  1. Ian Some cars have this jiggle valve removed. IIRC it's a small ball bearing. Not sure whether this is considered a retrograde step or not though I would imagine it's there to stop air being drawn back into the head from the top of the expansion tank. 4. 1. Apollo or DS 2. 6 speed 3. 4-2-1 exhaust preferably or external collector 4-1 (In my opinion adding a 4-2-1 made the most noticeable difference to the performance of my 1.6SS but I did change from the standard internal collector 4-1) 4. 6. My kids don't know what they want and SWMBO says she doesn't want anything so that means I can spend it all on the 7 surely Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here
  7. Ian Going back to your original problem. I had problems getting my j hose to stay fitted to the thermostat housing until I removed the O ring. This apparently is needed on the original Rover installation but not on the Caterham. Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here
  8. Ian My 1997 1.6K had it's head gasket replaced by Oily last winter but the failure on mine was where the elastomer seal had become detached and the coolant was leaking from the HG down the side of the block. Luckily the head didn't need skimming and the liner heights were OK. The engine was coming out anyway to change the clutch release bearing so I took the opportunity to change the clutch, HG, head dowels from plastic to steel, inspect the bottom end bearings, remove the sump foam, carry out Oily's sump gasket drain mod, fit a new front crank oil seal, new wider cambelt, verniers and a little fettling of the inlet manifold and throttle body. Also ended up fitting an Apollo. So every cloud has a silver lining *wink* Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here

  10. Brent I though Zetec clutches were considered to be a 'consumable' much like CRB's and HG's on K series' 😬 Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here

bobt I think you'll find that the ribs on the block behind the starter have to be ground away for the starter to fit just like on the original engine. Don't know how easy this is to do with the engine in the car though Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here Edited by - Bozz on 3 Dec 2006 09:12:27

  16. Bloggsy The 1998 spec car looks almost superlight spec. *thumbup* with most of the desirable upgrades already done. Would just need to get rid of the cr44py exhaust and there you have it. 😬 Was it factory or kit built? Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here Edited by - Bozz on 30 Nov 2006 16:36:03

    Engine upgrade

Martin Obviously you'll have to speak with Oily, but IIRC he 'prefers' to either work on the engine on the stand i.e. delivered to him without the car or whilst the engine is still in the car depending on the extent of the work. I think Jason at Hellier has similar preferences. Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here

    O/T Damp Garage

Brent Yes I suspect that the sheets are porous and am contemplating either replacing them or coating them. Problem is SWMBO can't bear for me to spend any money on the thing as she'd like to knock it down and have an extension to the house but without any garage *eek* Bozz McLaren Orange and Black 1.6SS 6 Speed here
