  1. Have fitted the Think Auto mechanical OP guage and sender (hurrah - I now have confirmation of oil pressure after going thru 3 leccy senders). The extra switch is set for 35 psi (I think). Before I wire it up, I checked, and it appears it will be just about on or thereabouts at hot idle. I can't see a way of adjusting it down a bit. Do people live with this, not both wiring it up, or is 35 psi at idle on the low side (I have an apollo tank)? Thanks AB
  2. What sort of price is a Tran-X LSD? The only price I can see is on the Demon Tweeks site, which I'm guessing is on the high side. Thanks AB
  3. Interested. alan.bowler [at] bnpparibas.com Thanks AB
  4. And you've already got a Tillet, which is about the same as a vintage tractor seat. The hood is tractor-like too. You'll need to point the exhaust upwards a bit as well. AB
  5. IMHO, for a semi-track car, go for a 6 speed supersport. An ex racer (Roadsports A?) would be a good choice, plus you get an LSD, if you aren't too bothered about cosmetic appearance. SS + verniers made a big difference to my car, but I do tend to keep the revs up. 6 speed probably helps resale value, plus is expensive to add later. AB
  6. A friend of a friend (ahem) over filled a bit on a track day. Got black flagged for ALOT (cough) of smoke coming out of the exhaust on left handers ( *smokin* ) Drained a bit through the appollo, and no harm done (he hopes). Better to drain it off, thru the filter, as suggested. AB
  7. So that'll be the annual pilgrmmage to Brands, four years running, four different sevens then Martin. Is this car "The One"? I really think you should go in the red group, and stay well clear of the blues. AB
  8. Useful info from Myles on Oil changes here: clicky Don't know too much about sealed academy engines. Are they maintained by Caterham or do they sub-contract it out? AB
  9. Mark - see other thread - will take helmet and stands pls. Will be at Brands. Thanks AB
  10. Mark, First Dibs on the helmet and axle stands please. Will be at Brands on Weds, so can see if the helmet fits my big head then. AB
  11. Mine came out that way. I got the manifold off beforehand by undoing the engine mount and jacking up the engine a couple of inches (thanks to Myles for that top tip). AB
  12. You could measure the valve opening/lift with the standard pulleys to see how far away it is from optimum. If its not that far out (I guess you'd have to check with someone like Oily for that) then maybe its something else thats wrong. The verniers can give you a very lumpy idle - maybe not something you'd be happy with either. I quite like it - part of the "I'm a proper racing driver in my racing car" illusion. Maybe you're just more in tune with your engine than most! Heavy use of the right foot seems to resolve most of the noises/rattles/misfires I've had. Might be a good idea to try someone elses supersport to see if its better. AB
  13. ...it's pretty easy to put the standard pulleys back on afterwards, if you want to sell the car back to CC at a later date (and always a strong market for used verniers). Can't really comment re: Caterham warranty though. I guess they wouldn't be impressed if you fitted them without tightening properly, caused damage, and wanted a new engine from them. As their function is to make the timing "correct", they do sound like a good idea for your issues though. AB
  14. What a downer - you'd already planned the 1.8SS conversion, the team was almost assembled, the technical info was lined up, and now you'll have to stick with the 1.4. Try unscrewing something else and see if that blows it up. These K series engines are bomb proof. AB
  15. I think you'll struggle to stay reliably under 95db static. My '01 1.6K was up to 100dB with the standard short primary + cat exhaust. I don't know if 1.8 VVCs are noiser - I would assume so. With long pimaries and a brand new big caterham silencer, it measured 94dB. This will no doubt rise, and I'll have to look into making it repackable to do 98dB track days. Why do you need it THAT quiet? No doubt someone with a powerspeed/techcraft will have other (lower) dB figures. AB
  16. "At higher revs there is a slight screeching sound when accelerating" Tyres 😬 My bet on the other noises are also fuel pump/alternator belt. 5K miles in 6 years - it just needs driving!A trip through France will definitely help. If you are lucky, you'll lose the hood somewhere en-route. AB
  17. Not my experience of this upgrade - I was slightly worried that the SS cams would be good for high revs, but terrible lower down, but that wasn't the case. I put verniers on too. As others have said, double check everything is connected. Clutching at straws, but maybe try an ECU reset. Maybe the cambelt is one tooth out. As CC fitted it, I'd get them to look at it before you spend too much time on it. Also double check the ECU plug connector is on really tight. Mine worked its way loose, and caused a few odd problems. You will be 😬 again when its sorted! AB
  18. What about the rise height? Has it been flat-floured?
  19. Brunel, There are small (6mm) vent holes on either side of the banner. It breathes/vents through these. Normally this is fine, but a combination of overfilling/enthusiastic track driving on stickyish tyres, or an over enthusiastic conditioner/trickle charger can cause some acid to come out. I think I overfilled mine a bit, and leaked some in the engine bay during a track day. As far as I know, the race cars (plus some others?) have a pipe connected to the hole so that any acid hits the ground and not the engine bay/paintwork. Now I do too AB Edited by - Alan Bowler on 21 Aug 2007 20:15:41
  20. Just done this. Got some tubing from ebay which fitted just right. Cost pence. I used outer diameter 6mm. AB
  21. First dibs on the wings please - will blatmail later Thx AB
  22. Mine started creaking a few months ago. I only noticed it when I was adjusting pedal heights (engine off). My normal paranoia set in, checked the cable, tried to lubricate it etc. etc. and bought a new cable from CC in readiness for imminent failure. Read up on CRB failure and how I'd need to take the engine out to fix 😳 Many miles and two track days later, the pedal still creaks. New cable is still in its bag in the boot. AB
  23. 😳 ☹️ Sorry to see this.
