Drumster
Who are the best people to speak to about designing a bespoke cage for my 7? Just thinking about exploring the idea of having a structure that can be bolted onto the car using the existing roll bar (albeit amended) i.e a cage that is removable for road use. I guess it could simply be too expensive an option.....
rj
Hmmm I've been thinking of having a cage made which would have removable outer bars to make it easier to get in the car when not on track.
cskip
Would it be worth talking to Caged? It is a great idea, thought about that myself.
Wrightpayne
Aeroscreen I remember an article in low flying about Japanese sevens probably 3-4 years ago where one owner had done this. Looked very neat. If you need a picture I can go through my 14 year LF collection to find it!! Ian
Wrightpayne
Up for a challenge found it..... Sept 2008 page 18. I do wonder if I'm a bit sad that I remember so much trivia!! Ian
Klunk
I'm pretty sure Caged did a version of this for the Westfield but i can't find any pictures to verify this. There is no reason you can't do this other than the racing regs - most rally cages have an element of bolts except at the highest level (FIA). Your petty strut is a bolt on and, at the end of the day, a standard cage is bolted to the chassis! Regards, Giles
Drumster
Ok, thanks for your inputs. I'll give Caged a call in due course....
Area Representative z7 Posted September 3, 2012 Area Representative Share Posted September 3, 2012 Didn't Arch make the (FIA) rollbars in the past 🤔 z7
7 wonders of the world
AFAIK double diagonal FIA bars were Caged and single diagonal FIA were Arch versions
LesG
Wrightpayne; I'm impressed it only took you 39 minutes to search through 14 years' worth of LF!
Drumster
Just spoken to Caged and they weren'y really interested in anything other than selling me a new cage ☹️.
elie boone
At home i have an address of some guy's ho fabricate dragsters, they should be used to make one off's, i'll digg up the address tonight
Wrightpayne
I've scanned the picture now if you want it. One thing to bear in mind is the FIA bar is a bigger diameter tube than a cage so any apendages to the FIA bar probably should be in the same diameter tube to a) look right and b) ensure consistent / equal strength. Ianroden
The following websitehere gives all the details of the specification of the cage, in addition there are some adverts in the text for people who will design and manufacture bespoke cages... CaterBram
Chris, Did you managed to get details sorted for a cage, might be some mileage in a bulk buy ?
Drumster
Unfortunately not. The best people to do this would be Caged and they are only interested in selling me a new cage. Safety Device were interested but were quoting £1200-£1500! In short if you 'amend' the existing FIA bar then it loses its homologation. However, the MSA confirmed that for Road-Going classes at Sprints as a rollbar/cage is not mandatory they would quite happily accept a modifed FIA bar. I've just accepted that there's probably a good reason that what I'm thinking of hasn't been done before..... I guess if I had the time and money I could get a prototype made and go from there but I think it really only has a limited appeal. I have today bought an older style single-diagonal cage for a reasonable price and will go down the route that I tried to avoid....

michaelw
I got my SD cage modified by a local fabricator to look like the Caged one and am pleased with it although the curved bars were expensive but would be much cheaper if bought in bulk. Its obviously lost its homoligation but I only drive it on the road and at trackdays. He also made up a side impact bar for the passenger side as Caterham didnkt do one at the time (not sure whether they do now) and looks like the drivers one so he's done a good job. Michael. Drumster
Thanks for all your comments etc. I might re-visit this idea one day but for now I've purchased an old-style roadsport cage.
