Hi Michael, I would have thought that this is covered in the construction and use regs that are complied with for road use, we are in road going classes. Having seen Adrians and Martin Sargeant's 215s under standard wings I think it would be a harsh scrutineer that would fail you. However, I will be on my 175 fronts at Goodwood and will have the spare pair with me should you need to fit them at any time. See you there.
  2. My Escort axle has an alloy nose around £300, Tran X LSD around £400, Burton CWP £250, casing mods at Arch, cost unknown. I've still got crappy drum brakes and standard half shafts which break if abused. Even at the figures quoted this looks like the ideal live axle solution to me, definately what I would do if I was starting again.
  3. No. All you need is your regular ignition switch to be clearly labelled how to switch it off.

You will need Kumhos 215 and 235 widths supplied by the very helpful; Mel Williams 13 Tawelan Pontargothi Carmarthen SA32 7NQ His phone number is in the book, delivery to your house is free
  5. If you are desperate you could mod your lighting circuit so that the sidelights could be off when driving in daylight, should save you 20W.
  6. Malcolm, I found that mine were tight using a new set of nuts and secondhand wheels. I measured the nut shank diameters and found they varied by a few thou but within an acceptatable range. I cleaned all the wheel recesses using a brush on a dremmel. I then layed out the wheels and retried the nuts in the recesses, by trial and error I then managed to find a nut that fitted each recess on the wheels. Some nuts were too tight in some holes. I have each wheel marked with which corner of the car it fits, and when the wheels are off the car I bag the nuts in 4 self sealing poly bags marked with which wheel they belong to. Hope that makes sense and helps. Cheers, Nigel.
  7. Use a "crows foot" open ended spanner with half inch square drive. Ensure that the spanner is at 90 degrees to the torque wrench to minimise errors in the torque setting. If you use the spanner in line with the centre line of the torque wrench you are increasing the effective length of the torque wrench.
  8. I don't really care but....Cambridge dictionary; verb 1 to cause a liquid to change to a gas, especially by heating: The high concentration of sugars forms a syrup when the sap evaporates. Plants keep cool during the summer by evaporating water from their leaves. 2 to disappear: Halfway through the film reality evaporates and we enter a world of pure fantasy. Looks like it changed to a gas and disappeared to me!
  9. We have a number of large lead acid batteries at work (rooms full), they are maintained by float charge and occasional discharging and boosting and they are not topped up with acid. Lots of info on google if you search for lead acid batteries, following is an extract. "Traction and semi traction batteries are generally supplied with removable vent caps so that they can be kept topped up with water. The action of charging the batteries causes gassing when a certain voltage is reached, usually somewhere around 2.35 to 2.4 volts per cell. The result is that water is depleted of its constituent parts by liberation of the Hydrogen gas plates. Hydrogen is of course much less dense that air and the electrolyte and consequently floats out of the batteries at the earliest opportunity."
  10. I leave batteries on Optimates permanently with no apparent ill effects. I changed a battery on my Suzuki Bandit last year that was nine years old.
  11. My experience of Optimates is that they are pretty reliable, I have 4 in service at the moment of various models. The green light is telling you that the voltage isn't falling below 12.3 Volts from the float charge voltage of 13.6 in half an hour. The charger doesn't "know" however how much energy is stored in the battery. As your car starts on jump leads I would expect the problem lies with the battery. I wouldn't expect that it would be necessary to add acid unless the electrolyte has been spilt, normally only the water is lost by evaporation.
  12. Sorry couldn't sleep without working it out, further to Adam's comment, a 7x13 minator in depleted uranium will weigh 44kg (without valve)!
  13. Just weighed a 7x13 minator on the bathroom scales, not very accurate I know, but 7kg. Looks like I havn't got the depleted uranium version.
  14. Yes all well here thanks. Happy birthday. You'll be hooked after an hour. Make sure you book somebody with a modern aircraft with a 4 stroke engine. I would recommend Barry Light at Tarn Farm, Cockerham. He's got a Quik 450 with a Rotax 912 4 stroke, will cruise at 90. An hour will get you out over the bay and round the Lake district and back.
  15. Hi Martin, Try draining the float chambers, you sometimes get water and old fuel collecting there. You usually find a little bleed screw at the bottom of each chamber, presume it's got 4 carbs.

  18. What you have is a morse taper, held in place by friction, designed to be exchanged for another, very common in machine tools. Google morse taper and you will find all the info you will ever need.

  20. The oil seal is integral with the bearing. According to my Escort manual the axle should be filled with 1.1 litres of oil. 3 litres sounds a lot to me, the axle casing may be becoming pressurised and finding it's way out at the weakest point.
  21. Jubilee® is a registered trade mark of L Robinson & Co (Gillingham) Ltd. In 1921 we invented the worm drive hose clip and we have been manufacturing them ever since.
  22. Martin, I presume this is a job for Friday evening. I'll have my generator, I'll bring an inspection lamp. You might be better with a 240V drill if there are a lot of holes to drill.
  23. I'm not sharing a beer, going to have a whole one to myself.
  24. Mines a Facet solid state pump supplied by Raceline with a Zetec190bhp kit. It is pictured on page 276 of the Demon Tweeks catalogue. There are three ratings, 12, 18 and 25 gallons/hour, they all look the same, not sure which mine is but Raceline or DT will advise. It should be fitted near the fuel tank.
