  1. I don't believe the brake light theory. My lights have also been burnt and I know my brake lights are rarely on. Could be the tail light bit though. I wonder if you could fit the bulb so that the tail light filament is further back. Not that I think that'd help much. I think it's just poor design/quality of parts.
  2. PS Why not simply drive around with all lights on including high beam and fogs. Seems to work for most other road users...
  3. I think the only problem with these is that each unit is only one "light", ie. it'd be dipped OR main. So if your std. light unit uses both in one lamp (a la the 7) then you're a bit stuffed. Might be OK with a twin headlight Integrale set up though. I was considering looking at these for the 7 as the std lights are crap (even with brighter bulbs), but messing around trying to squeeze two bulb units into the shell, plus the ballast resistor jobbie, put me off. That and the fact that they were nearer 800quid a pair a year or so ago.
  4. The Quaife box isn't far removed from the Caterham 6 spd in terms of weight I believe. Something like 32kgs. It costs iro 3k+VAT the last time I considered it. Dave's box isn't a transaxle AFAIA - the gearbox still sits behind the engine and the diff sits on its own in the rear mechanicals. I was ready to go for a Quaife unit when I heard of Dave's experiments and am no going to wait for that route to pan out. I think it'll weigh 20kgs and a will cost a similar amount to the Quaife offering. It's "only" 5 speeds, but it should be possible to match the ratios with my engine's output so 6 shouldn't really be necessary. Dave's has yet to go in a deDion car (I think). My car's a deDion, as is PCs and no doubt a few others who'd be interested. Roll on "early in the new year". If you haven't tried it there's not much wrong with the std. Caterham 6 spd. By the way Simon, we knew you were kidding about the Locost. You don't mention sequential boxes and then do that (not that I'm deriding Locosts either).
  5. Plenty of buses have LED lights now (rears). So they must be OK...
  6. If that's why you're not coming to the meet tonight then I reiterate my comment on that thread but am also quite relieved. 😬

    R500

Toying with the idea of selling it at the moment. Registered June 02. 7mths warranty remaining. 2780 miles or so (200 on track). Car 74. Porsche Arctic Silver. All latest engine mods (apollo, ecu fan, oil cooler etc) plus carbon air box fia bar and petty strut (body colour) flat floored and proper springs fire extinguisher Am open to sensible offers. Was intending keeping it until next summer, by which time I would have finished tidying up my other 7. Have now shelved these plans in favour of something even more ludicrous, hence possibly selling. Car is pretty damn quick and handles nicely now. Also sounds quite frightening (a good thing), but not so much that you would be barred from circuits...
  8. If you have carbon wings, just leave a panel bare. If not I'll shut up.
  9. And if you're insured through MSM you might be able to save the 50xs if you fit it yourself. I found the most awkward part getting the seal to the right length. Flattened OK but was a bugger to cut correctly. Windscreen wipers are the same. Why can't Caterham supply these bits the right length? You'd have thought after 40 years...
  10. Mark's correct, except I can also still remove my sidescreens. Mark at Ratrace has made up some little brackets for his that attache to the hinges, extend forwards and the mirrors fit in there. Also a neat solution. Note that your doors only open 90 degrees or so in this mode, but you get used to it.
  11. Anyone know where you can get carbon bonnets and scuttles from...I doubt they'd be much lighter, and should drunken herbert fall on it it could be upsetting, but there's an aesthetic angle I'm thinking of here...
  12. Assuming my assumption about VAT is correct (I've yet to see any engine parts manufacturer quote prices with VAT) I reckon that puts the total at 1200-1300 unfitted. This is still very good value for money for what is a quality piece of kit though, and still over 25% off the Caterham price. Tank positioning is also a good point to note as it's pretty much free depending on your engine bay layout. I have a more conventional tank sited where the passenger footwell extension used to be. As I didn't need the leg room, the "better" weight distribution was preferred. It *might* also have some positive affects with respect to warming the oil (pipe runs are longer though).
  13. I don't have a Caterham system but: 1) Yes 2) Depends how creamy it is and what was in the catch tank before. It might be. Do you have any nasties in the coolant header tank? Give the catch tank a really good clean out and a good drying and run it again. 3) Yes. 4) Not sure but sounds OK.
  14. Indeed. If you track your K series car regularly then a dry sump is a must. The Apollo does give some benefit on its own, but it simply isn't enough to protect your car once you start going quickly on track. I'm not 100% sure having been out of the loop for a little while, but I believe Pace's 840GBP (or whatever the shelf price is - and I assume this is +VAT) excludes a tank and any fittings/extras you might need/want. However, if fitting it yourself I'd be surprised if it cost much more than 1200 quid incl. taxes. Which is still a lot less than Caterham's system (the only advantage with which is that it has been proven in a few year's racing, where as the Pace system, as applied to the K, hasn't. Works though).
  15. Do you have one of those big bass boxes and the cable that glows in the dark too?
  16. Or if you want the really pricey DIY option you can buy some plastic coated mesh from Halfords. It's intended for MkIII Escorts but works well as a stone catcher. About 15 quid for enough to do 2 grilles. Takes about 5mins and half a dozen tie wraps to sort it.
  17. Cover Systems. Search for them on here and you'll get their number. 85 quid or so new. At least as good, possibly even better than the Covercraft jobs that Caterham sell at around 190GBP. They also come with a cable and lock and are properly fitted.
  18. Other people have experienced hassle with the fitment. It's only fibreglass so getting one to fit shouldn't be a problem though. I wonder if the changes were due to a different manufacturer or different tooling...
  19. 1) Yep. 2) The EU3 is your problem. Some people have made up their own looms, and I believe Emerald are looking into it (maybe already have). But until then you're stuffed (unless you make your own). Assuming you could get a programmable ECU you wouldn't have to do anything else immediately, but power output would depend on how good your head casting is. TB's make the car sound excellent though. Worth it just for that. 3) I'd only suggest fitting a Laminova if you do lots of track work and/or you see high oil temperatures. If you don't fit in this category it's probably safe to say it's added expense, weight and complication for little benefit. Nice bits of kit though and wouldn't hurt the engine if you wanted to fit one.
  20. The grille shapes do differ and people have come a cropper with that one before I think. Whether you can make one fit I don't know.
  21. Stig off Top Gear. The question has been answered!
  22. Does it lose a cm every time you use it. Or does it just drop this much once you've refilled? Does the level drop to around the seam mark of your header tank? These have been known to leak, often imperceptibly (other than the drop in level). I believe the rectangular tanks are worse than the new spherical ones. I also lost coolant without any steam being noticeable due to a cracked head...
