  1. Hi Roger Thanks for posting, appreciate the extra advice. I know you mentioned the sealant issue on the other post - hopefully it's not that but its on my list to check. In terms of the coil I'm almost certain it isn't the problem as I've tried 3 now BUT I've arranged to borrow a brand new, tested, Flamethrower coil to try it out and see what happens......belt, braces and string I guess you'd call it ! Cheers HWS
  2. Hi Virden I do agree that it sounds like it's the coil (and that was the first thing I replaced when the problems started) but I've now tried 3 (the old one plus 2 new ones) and it's unlikely that they're all duff. Appreciate the posts though. I'm going to press on and replace the fuel pump, stick a filter in, get the dizzy and igniter either refurbed or replaced and then see if that collectively cures it. If not then I've gone as far as I can and I'll have to book it into a local 7 specialist and get them to sort it. Always prefer to try and do it myself as all goes into the memory banks for the future but demands of family and running a business mean that my scope for spending endless hours in the garage trying to get the bugger to run properly are limited. Will post an update when it's sorted (either way).
  3. Cheers for posting all - excuse me condensing responses below Ed: Over fuelling? Are the plugs wet? Nope Has it run well previously? What have you changed? Yes it was fine, changed nothing. Is the coil located somewhere warm. Nope - have felt it and it's not hot/overheating Any signs of fuel leaks? Nope Have you had any feedback from Roger KIng of this parish? He's a crossflow god. Yes, Roger very kindly posted a while back he thinks it could be debris in teh fuel pick up and/or ignition...partly why I wanted to fit a filter once I've put the new pump in/blown out lines as a belt and braces job. Just because you have swapped all the bits doesn't mean you haven't got issues there. I've had new coils fail quickly, and old one's last donkey's years. That's a fair point although I have tried 2 brand new coils, lead sets and plugs from different sources and the problem remains so it's unlikely You didn't say where you were located? Sorry - Gulldford, Surrey Thanks for tips on earth leads and arcing, will check...!! Virden: Did you drill a small hole in the fuel cap to prevent a vacuum forming in the tank as the fuel reduces? Yep, it's definitely not that. HWS
  4. Hi Ed Thanks for posting - just had a look on Demon's site at the filter king - out of interest where did you mount yours ? Re: the misfire there's a separate post on BC about the whole saga but basically; Symptoms: - car runs and starts perfectly from cold with an even tickover - drives normally for 10-20 mins at all speeds, pulls well, smooth acceleration, no issues - usually after 20 mins it starts to suddenly misfire at speed, eases off when I drop down to 50mph and then as soon as I try and accelerate it coughs and splutters and eventually grinds to a halt. Lots of popping and bangs through the exhaust. Wait 15 mins and set off and again and all runs well for a few miles until the whole cycle repeats. Leads, plugs and coil (Bosch Blue) are all new and I am fitting a new fuel pump in case it's that. Fuel tank was fitted brand new recently (and was thoroughly sluiced out before it went in). Carbs were checked over and all okay. My car has an Aldon dizzy (103 FXY ULS) fitted with an ignitor. Looks oldish so I'm speaking to Aldon about having it tested and either refurbed/replaced to rule that out. Some of the guys on here thought it might be air starvation/filler cap issue but I've ruled that out ...definitely seems to be either fuel and/or ignition issue. Sounds like you are familiar with Xflows - any other thoughts gratefully received ? It's a real pain in the arse - had to abandon an MOT test as the bloody thing broke down en route ! HWS
  5. Morning all Just preparing to replace the fuel pump and blow out fuel lines on my car (as part of attempt to cure misfire) and think it might be worth putting a couple of inline filters in (one between tank and pump and the other between pump and carbs) to filter out any crud, although the tank is new. Jus interested to see what other xflow owners use / any recommendations / links would be appreciated. Cheers ! HWS
