I realise this is an old topic that has been discussed many times, but I am finding lots of old links that no longer work when I search for a diagram.

I am about to order some silicone hoses as my current hoses have split and I also want to fit a PRRT (as I'm having trouble with air locks and it sounds a worthwhile mod).

Does anyone have a diagram or picture of a how it should be installed?
I think I have a pretty good idea but would like to make sure.

Also can anyone advise what additional silicone hoses I will need in addition to a standard K series hose set?  At the moment I think I will need a 32mm t piece (to go in the hose enterning the top of the rad) and a 45 degree 32mm hose (to run down to the PRRT that is fitted to the vertical section coming out of the bottom of the rad)- is this correct,?  Can anyone advise roughly how long the hose needs to be?

thanks in advance!

Adam

Noting that T7 has shared his pic -I'm happy to take a couple of shots tomorrow at closer range if needed. One of the best 7 mods I have done....never looked back

Thanks for the pic T7.
Did you have the hose that runs around the back of the engine still connected into the old thermostat housing on the block?

Rog, thanks for the offer, some close up pics would be much appreciated.

Yes still connected. Also left the original stat in place after cutting out the centre bulb and spring etc., this is because of the outer rubber seal needs to be still used. The additional hoses and connectors were standard generic ones off eBay, just a 'T' and a straight connector is all you need.

The system worked a treat and kept the temp whilst the car was moving locked at 80C, never had an airlock again. One tip, buy the genuine PRT not the cheaper after market one.

Yep, same as T7.  I used to work for the company that owned the former Rover parts business, so I took  out the old thermostat and fitted the replacement through flow item. I’ve got a bag of about ten if you’d like me to send you one.

Very interested in doing this mod!   I was concerned by the earlier post that the hose that runs around the rear of the engine was deleted.   I have the "submarine" mod where the ECU and Temp Gauge sensors are moved from above the exhaust manifold and repositioned to the rear RH side of the engine.  The earlier post diagram showed the sensors back above the exhaust which I would consider a retrograde step.

Only other observation from the photo is that this car does not have an Apollo Tank fitted.  Does the effect the hose routing or layout?

Is there a definitive parts list for the PRRT (genuine Rover part) and the Hose Kit (would like to go Silicon as current hoses are looking tired)

Put me down for one of your through flow Thermostats please Rog!

Apollo still fits. I've even managed to get a laminova in the top hose of mine too, which makes things pretty snug. I used a silicon T off the rad.

Couple of pics from when it was mid re-skin at 7workshop last year.

Thanks, All starts to become clearer.   Nice to see you have the NRV in the pipe between the Apollo and breather on top cover.  Stops all that oil draining back to the sump and no oil pressure (indicated) for several seconds on start-up!

Hi Brian,

I purchased-"Thermostat Housing - PEL500110 - Genuine" from Rimmer Bros. I also bought a length of black silicon hose and cut to suit as I went along. I'll look for the original t/stat bypass and send it to you...a couple of shots my installation. I have a dry sump so less to avoid up front.

I'd go for a QED remote stat.

OK so not as cheap as a PRRT but ultimately the QED sorted out all my problems in one fail swoop.

PRRT diagram.pdf

I did this mod nearly 10 years ago on my K Series VVC. I have posted above a link to the diagram and instructions that I used (hope the link works!)

This installation has been on the car now long enough for any problems to emerge but hot and cold, it has ensured my temps are always rock solid.

I got the key parts from Rimmer Brothers - not sure if the part numbers still apply but the original Rover/Land Rover part numbers are:

  • PRRT - PEL500110 (Land Rover part number)
  • Replacement thermostat Flange (to replace the existing thermostat) - PEL000040A (MG Rover part number).

Hope that helps - I also added a T Piece as shown and silicon hoses. The system also allows for easy coolant replacement without any airlock problems.

Thanks everyone for all the responses.

@brianjhall31

Best place I have found for an original PEL500110 thermostat is https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/thermostat-pipe-genuine-pel500110-p-26788.html

Re hose kits, not sure, trying to work out if it is best getting a standard kit from one of the usual suppliers: Samco, Classic Silicone Hoses and adapting it or seeing if standard hoses from https://www.siliconhoses.com/ or https://www.autosiliconehoses.com/ can be made to work.

@rogneedham

Thanks, one of your empty thermostat fittings would be great.  I will send you a message.

The PRRT was developed for the LR Freelander soon after it's launch. The K series installation in the Freelander was clearly different from its' original intended purpose and they suffered from horrendous air locks etc. Hence the island-4x4 link.

The Rimmer Bros website also has a cheaper aftermarket alternative. As someone who used to source these parts for Xpart, with the time now passed, the choice of premium vs next supplier will be negligible

I used Samco hoses and just bought one long length and carefully cut to length as needed - straightforward.

@Adam- a PEL000040A is duly reserved. They only cost me a £ or two each so please make a charitable donation and I'll cover postage
