Tyre choice for 14 inch rims

I've had Nankang NS-2R on mine for the last 6 years, a combination of fast road and track use. I've not had any issues with them, including a few wet weather drives.

The first set of tyres lasted about 9k miles which I thought wasn't too bad. That included around 5 track days.

If I really wanted to splash out I'd go for the R888Rs, but they were well over double the price of the Nankangs.

Following this thread as I really do need to change my 14" tyres for this season. It seems that Rain Expert 3 are no longer available, does anyone know how RE5 compare?

Mainly for dry road use, but nice to have some grip if get caught in a downpour.

I know Caterham fit Avon ZT7 to their new lower powered cars, are these worth considering?

Only other road use tyre I was considering is Toyo Proxes CF2, but can't find any reviews of what they are like on a Seven.

Any recommendations appreciated, thank you.

Hi all,

Resurrecting this thread as I'm in the same position as Kent Low Flyer: choosing between the ZT7 and the Rainexpert 5s for 14 inch rims. I can't find any reviews of the 5s on here, only the discontinued 3s. Any opinions most welcome!

Thanks,

Guy

I have newish RainExperts on my Golf Mk4, but I would not choose them for the lightweight seven. Toyo R888Rs are a fantastic summer Caterham-friendly road tyre, and they cope well with damp and wet conditions - while also encouraging you to take care. I have 14” minilites for most of my touring type adventures, and a set of 13” for the better quality roads.

Personally I think the Goodyear Efficient Grip will take some beating as it scores highly in so many industry test reviews.

Don't know much about them, are they made for light vehicles such as the Caterham?  Most tyres on the market are unfortunately aimed at much heavier vehicles

Pretty well all the 14" tyres out there from the mainstream manufactures are not specialist fit for lightweight sports cars.  That said, neither were the Avon ZV3 or ZT7.  If you move up the price/performance bracket then the Toyo R888 come into scope

What is the reason?

Rainexperts are poor or your preference is something grippier that is compromised in wet / persistent rain?

The RainExperts are a chunky heavy tyre, with meaty sidewalls. For the heavier golf they rumble along fine, but lack the finesse I want on the seven where the relationship between tyre and suspension is much closer.

Just driven a three hour round trip to Millwoods ( usual excellent service with pitstop like speed changing  a wheel bearing) through torrential rain and lots of standing water in  Gloucestershire on 14 inch older Rainexperts. Excellent reassuring performance, cannot see why the newer version should be any worse. Also recommend the Morgan windscreen wipers over the Caterham standard!

I understand the Rain Experts are a hard compound compared to Rainsport (not available in 14").

I have used Goodyear Efficient Grip  - a good all round choice for a standardish car with moderate power - 150. Excellent in the wet but still a relatively hard compound.

I am now, after 6 years, changing to Yokohama A08RS, as recommended and supplied by Camskill. Give them a call and chat through the choices.

Happy to chat with you if you send me a message.

Hi,

I'm on the same journey now and defaulting to the RainExperts, but a little worried about reviews saying they are quite chunky/stiff.  What did you end up going for?
