  1. That is so cruel and sad about your friend I'm really sorry for him. Just be there for him even though there's nothing to be said. It wouldn't take long to remove head, take the sump off and undo big ends ( a hoist or pit is easier if not, laying down... ) and tap out pistons and rods. A quick de-glaze bore clean (with drill de-glazer & parafin), renew rings (you can get oversize if bores are worn), pop them all back with new end bolts and that should last you another 18,000...
  2. "Plugs are NGK B7ECS, spec is 1700cc 234 cam, around the 130bhp mark." Don't know if Guru Roger missed this but he has always recommended B8ECS (NGK) for road work and 7's for race. Could this be the reason for fouling?
  3. And, ( yet again I go on & on) don't forget The American made Scat cast STEEL crank for the cross-flow if you decide to keep it. It's not a fancy racer thing just a simple copy of the standard unit but it'll add years to your engine life, or rather, won't go bang and take all with it like the iron standard unit AND is as cheap. From a couple of outlets in UK including Sky Ford in Hemel Hempstead.
  4. Simon, boss of Willans was/is a Caterham man....
  5. Have a 1500 ancient pre-cross flow so make of that what you will but....in the 40 years (God!) near that I've had a Seven NEVER have I EVER had a stat in... I notice no long slow heat-up and it's one thing that will never jam shut and make the engine go bang....... Control of flow could be to knock out centre of stat and fit it rather than full width of stat point. Hint...Oil and crank etc are slower to heat up than water so knowing you are up to temp is no guarantee the rest of the engine is too.

  7. I'm in the market to renew our (ex directors) Audi A6 for similar or w.h.y? If you are renewing the firms fleet/exec/director car I'd be interested. Love it to be estate but beggers can't be etc.
  8. Someone I know has a set of four original alloy wheels which were on my 1974 LOTUS EUROPA JPS, as new. A unique opportunity for a restoration project. Serious offers DAVID 01827 285 289
  9. I know but didn't want to hear it...... ☹️
  10. Would like to find out if 0.5mm is OK. I think it is... No there are no dowels and this is the first time it's happened in a long time...
  11. Head off. Result; found head gasket went on crooked on rebuild and no 1 (and to a small degree no 2) pistons have caught and compressed one side of the head gasket to half it's thickness against the unchambered part of the head... Clearance with my rough vernier is 0.5mm between top of piston and underside of head. IF I don't mess up fitting the new gasket is this enough clearance? I rev it to 7.500... OK Thanks for your thoughts guys...
  12. Def inside and has a fairly' solid' element to it (crank/con/piston rod). I've been underneath again this am turning it over and all is running clear from hitting block and revolving as it should...
  13. Rebuilt engine, new ends, pistons, rebore, new cam, followers, all bearings new but have this damn knocking coming from the front and per revolution. I've taken the dry sump off and plumbed in the oil and even run the engine with it off to see what is going on to no avail (rained a bit of oil!). Because engine out is a two-day job (old SII - you have to take everything off to get it out) I'm about to take head off. Apart from piston hitting head (albeit chambered) what else should I be looking at? Pre-x flow 1500
  14. Don't know if this is relevant but when bolting cut-out switches make sure they are on a flat plane. If not, they break inside.

  19. Ian Gardiner of IGRacing in Northants is a good man (ex F1) and has equipment to test your dampers or the knowledge to equip you with what you would like to feel in handling/cornering.
  20. Er wassthissabout proper FF engines? We have been using Millers Oils in the Historic Formula Ford series and F Junior series. They went into studies of Kent engine needs and came up with something and we've never looked back since (for 18 years...). Look up their web site. I can recommend. Get yourself a cast steel crank from Sky Ford at Hemel Hempstead too. Only £600, worth every penny.
  21. This man is good, he's been going years, knows all and does a bomb-proof kit for not-a-lot. http://www.bestekuk.co.uk/
