    carbs to tb's

Just made the jump and drove her back up the M1 junct15a to 20 this afternoon - 2 deg and a lot of fresh air ie no windscreen. Very very smooth drive , no shunting at low speeds , 20 bhp increase on the carbs and 10 lb increase in torque so suprised how much of an increase. Will miss the carbs very much but have made the move now !

    Which engine?

Quoting Dr Slotter: They're completely different. Ford co-designed the engine that Caterham call the 'Sigma' with Yamaha and the engine tyhat Caterham call the 'Duratec' is really a Mazda MZR engine, although obviously designed by Mazda when it was 33% owned by Ford. The confusion arises because Ford badge all of their gasoline engines as 'Duratec'. Interesting stuff , didn't know the mazda connection , just shows that badges can hide all sorts of things !

    Coolant

So are some not suited to car engines or do they all do the same thing ?

How many anti freeze variants are there ? Bought a 20L can from my local garage , think its Morris anti freeze , thought the ingredients were the same as other makes ?
  5. Any power registering at the starter motor with the meter ?

    Which engine?

Quoting ruff seven: Duratec,210 bhp ish Tend to agree with this , nice light engine , lots of power , very efficient , low emissions , had a word about this with Nick Potter and he says they are very reasonable to buy , relatively cheap parts and good availability. My engine is old tech compared to a duratec !

    Coolant

I put normal car anti freeze in , seems to work fine as long as the water/anti frreze mix is strong enough .

    MBE 967EF ecu

Thanks for that , its a long time on the rr'd for Troy and the 7. Taking mine down sat morning early so thay have it there for Tues when its booked in , hope I get a few more bhp and torque !

    MBE 967EF ecu

Alan , look forward to hearing how you get on and that it doesn't take too long on the rr as we know its ££'s !

    MBE 967EF ecu

Just had this fix on my now TB set up which has just been converted from carbs and she won't run properly as ecu is overfueling etc compared to engine tune so booked in to Northants ms/Troy . Wondering if its a big job to get it rr'd and what she will be like to drive ?
  11. Mudflaps are a very good idea if you live in a mucky area of horses/folks carting muck/single track roads meaning getting mucky again - hate muck on my little 7 !
  12. I've had solid lifters for three years now and am nearly getting used to that nice chatter above 3k revs - on cam !
  13. Sounds like valve gear needs adjustment , get in touch with the local 7 club they should know someone local .
  14. Lots of choice , most autoshops have various sizes , got mine from Halfords , its well worth getting one as normal car drivers may not see the little brake lights in time !
  15. Dodging holes in the road in the 4wd , 7 , and z4mc to avoid damage , and after a nother horrible winter there are even more of them .. holes introad !
  16. 3 x 7's , a red one parked outside , a yellow one as I walked in , and my Hpc on the right , nearly done !
  17. Jenveys going on my vx too , will snip bonnet with cutters to allow for different angle and foam filter.
  18. Quoting Willie.: Am I the only one shallow enough to not want roll cage padding because it makes the car look like a dogs dinner? I'd like to see the tintops some of you boys drive... Do you replace side windows with foam and wrap all passenger's heads in bubble wrap? I've just sold my current "tintop", a 1979 MG Midget, no roll cage, roll bar, air bags or anything. There was a big bolt head for the hinge of the hood frame right at my head, that I often bashed just in normal driving. Reading this thread it's a wonder some folks don't sleep in nomex pijamas, as if we're sticking to statistics, theory and risk assessments, then: "In the UK annually there are approximatley 500 fire-related deaths. The majority of these occur within the home between 12am and 6am when people are asleep. There are about 59,0001 house fires a year in the UK" I appreciate it's different for everyone, and especially so for racers, but I believe the original poster was looking for "real world" answers, so I'm just balancing the argument up Willie p.s. Statistics on fire came from http://www.firstalert.eu; how on earth did they manage to round up to "about 59,0001" p.p.s. Ye'r all a bunch of ninnys 😬 I did think similar thoughts too , but classic sports cars didn't allow for H & S did they , I did have a Tvr wedge soft top !
  19. Not much clearance , depends on your height and height of seat from floor , may well get my seats lowered as I hardly ever use a helmet ! Edited by - combine on 3 Jan 2013 09:32:32
  20. A stupid motorbike one bolted to the side mount of the brooklands rail. Dreadful to replace the tax disc as there are at least six nuts and bolts to completely undo !
  21. Tried this with my tvr seac silencer but its very difficult to seal it properly ! Invested in a completely new system for my vx from Joe Ellis and am well pleased , much bigger bore too.
  22. A lotter revs for a crossflow !
  23. Might be worth sitting in someones tillet seat cat 7 just to find out wether you like them , they are fantastic for feeling the back wheels sliding and there's no chance of sloping about at all in them , a bit hard caore but then so is a 7 !
  24. Quoting Paul Deslandes: your location tab suggests that you have 235bhp which has to mean, if the figure is right, that you already have flowed and ported head and inlet manifold plus some reasonably serious cams. The benefit of TBs versus carbs is that they can be correctly mapped everywhere across the rev and power range, whereas with carbs this is almost impossible to achieve. Have a look at this old CCC article to see what I mean. If you don't already have 3D mapped ignition, its introduction will make the car a great deal more drivable and generally smoother. If you haven't already, ditch the dizzy and go wasted spark. As has been said, the headline bhp figure is only an indicator. Its the low and mid range torque increase that you'll really notice and will keep you smiling every time you put your foot down. Very accurate stuff , I will miss the carbs though , the shunting in 3rd , the sudden acceleration after hesitation etc Edited by - combine on 17 Dec 2012 17:45:22
