  1. I think the kit is on Caterham's site here (£140 +vat , though they claim to be out of stock) Beat me to it - I see you found it... Edited by - CB on 18 Nov 2012 19:19:22
  2. not sure why you say it isn't usable. Despite the diff issues (that affected some rather more than others), ~50 Academy cars ran with it like that all year.
  3. This year's Academy race regs are here Section 5.8 - "Radius arms should be mounted with the forward point in the lower of the two mounting holes in the chassis."
  4. "Even without the modified carrier I think you'd be going some in road use to actually compress the suspension far enough to be a problem (unlikely not impossible!)" From my experience with the old carrier I'm not convinced by that to be honest. Take one "not particularly light" driver, corner weight the car, later add a passenger and then drive along a standard British road (i.e. not exactly smooth, with the odd small pothole). End result = more clonking of de-dion against the old carrier than I ever got 1-up on track.
  5. Caterham Midlands...? A flat floor and geometry set up for race cars is ~£150 +vat. That may be a "special" to encourage us to add it to the list of pre 2013 season work to be done but I can't imagine it would be too much more than that for road.
  6. On the new design carrier, the bolts at the back that attach the carrier to the back plate of the diff are countersunk into the carrier. On the old one, they aren't countersunk. An old style one is here you can see the silver bolts on the upper back. On the new one, those aren't there. The bolt loosening seems to be hastened by the de-dion hitting those mounting bolts and jarring the whole assembly. We have been told that the resulting "witness marks" (aka dents) in the de-dion aren't an issue. We shall see...
  7. Before you get too much further, it might be worth asking Caterham about the new carrier for the BMW diff.... This year's Academy cars are being fitted with them over the next week. We've had a bunch of failures with the "old" design apparently due to the de-dion hitting the rear bolts attaching the diff to the carrier. The bolts at the back of the new carrier are now countersunk into the carrier rather than protruding and the whole thing seems to have been beefed up. Edited by - CB on 1 Oct 2012 09:22:53

    14" Tyres x 4

Any particular type? Age no object?
  9. Likely off to the track day at Brands today. We have a race at Brands this coming Saturday. Practice is required....
  10. "Question, can you use the last 5 litres in a Sigma tank? " - the answer I was given by Caterham Midlands a couple of months ago is "no"

    BMW Diff

From one of this year's Academy build diaries - a BMW diff here (though you wouldn't have the circular flange - it gets removed later in the build and the drive shaft inserts directly) Edited by - CB on 18 Jul 2012 16:57:13

    BMW Diff

The Sierra diff casing bolts directly to the chassis. The BMW is physically smaller (and black - the Sierra one is plain alloy I think) and has a frame around it (that bolts to the diff at the front sides and the back). That frame is then bolted to to the chassis.

    BMW Diff

It might be worth checking that the noise isn't actually the mounting bolts or the carrier coming apart - a number of this year's Academy cars have had "issues" and we are all being very careful to do a lot of checking whilst CC work out what to do about it...
  14. Putting it on the steering wheel may well be a good start (I hadn't thought of that - had forgotten that the pad comes off the wheel) - at least until I find some better way . thanks all.
  15. I have just invested in an AIM Solo lap timer, and now need to work out how best to fit it (ideally without drilling holes in the dash). It can't be tucked too far out of the way as it needs to be able to get a GPS signal. Anyone done this / have any suggestions? thanks, Chris

    my 1st 7 build

Make lots of use of the technical help line (i.e. Caterham Midlands). The number of times I spent ages trying to work out why the manual didn't quite seem to make sense given the actual bits in front of me only to have Caterham say "oh yes, it's changed. Try this..." btw - the "new" manual published end the end of last year was already out of date at the point it was released. Draw your own conclusions about how accurate it is likely to be after 6 months (one case in point - I know of at least one new paint job needed due to the fact that the front brake lines didn't seal properly if built as per the manual and brake fluid leaked/sprayed onto the side skin. The flexible lines had less screw thread than they used to apparently). If something doesn't feel/look quite right then check...

    Handbrake switch

I didn't connect the switch either, and it passed IVA in Jan. I seem to remember the Caterham Midlands guys saying that it was needed in Europe (handbrake turns the brake lights on or some such.)

    racecraft training

I would be very interested as well
  19. As per a previous post, I was told that if I moved it then having it on the passenger side of the tunnel would probably be the best place - as it would actually be reachable when strapped in by a 6 point harness and a pair of wrist loops. And yes, the loom is already long enough if you just pass it back through the tunnel and up and under the edge of the tunnel cover.
  20. the ones supplied to the Academy seem to be a "bolt through the grill" variety with a plate front and back (here). At least I think that is the idea...
  21. Or cheat and ask Caterham to set and check at the post build check....
