  1. VW Part number for fan switch is 823 959 481 F Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project
  2. That's a co-incidence Brent, I decided to do a bit of polishing last night too I've opted for an 82 deg stat on the block rather than in the rail. An added bonus with this approach was the housing has less depth to it, making the plumbing easier. Hooray! 3. Hi Paul. I'm not using a fan switch, I'm letting the Emerald operate the fan through a relay Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project
  4. Thanks chaps Ian,I'm going to replace the sensor anyway. Looking at the Emerald out of bounds parameters for the coolant sensor, it seems as though I'm effectively getting a short when it's connected up. I may well check the calibration of the new sensor out of curiousity though Brent 😳 😬 Oo, now you've done it! Hanns Per, I'm using the Raceline Water Rail, so have got two sensor locations at the outlet at the back, one for the M10 or whatever size it is for ECU senders and one for the smaller 1/8npt that gauges tend to use. I guess the one between pistons 2 and 3 is in the water rail for the CC cars? The only thing I've got on mine between pistons 2 and 3 is the knock sensor, which is on the left in the middle of the block. One sensor duly ordered. Just need to twiddle my thumbs until it arrives now. Bother! Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project

  6. What coolant temperature sensor are you using? Reason I ask is that I stuck with the original Ford unit and spliced the Emerald onto that. Today was my first engine start ( ) and the Emerald is displaying Water temperature issues aside, I'm staggered that my first ever engine build runs! It's got good oil pressure and I even remembered to recalibrate the TPS before starting it. Admittedly it ran like an over- rich 2-stroke to start with.. I realised the injector values in Neil Greer's map, which I was trying because I'm using the same injectors and fuel pressure, were using the injector scaling for the old K series because injector scaling isn't transferred in map files. This meant the injector pulse width was twice what it should have been Once I realised and corrected this, it ran a bit better... 7. I second what Doug says The Zetec is a great engine by all accounts and a worthwhile investment now that the spotlight has turned to it's successor, as prices are dropping a bit. I've used Raceline for my Duratec conversion and for some other bits. They're innovative and experienced, their engines are proven and the engineering is so professional that the installations look like Caterham's own. Peter's technical background means he's respected by a lot of the big names in the motorsport, engine building and racing industries too. It's worth mentioning that they're a small and popular outfit and although they always make time for their customers, you may find lead-times slip a little but this can simply because they're at the mercy of their suppliers. One thing's for sure, you are unlikely to be disappointed with the end result. edited to add: Of course, Ammo/RaceCo would also be worth chatting to; another very well-respected engine builder who may(?) be just as close to you as Raceline Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project Edited by - k80rum on 21 Jul 2009 18:25:13

    Running-in oil

How-do My 'normal' oil was in fact going tobe Castrol Edge 0W-30 for the wet-sumped engine (the Comma 5W50 seems to be considered a bit too thick by some engine builders although Minister/CC seem to recommend it) It seems as though most mineral oils are around the 15w-40 or 20w-50 mark though Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project

A quick oil question: Would Castrol GTX 15w40 High Mileage oil be considered okay for running-in my Duratec, given that it's a mineral oil? Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project Edited by - k80rum on 13 Jul 2009 17:14:54

  16. Regin: Thank you for the offer of machining them for the O-rings, it's very kind and much appreciated. Norm: They're much thicker than core plugs unfortunately but thanks for the suggestion I've decided to bite the bullet and JB-weld them in. I'd originally used a petrol-resistant Loctite sealant I had, but I'm not convinced it'll remain airtight and I'm never expecting to use the ports in the head again in any case. Because the ports are angled into the head, I don't expect the JB-weld will ever be exposed to much fuel/air mixture but the plugs sit against a smaller seating face in any case. Thanks to you all for your help and suggestions 😶‍🌫️ Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project Edited by - k80rum on 13 Jul 2009 12:22:18
  17. Hi Regin, Sorry, I assumed it was fairly universal. It is indeed a Duratec and I'm blanking off the injector ports in the head because I've put the injectors in the Jenveys. The ports themselves are just 15mm(?) holes for standard injectors. A quick and dirty solution would be to use the redundant Ford injectors to fill the holes with old the fuel rail to hold them in place. I'd like something a bit neater though and Raceline supplied me with a set of machined plugs to fit the holes but as I say, the tolerance seems a bit generous. They're very simple aluminium blanks, about 10mm in height. I'd sealed them to keep them airtight as you say but I suppose they need to be a very tight fit rather than sealed or if any backpressure from valve overlap could cause them to pop out I can always give Raceline a ring this week as a last resort but the question hadn't been asked on BC before so I thought I'd pose it. I'll dig the micrometer out to compare the hole and plug sizes and perhaps ask for some replacements. PS did you get my reply to your last email? Not that I was expecting a reply but sometimes things don't make it past our keen corporate mailfilter Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project Edited by - k80rum on 13 Jul 2009 07:48:39
  18. What's the recommended way of fitting the injector port blanking plugs? Are they just an interference fit and you drift them in or is it a good idea to seal them with anything when fitting? Mine seem a close fit but don't really seem to need pressing home which I'm a bit concerned about. Having never fitted any to a head before I'm not sure what the norm is.. 19. If anyone has a cam position sensor connector from their loom which they're not intending to use, can you let me know please. I managed to bin mine on the assumption that I wasn't going to run a cam sensor but have since had a change of plan 🙆🏻 Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project
  20. Hi Willie Not that I can see. They're not configurable. I suppose you might be able to take them apart and replace the LED inside but I don't know how easy they'd be to butcher.. Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project
  21. Hi Rupert, I've had my buttons for a year now. All but one seem to have held up well although I think it's still too early to say. I too lost one of the tops - the die-cut inserts that sit on the face of the button and display what it does. I think some cheap glue is used in the construction; I superglued the face (which I found in the footwell ) back on and haven't had any trouble with it since. Bank on using some micro-relays to operate things and a dimmer to keep the button brightness down at night, if you decide to go ahead Darren E K80 RUM Website and Emerald maps library Home of the long-term, supercharged Duratec project
