  1. Certainly sounds interesting. I'm thinking of getting my non standard SLR back on track in 2014. I did a few races in 2011' a couple in 2012, nothing in 2013.... The car looks sorry for itself sitting in my garage. My tendency is to do a small handful of races, especially those closer to home. That makes me a less helpful player in terms of not wanting to do a full series. Brands and Thruxton good. Donny a schlep but a nice track. I've not looked at Mag7s yet to see what they're up to. I race with a friend so rather like two drive races (same driving time, less queueing!) I will keep an eye on this - thanks for the heads up. James
  2. Anything in the 49s is respectable in my book. Looks good. Is that on slicks or something like zzrs? We got low 49s on slicks in my c240hp Superlight R with my (annoyingly faster) co-driver. We were a second or so slower on zzrs. The caterham didn't turn a wheel in 2013 and needs some tlc along with a fuel pump and I'm sure some other work. I mightbtrybto get it back on the grid in 2014. James
  3. If you overfill a little it just throws it out into catch tank. No harm done. Also, if you are using high revs constantly, such as on track, the "resting" level is lower. I tend to err on side of over filling a touch when in hard use and empty excess from catch tank. Ps I think it holds a bit over 5 litres, but I found it hard to get more than 4.5 in and that's after disconnecting bottom pipe, blue plate under tank etc. Edited by - jimmyslr on 23 Apr 2013 23:16:44
  4. Or you can lend your slick shod caterham to Jez above and he can demonstrate his trophy winning skills by taking out the brake board and your rear wing.....
  5. This one I can answer! Yes, can be done. I have 1.9 k-series, scholar block etc etc. Only a 6 speed box though so you have an advantage there. Mapped at c250 bhp. We've raced it at Brands Indy on slicks and Avon zzrs in Semsec and mag 7s. Didn't race this year but did in prior years. On slicks in 2010 I think we had a 49.0 or a 49.1, something like that. On zzrs in 2011 I think there might have been a few laps under 50.0, but not regular. They were my co-driver's times who's a good amateur. I'm a few tenths slower and I'm always a big girl's blouse around paddock. That's not hanging about, at race pace and was class leading at that time. But these are fun, amateur races so it's not like we are all Vettel-like in our skills! We then proceeded to do the driver change slowly and 20s after the window so were penalised 2 laps. Oops. Never mind as was super fun. Car is sitting in my garage unloved right now. Must race it again next year.
  6. Quoting NoLimits: Hi I can answer for all the systems above due to my representing MOG in UK (SADEV and Geartronics stockists) and our own SBD/MBE/Radical package. However I can only do this on the understanding it is for technical info only and not seen as advertising. Up to you guys if you would like me to contribute. If not please ring me to do so off line and someone else can post back instead Please go for it as I think a few of us are interested and the path to all singing/dancing sequential bozex and flappy paddles is not well worn. Oily often posts very informative explanations and is himself also in the trade and this works fine for all concerned
  7. Mike - that set up will work for flat upshifts, but doesn't do the clutchless downshifts I believe. Is that correct? I really want clutchless up and down with rev matching on down shifts. The idea is a quick flick thru 3 gears on the way into Paddock Hill bend under hard braking! I've raced a paddleshift once or twice, but in the caterham have always been old school with a 6 speed box. James
  8. I have been out of caterham circulation for over a year and am thinking again about sequential boxes, with flat shift capability. Ideally, full clutchless up/down shift capability which probably means pneumatic paddle shift. A year ago Sadev was seen as the box of choice (6k), with a Geartronics flat shift system (with the option of a Geartronics full paddle system taking it to c4k), plus fitting and Vat. Call it 15k all in for paddle shift option or more like 10k without paddles/downshift capability. I get the impression from some googling that more Caterhams have gone the Sadev route in the last year. Does anyone have any useful feedback on the various options and recommendations today? Also, I know you can source the box and the Geartronics kit, but who's installed a number into Caterhams as I assume some familiarity with the packaging inside a Caterham would be helpful. I'd rather not be someone's guinea pig! Thanks, James
  9. I'm thinking about the 2012 racing season. I will do some Mag 7s (early season down south is good for me), maybe the odd semsec, but is there anything else this year I should look at? I have a non-standard, specced-up K-series SLR, so none of the official Caterham series are suitable for me (grads, super grads etc). I don't think there are any Britcar/sports or MSVR series that suit this year. Any thoughts gratefully received, James
  10. My experience suggests a normal pressure at c22 hot (so 16-18 cold depending on how much you're pushing on / on-track). They like a LOT of front camber, as much as can be wound on on my car - I think mine are at more like 3+ degrees, but cannot remember exactly what DPR told me! They tend to understeer otherwise, but it does compromise braking a bit James
  11. Try CSCC Magnificent Sevens (events across the country) and SEMSEC (events at Ltdden and Brands). Both are designed to encompass a wide range of sevens in varying classes without being too stringent about spec as is seen in things like Graduates, Super Grads, Roadsport A etc etc. I have raced in both and they are good fun, not too serious and fairly gentlemanly (ie not much contact, unlike some of the single spec races).

    Which Harness

Personally, I would always get a 6 point harness. If you really don't want to you needn't use the crutch straps, but I tend to and don't find it uncomfortable. It really holds you into the seat well. Admittedly I race and track a lot, but I had the same when I was mostly on the road. I have a Scrhoth Hans specific 6 pointer that one of the dealers does for the Caterham (ie it has the right lengths and mountings on it. Not cheap, but very good.
  13. I reckon around 21 or 22 hot, maybe as much as 24, but not higher. Have run Dunlop (allegedly 22-24) and Michelin slicks (a little lower) and all are around here. Get the thermometer on the case whn at running temperature and look at the temp gradient and also you can speak to Michelin.
  14. I am thinking of swapping in a sequntial into my 1999 superligt R which I race. I am pushing the limits of the 6 speed and I fancy the safety/certainty/strength of the sequential. Quaife is more proven in a caterham, but Sadev have been at this successfully for years and I've used one of theirs in a Juno. I'm also thinking of a flatshift from Geartronics, but probably stopping short of a pneumatic paddle system (which we also had in the Juno). Does anyone have experiences of the above and ideas on fully fitted costs? I have droppped a note to Mad Hatter after a bit of archive research! Thanks, James
  15. I expect to do a few of these this year alongside a few SEMSEC, but have not competed in Mag7s before. I hear it's pretty friendly, gentlemen racer type stuff with modest contact (unlike some of the one type series)
