Duratec ECU

What would the POBC recommend as the best ECU for a Duratec 280?

Omex seems to be my choice at the moment 600 series or the 720 series with full sequential injection and ability to run coil on plugs as well.

It will have to be set up and mapped here on the RR and run with the dth 54mm Jenvay tb.

Emerald may very well be the best choice if you are near it's creators, but going outside the UK very few tuners know of them. Talk to your tuner/RR and see what they recommend, all ECUs does the same thing anyway *smile*

True, but they are so easy to map that it almost does not matter. Any even just modestly talented tuner should be able to map an Emerald.

 

There's a couple of features I miss, but that's another issue.

The place I use has not seen any of the UK makes and suggests trying our local ones, that I want to stay clear of.

At least all the UK ones have lots of experience with the Duratec motors and there is only a very few 7s running the Duratec here.

I will do most of the setup with my Innovate LM2 and learn the system then get it on the RR, I had to do my Weber Alpha Pro system my self and that is the first one I have ever done, I am sure there not as difficult and more user friendly.

And there is always Blatchat 😬

I would like a system with full sequential injection and not batch injection, that should narrow the systems I should use.

How come? Mostly asking out of curiosity as I have just bought a locally developed and manufactured ECU...locally to Denmark that is, not South Africa 😬 The one I got works like a charm, has a rock solid reputation, and the best part is that the guy who developed it lives 30 minutes from my home and does the tuning himself.

When I fitted my Alpha Weber system Dave from our club was building his Zetec like mine, he fitted the weber TBs and a local ECU after two days on the RR with one of the guys from the company who makes them it was all taken of the car as it was Sh1t.

He has fitted another local one that is working but still needs the starting fuel mapping done right, Its been over two years now since it was fitted.

I would like to stick with companies that know what's going on, I do live in a third world country 😬

living in Belgium I wanted a localish supplier and found John van Kronenburg in Holland, just outside Eindhoven. Having had some problems with DTA I switched totally to their system. It is for a K series which was very unusual for them, Duratects normal and really specialise in modifying BMW and Audies. Incredible facilities. I have had a couple of issues and they talked me through it and solved the problem on line.

See their web site vankronenburg.nl and see what you think, I thoroughly recommend them; I have no financial interest in the company itself.

In 7 years have always passed the technical control here which is very hard on emissions at idle and 2000 rpm. They don't believe in a special set up for this test, they just seem to do it right.

Aahhh yes, not a sunshine kind of story *smile*

I can only relay information that I got from my tuner, and he was none too impressed with Emerald but Omex was a lot better.

 

When I was researching which ECU to use, I came to the conclusion that as long as you stick to these low budget ECUs there really isn't much difference. But it is quite difficult to make a comparison without having tried them out, as they all can do pretty much the same. And all brands have proponents and opponents...

 

If you are feeling brave and in a DIY mood, you could always try a MegaSquirt *smile*

Why bother with sequential? Batch injection with single injectors is good for 300+ bhp, and is simpler if there are any transition issues between inner & outer injectors - which you notice on a light car!

That's what Andrew from Omex suggested, and I was only going to run four 490cc injectors as Ammo recommended.

It is my understanding that batch vs. sequential has nothing to do with top end bhp. Sequential injection offers better emission and fuel economy (if set up properly), but at the cost of added complexity and tuning time.

gundersen that is what I was told, same at the top end but better idle control with sequential.

not really what I am bothered about I don't plan to let it idle much 😬

No cat and no lambda either.

Just started putting the head and motor together this week so wont be long *cool*

If you want to map fuel per cylinder for absolutely peak bhp or flat out economy, then you need sequential too. But that's in to the realm of super-serious! And you've probably worn out your engine by the time you've finished playing 😬. If you're that serious you have a pile of engines to play with...
