O.G.
I have managed to crack my SV heated windscreen.Has anybody any advice on sourcing a replacement glass and possibly a seal? The job look relatively straight forward but are there are any tricks to it?O.G. Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 4, 2018 Member Share Posted August 4, 2018 Definitely possible to DIY: there are some useful hints in the archives. IIRC the only recent problem was with a seal that turned out to be the wrong thickness. And some sources: presumably you want a heated replacement?Jonathan
SM25T
Where are you based ? Sevens & Classics at Brands Hatch can supply and fit new heated glass at very reasonable prices.
Wrightpayne
There is a CSR glass on ebay at the moment - in Preston.I understand SV’s and CSR’s are effectively the same size cars but would be prudent to check dimensions with the seller.Ian

pilotmonkey
Yes it's the heated screen, car is based N. Herts, so would be an hour or so. Will give them a call and see. Now what to do with the wiring, fit bullet connectors?
O.G.
Thanks Guy's.I'm awaiting a reply from National Windscreens for either them to supply a glass and seal or do the job.I understand the wiring will includes fitting Bullet Connectors.Salvaging and gluing the mirror might be interesting.O.G. Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 6, 2018 Member Share Posted August 6, 2018 Now what to do with the wiring, fit bullet connectors?"Best way to connect screen wiring for removal" but of course it depends on how often it's going off and on.Jonathan
R300 FNL
I’ve had two cracked windscreens in just over a year on my SV. I went through Adrian Flux insurance. Paid the £80 excess and they came out and replaced the full windscreen, frame, seal and refitted spade connectors. I now have two old windscreens that I was thinking about having tempered glass fitted for £30 as spares.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 7, 2018 Member Share Posted August 7, 2018 I'd encourage everyone to use laminated glass in windscreens, and even more so if you don't have additional protection for your eyes.Jonathan
O.G.
I finally went through the insurance but unfortunately did not have a good experience. Two and a half weeks. Numerous chasing calls. Most of the office staff did not understand anything about car windscreens let alone the specifics of Caterhams. When I finally got the name and number of someone who did know something I still had to chase otherwise it would not have been ready for this Bank Holiday. The final straw was the person who came could not have done the wiring connectors. We fitted it ourselves.Anybody else had similar experiences?O.G. PeterM
Going through same experience on my 160 - 2 weeks and counting!Naively thought insurers windscreen contractors would order an assembly from CC, but no, took screen back to their Bristol HQ and tried fitting new glass to old frame/old rubber; they botched it and frame was damaged in transit. Local branch now expecting delivery of an glass/frame assembly from CC next week. I took the knee plates off myself so local Fitter could get at the pillar nuts and I will refit them. Can't fault the Fitter though, he knows his stuff on Caterhams and will be connecting/heat shrinking the 'rats tail' to existing wiring as the connectors to the loom under the dash do not fit through the hole/grommet. SM25T
Buy the screen and fit it myself. Glass excess waived. That way you know it is right .... and the seal to the scuttle won't be fitted upside down ... have seen a few cars with that.
Wrightpayne
I use two bits of mains electrical terminal strip to join the wires to the loom for ease of disconnection.Ian

elie boone
Use this connector https://www.tme.eu/gb/details/221-412/quick-splice/wago/ no hassle.
O.G.
Peter MIt seems to be which branch or fitter you are served (if that's the right term) by as to the level of expertise.Mine was a brand new assembly from CC.O.G.
