. Try putting the old coil back on, I was once supplied with a brand new but dud one, which cause symptoms similar to those described. The car would grind to halt, then after half an hour start on the button.
  5. Did you drill a small hole in the fuel cap to prevent a vacuum forming in the tank as the fuel reduces?
  6. Just over Kingston Bridge heading South in heavy traffic around 17.10 today
  7. Classic Silcone Hoses Excellent service and products, mine came in black but I think they will do colours. NB both hoses were over length, so some trimming may be required
  8. Charlie, Perhaps a little far away(?) but try Manor Garage in West Linton, they do a lot of classic and race car prep
  9. Try Paul Hunt at Powertrack Ltd. He supplied me with a brand new master cylinder at very reasonable price ex stock for my 96 Super Sprint. He also does refurb kits
  10. Valid thought Elie, but my comments are based upon empirical experience, I know that on a favorite uphill stretch of road, that if I leave the village at Ymph and floor it in 3rd, I will be hitting Zmph in 4th when I pass a certain marker, now it does not reach Z.
  11. My bog std 1700 Super Sprint did not like being driven at low speed and would not sit comfortably at 30mph in 4th gear, jerking and seemingly permanently on the edge of a stall. Having refreshed the head and balanced the 40's she now runs beautifully at low speed and will happily pootle at 30 mph through town without complaint, this new behaviour has however come at the expense of top end acceleration above 5000rpm which is definitely slower. What have I done wrong?
  12. I did on my 96 S3, they fit perfectly, but only a few the bolt holes aligned so I had much drilling to do. Remember you also have to make new holes in the rubber jointing strip!
  13. Stridey, my 96 X/F runs at the same temp, as to the heater I am assuming you have the large flat rectangular heater matrix, in which case the fan simply recirculates the air in the cockpit, there being no fresh air intake. There should be a push /pull heater knob under the dash to the right of the steering column, this operates (on/off) the flow valve on your heater water feed.
  14. X/F: In the radiator or in the pressure cap tower?
  15. I have always been taught and never questioned the mantra that tappets must only be adjusted when the engine is warm, why? Can they be "gapped" when cold, if so what allowance should be made for the temperature difference?
  16. An air lock causing a hot spot in the head? My X/F is very sensitive to airflow, on the move the temp stays around 80c, as soon as I stop even just waiting for the traffic lights, the temp will climb. I have fitted a manual over ride to the fan switch which helps.
  17. Thanks all, I found one at Car Builder Solutions, it is nylon with a small brass "valve" , looks robust so shall fit it tonight.
  18. I saw a picture on the forum of a small bleed valve inserted in a heater hose, anybody know where i can obtain one of these? Thanks
  19. Thanks All, I think Martyn has a strong point in that my technique may not be up to scratch and I have not been ensuring the bleed grommet has not allowed external air to be sucked in. By the way i am using DOT 4 and Mintex 1144 pads, road use only, is this a potential fade problem?
  20. I have just replaced the front calipers and the rear cylinders on my live axle X/F, a new master cylinder having been fitted last year. In refilling the system I have thus far bled more than 600ml of fluid and am still getting some small air bubbles appearing. The pedal has gone from no resistance to rock solid, but I cannot get rid of a soft half inch of initial travel. Am I doing something wrong/ have another problem, or is this as good as it going to get? Cannot road test it yet as the engine is still in bits.
  21. Jonathan: "both parts"? I have a '96 S3 and the standard boot floor is a single piece ply. I have a double floor with a small spares box built into the base with a separate cover on top. (see Low Flying article of 3-4 years ago). Happy to copy an out line on to a some wall paper if you wish.
  22. The mounts are fine, just 20K miles on the clock, the engine is rock solid. I took the car to a chap who builds racing exhausts for modern and vintage cars and he thought the problem may lie with a misalignment of one of the primaries, two which leak at their union with the collector.
  23. Mankee, thanks for the info. Terryfield, this has been going on for years, it is a 4:1 system, and always no. 2/3 that blows. I have had the surface trued, twice, checked the head, tried Burton, etc. etc gaskets, double and single, tried FF racing gaskets, made up copper ones of varying thickness, tried fitting the primaries first, then the collector all gto no avail, so this time I shall try a front bracket.
  24. ! have 1996 S3 X/F and tiring of the unceasing blowing of the middle primary exhaust gasket have decided to experiment with a front bracket to support the 4:1 system. How far from the rear bracket bolt hole is the hidden front one?
  25. I have twin pot brakes (one piston each side) on my 1996 X/F Super sprint, will someone please tell what the thickness of a new pad is, i.e. from wearing surface to back plate surface that touches the piston. Also what is the maximum safe extent the pistons can protrude from the calipers under braking. Thanks