  6. Cheers both GJT - noted, I just don't use mine at all now.
  7. Thanks Nigel - something else to check I guess ....cheers. I'm just getting ready to order a new fuel pump / blow out the fuel lines. Anyone recognise this model, doesn't look like the usual crossflow pumps that I can see advertised for sale on various sites ? http://postimg.org/gallery/2ztihv2ki/
  8. Hi Michael Reading the other posts sounds like it's just me ! In fairness I think it's the choke that cause the problems - Paul Deslandes very kindly sorted out a problem for me once which was probably choke related but I can never get my webers to run smoothly, even after they were tuned (about 3 months after I bought the car)
  9. Evening Roger Thanks for taking time to post, much appreciated. I put a new fuel tank into the car fairly recently and before fitting it I had a good look through the filler aperture in the new tank to make sure there was no crud (in the tank) so I don't think it's that in all honestly, however something may have come loose in the meantime perhaps. Feedback on here has , as ever, been excellent and enlightening so I think my plan of attack will be as follows; - disconnect/blow out all fuel lines in case there's crud in them and run the car/see what happens - replace the fuel pump (don't think it's that but cheap to do and rules something out) and run the car/see what happens - replace the Aldon dizzie and run the car/see what happens Hopefully the combination of that will sort the problem. If not then I'll probably SORN it until I can spend time going through every nut and bolt on it. I'm getting married next month and planning a house move plus trying to sort an aged parent living a fair drive away so the Xflow will have to go on the naughty step for a good while as available time is limited!! Thanks all for posting and I will post when I cure the problem, might help some other poor devil ! HWS
  10. Hello there Paul - soon you'll know the history of my car better than me ! Yes I took the filler cap clean off this morning and tried to run without it for a few yards but no joy. I think you could be right actually. I'm not convinced its the fuel pump and the Aldon looks pretty old and is one of the few ancillaries I haven't changed on the car. It's an Aldon dizzy with ignitor (side entry cap). When the car grinds to a halt it reminds me of a Triumph Spitfire I had once as a teen that did the same, and that was invariably down to dodgy points. I might just bite the bullet and buy a new distributor and then take it for a long blast down some quiet roads on a day off and see what happens ! Thanks for posting, hope all good with you. Best regards, Martin
  11. To the OP: Love my Xflow........when it runs. Webers are glorious but an absolute pain in the butt.
  12. Morning gents Despite carrying out the mods for the fuel filler (worth doing anyway) and checking the tank breather is okay the problem came back with a vengeance on the way to the MOT this morning and I had to cancel the test. Broke down on a bend on a fast road, no run-off and huge lorries whizzing by - a bit hairy at times. Recap of the problem: - car runs and starts perfectly from cold with an even tickover - drives normally for 10-20 mins at all speeds, pulls well, smooth acceleration - usually after 20 mins it starts to misfire at speed, eases off when I drop down to 50mph (and often disappears) and then as soon as I try and accelerate it coughs and splutters and would grind to a halt if I didn't ease off. Lots of really loud popping and bangs through the exhaust. as it misfires. - eventually the car coughs and grinds to a halt and although it will start it sounds dog rough on tickover. - If I wait 10-15 mins for the car to cool it then starts and runs perfectly, accelerates, pulls etc normally....all fine....then after another 10 minutes of running the problem starts all over again. It's recently had new plugs/leads/coil/ new fuel tank etc .... Definitely seems a heat related problem - a couple of people on here have mentioned the fuel pump, I'm happy to change it to eliminate things but is it likely to cause the issue ? I thought that if the fuel pump goes it would just fail period whereas this is intermittent ? The only thing I haven't replaced is the fuel pump and Aldon distributor...or could it just be the Webers playing up ? Any final thoughts much appreciated - literally pulling my hair out. I love this car but it really is being to make me just want to stick the thing in the garage and forget it ! Cheers HWS
  13. Cheers gents. Hello Paul !! Yep I've got the 400 fitted on my car, cool - will do. Yep she's all good thank you (touches wood) and has been out on a few runs :-) Hope all good with you? Best Martin
  14. Afternoon all First chance I've had to post but just wanted to offer a collective thanks. I took the car out and sure enough after 20 minutes it started playing up. I pulled over, took the filler cap off and can't say I heard an inrush of air but the engine note immediately picked up and the car ran with no problems for the rest of the run. I did change the fuel tank for a brand new one not that long ago and I wonder if I have pinched the breather somewhere - Boot floor out tomorrow for a look see. Thanks again to all who posted - appreciate it !
  15. Gents Thank you very much for taking the time to post - appreciated. Meant to reply yesterday but waylaid by relatives ! I'm going to check everything and work through it, including the fuel pump as it looks original and not touched for a while. Jonathan and SM25T - you could be on to something, If it does turn out to be no/not enough air getting into the tank (and is confirmed by a rush of air when I open the filler cap, what's the cure? I have one of the aero type caps fitted (came with the car when I bought it). HWS
  16. Evening... Irritating problem with the car, interested in anyone who's had similar experience. My 1700 Supersprint had developed a bad misfire/poor running a while back that was eventually traced (thanks to a site member) to dodgy choke mechanism messing up the Webers. I had them looked at at the time and all was fine and I don't use the choke now (at all). However - car has developed a persistent misfire when running hot. Have changed the leads, checked and regapped the plugs (which were nearly new anyway) and replaced the coil with Bosch blue. The throttle cable was sticking recently so I replaced that and operation is smooth and silky. Symptoms: - car runs and starts perfectly from cold with an even tickover - drives normally for 10-20 mins at all speeds, pulls well, smooth acceleration - usually after 20 mins it starts to misfire at speed, eases off when I drop down to 50mph (and often disappears) and then as soon as I try and accelerate it coughs and splutters and would grind to a halt if I didn't ease off. Lots of popping and bangs through the exhaust. Any ideas ? The only thing that hasn't been touched is the dizzie (an Aldon) I thought it was electrical but thoughts now switching to but Fuel (pump) although does seem heat related issue ? The Fuel tank was replaced with new last year (and was swilled out and cleaned before being put in) so I've ruled out crud in the tank etc. Any thoughts appreciated ! HWS
