  1. Morning I have an old enormous red warning light in my dash which I am replacing (with one that doesn't look like it came of the control panel of Thunderbird 2!!) Wires to the old unit are black and black&white as shown in pic. Does anyone know which of those two is the 12v feed to the battery please ? Cheers
  2. #15 - no offence meant but I agree with other posters, I think you are over-engineering what in practice is pretty straightforward. Also my earlier comment on "friendly" testing stations stands - and I think you misunderstand what I was saying, there should be no question of anyone being compromised. By "friendly" I mean that they know our cars and understand those regs that are peculiar to the various configurations of the 7. Not all are used to testing 7s and if it's clear that they are either not au fair with (or will accept) the relevant test for emissions for your car then why persevere and risk a fail ? Take it to a tester who knows the marque ...surely ?
  3. To the OP - Glad you got it sorted. I have a 90 Xflow, only ever had a visual smoke test. If the tester is being awkward I would find a Caterham friendly MOT centre as one of the posters said.
  4. Have never used slip/anti-seize on plugs, not necessary.
  5. Hi Tom Welcome - I have a 1990 1700 SS. On the recommendation of James Whiting (7 guru) I run NGK BPR6EIX's on my Xflow Supersprint. They're pre-gapped and superb, don't get the fouling issues that are common used with B8ECs

  7. Ditto earlier comment - mine had evidently been patched earlier by someone in its life and then one day it dumped the lot on a BP forecourt....horrendous and made me popular with the garage ( not!). Get a new tank, piece of mind alone is worth it :-)
  8. Evening all Took the car put for the first time since Nov - runs perfectly (1990 xflow) but car pulls hard to the right under braking. Seems to be front brakes, No sign of leaking fluid so suspect seized piston maybe ? Any chance of these being freed with a bit of (safe area) hard braking and pumping or is it a strip/rebuild job ?
  9. JP You may already have done so but I'd check wiring in case of rodent damage and also fuel hoses.....last thing you need is to get it running only to have a fire (electrical or fuel !) Good luck and love to see a pic in time !
  10. Sorry Billy... I was attempting a (rubbish) music-themed joke
  11. Blackmore you say ? Are you sure it wasn't deep purple, rather than blue ?
  12. Hi Gordon If Terry doesn't want it I'd be interested ! Thanks Martin
  13. The advice given on here is spot on and, I would have thought, sufficient ?
  14. Andrew I have a 1700 SS Xflow and had a similar issue, nearly drove me mad. Replaced everything you had done and even had a hole drilled in the fuel cap in case of an airlock. Problem eventually traced to dodgy igniter in the (Aldon) distributor...worth a look. My car would run fine for 10-15 mins then same issue as you, refused to go past 4k revs, die and then 20 mins later run fine Thread can be found under 'XFLOW WOES - FINALLY SORTED'. Good luck
  15. Blatchat has taken some stick over the years I've been a member, some of it deserved - most of not, but I've always found the Tech Talk absolutely brilliant and has gotten me out of a problem more times than I care to remember, the other elements of the forum have been great too. #10 is spot on.
  16. Thanks to all for reply - all fixed... dodgy earth on one fog and the unit crumbled when touched so luckily I had a wiper knocking around so chucked it on and also a blown fuse ( that looked on first inspection to be okay). Thanks again and Jonathan you're a gent chap thank you
  17. Hi all MOT tomorrow and weird lights issue. All working fine earlier but one fog light out so I swapped bulb and now both fog lights out and passenger side tail light won't work ( but worked fine before and works as a brake light). have tried swapping bulbs but nothing ... anyone know which fuse it is (fog lights) under the dash mine is a 1990 Xflow 1700 Supersprint standard spec electrics not my forte so any advice much appreciated as I scrabble about in a freezing garage ..... thank you
