Ferrino
Looking to order some Protech shocks for a widetrack De Dion S3 project. Duratec motor. Mostly road, but occasional track. What spring rates have people spec’d on their Protechs, please?Last car was a narrow-track, bike-engined, live-axled 7, so chalk and cheese! Thanks! SM25T
I bought mine through ProComp Motorsport in Birmingham. They advised on the spring ratings for my touring needs in an SV. They also revalved the Protech dampers to suit the Caterham.

Toby S
Mines not a widetrack, but I've got Protech shocks (single adjusters) on a 1400 Supersport and I went for 250 fronts, 150 rears spring rates for mainly road use - these replaced 300 fronts and 200 rears which I found a bit hard for road use
Lotus Boy
What sort of money are we talking for a set of four ProTech spring and damper set ups? Thanks,David
SM25T
I paid £576 for 4 springs and dampers including delivery. Bought from ProComp Motorsport.
Lotus Boy
Blimey Ian, that seems good value. Not much more money than having my billies refurbished, though I guess the ProTech aren't adjustable platforms?
SM25T
Adjustable platforms and 1-way adjustable dampers... series
7 wonders of the world
......and go for the spherical bearing (Rose Joint) version too.Make sure you give Kevin the correct details re the Dedion open length, which is influenced by the lower mount mount location either thro or under the tube, springs Front 225 / 250 Rear 130 /
Ferrino
Would you go 225/130 for a road-focussed Duratec? Also, do you know the appropriate spring lengths and open-damper lengths for a post-96 widetrack with the "under-the-tube" DD pickup point, please? Is the spherical bearing option OK for the road? 7 wonders of the world
I ran 250 / 150I'm no racing snake and there are some nasty cats eyes on the roads over here to, if your running wet sump I would certianly go 250 on the front.I ran with the orange front ARB and no rear ARBRose joint no problem it rids the suspension of the parasitic stiction inherent with the bush set up.......Cant check the lengths up front as I'm now Freestyle inboard.... Strangely
Do you have rose joints at the top of the rear dampers? Did you have have to do anything extra to make that work?(I've got Protech dampers already, but I need to get some extended top eyes, and wondered whether I could go to rose joints at the same time.) SM25T
No Rose joints on any of my Protech dampers. I needed extended top eye on fronts to clear wishbone mounting.
Lotus Boy
Ian, Is that normal for all Caterhams to need the top eye extenders?i have the pre96 chassis where the damper uses the same bolt as the top rear wishbone mount.
SM25T
I dont know. I'll send you a photo.
Strangely
I have post-96 wide-track at the front, and my Protech dampers don't have extenders. The rear doesn't currently have extenders, but I need them in order to achieve both decent ground clearance under my sump at the front, and acceptable rake. This is due to the twin facts that my idea of "decent ground clearance" is higher than most due to me smashing a sump on the the crappy Berkshire roads last year, and that I run the car on 175/55R13 CR500 tyres, which are about the smallest diameter that Sevens run on. SM25T
Do you have adjustable spring platforms for height adjustment ?
Strangely
Yes.
SM25T
Surprised that you also need extended top eye for ground clearance. I needed it to get spring top mount clear of wishbone.
Strangely
I don't need the extenders at the front, only the rear. The only reason I can't raise the front higher is because that makes the rake ridiculously low, because I can't currently (without extenders) raise the back any further. TomB
It might be worth looking at the Nitron Street Series damper at a non-dissimilar price to the Protechs. As always, its worth having a chat with Simon at Meteor Motorsport as part of your research. https://www.raceshocks.uk/shop/automotive/nitron/nitron-street-series-for-caterham/https://www.raceshocks.uk/
Area Representative manningpaul Posted October 22, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted October 22, 2019 By my reckoning the Nitrons work out considerably dearer at £740 plus VAT, virtually £900.Protech were £576 if I remember, unless I am mistaken? SM25T
That's what I paid a year ago.
robert green
I believe Caterham fitted progressive springs which seem to make a lot of sense. What do people feel about changing to fixed rate springs, or are similar progressive springs available from protech and the like?
SM25T
I replaced 130lb progressive rears with 175lb linear rears. Work fine.
