  1. Interesting -- I had no idea what a "pillar drill" was until I clicked on the photo link. It is what we in the USA call a "drill press." Curious as to how (and why) the names diverged....? Alaskossie
  2. I just wish the "grain" or pattern of the carbon fibre weave in the Millwoods ran the same direction as the c/f on the CC rear wings..... Or is that too much to ask?? Alaskossie
  3. I don't know what a "porky" or a "porkie" is, but Fiberglas™ is a registered trademark of the Owens Corning Co. in USA (note precise spelling). Alaskossie
  4. "Stillson" was the name of an American manufacturer/designer of this type of adjustable pipe wrench. I don't know if they are still in business. Then, what about "modine" as an interchangeable word for "oil cooler" (usually a type of oil/air cooler)? Modine is actually the brand name of a particular US manufacturer of these and other types of oil coolers. Alaskossie
  5. OK then fair enough. But what do you Brits call a hose clamp that is NOT manufactured by L. Robinson & Co. (Gillingham) Ltd?? Alaskossie
  6. I've a question from across the pond, that I have often wondered about: Where does the British term "jubilee clip" come from, anyway? On this side of the water we call it simply a "hose clamp," because that is what it is. Alaskossie
  7. Nigel, Who makes your dry sump tank? It looks a bit like the Brise front-mounted tank, but with angles and corners where the Brise is rounded.... Is this a CC-supplied part? Alaskossie
  8. What does mounting the front Avons "bass-ackwards" do for their wet-road grip and performance? Seem like it would degrade the tyre's water-shedding properties considerably.... Alaskossie
  9. Vince, Does that hold true for left-hand-drive R400 chassis also? Alaskossie
  10. How does this amputation affect the heat-treatment of the input shaft? I am using a spacer on the Titan bell housing to avoid having to cut the shaft (which I was advised was a bad idea due to the heat-treating issue). Alaskossie

How about a "Seven-ish" Dax Rush 4X4 and Quaife 6-speed 4WD sequential gearbox, for that 3.0 Hartley with supercharger? Alaskossie
  12. Why do Caterham continue to only offer their rear wings (in either fiberglass or carbon fiber) only in the version with the notch cut out of the lower leading edge of the left side (nearside) for a possible rear-exit exhaust pipe? Is this tradition, habit, or just inertia? Surely this is a vestigial remnant akin to the human appendix, now that many Caterhams have a side-exit exhaust -- and with the new Duratec and Sigma engines, an exhaust system that is located on the opposite side of the car entirely. Do any independent wing suppliers offer a version of the nearside rear wing without this notch, but otherwise identical in shape and width to the factory offering? Alaskossie
  13. Simon, Then I assume its function is not so much a possible "ram effect," but instead as an intake noise reducer to meet some track regulations? I would think a reduction in power might still result... Alaskossie
  14. Is anyone aware of measured power comparisons of the new Caterham R500 2-litre Duratec with and without CC's new carbon fiber airbox? I would be interested to learn if there is a discernable power loss with the 'box mounted. Alaskossie
  15. Ammo, what octane grade of petrol was use when you ran the dyno test on this engine? Is this engine suitable for race fuel only? Whatever was used, I assume it is the RON method of measuring, rather than the (R+N)/2 method common in the States? Alaskossie
  16. I was not intending to use that much tension on the screws... The welting will provide a nearly continuous bearing surface under the protector.... Alaskossie
  17. I have a set of Millwoods that I will be installing on CC carbon fibre rear wings. (Unfortunately the direction of the cf weave does not match between protector and wing!). I am going to install mine with the rubber beading around the edges (except where wing and protector meet the body), and with small black stainless steel button-head cap screws and nuts spaced around in the same intervals as the standard CC wing protector. I decided not to bond the protector to the wing, to make disassembly easier for eventual re-painting (clearcoat), etc. Alaskossie
  18. I seem to recall that the standard (or "performance") CC rear ratio for the 6-speed was 3.9:1, while 3.62:1 was what CC calls their "touring" option. I do know that the 3.38:1 ("super-touring"?) ratio that Alex Wong and I have opted for is a special-order item at considerable extra cost..... (and by some accounts, difficult to find). There is also a very scarce 3.14:1 rear ratio built for the Sierra differential -- the "super-duper touring" option, perhaps?? Alaskossie
  19. In my Seven build (in progress, slowly), I wanted to avoid drilling in the cf dash panel for a power socket. I have bought two Sutars (Swedish) surface-mount 12v power sockets, and am mounting them downside-up to a rectangular aluminium panel that will be mounted horizontally under the center of the dash, affixed with cable ties at its leading edge to the concealed frame crossmember at the bottom edge of the dash. I plan to have one always-on "live" socket, and one ignition-keyed "on" socket for the Valentine radar detector. Both will be fused with in-line fuses. We'll see if they meet expectations. Alaskossie
  20. Does anyone know the proper distance from the front of the cycle wing to the leading edge of the wing stay, for the 15-inch wheel? Any difference from the measurement for a 13-inch wheel? TIA. Alaskossie
  21. Complete details for attaching the panoramic mirror with its clips are provided in the mirrorsforsevens website. Alaskossie
  22. After seeing a couple of Sevens at the American Lotus Owners' Group gathering last summer, with c/f noses and wings that were dull, chalky, spotted, and very difficult to clean up (caused by a combination of moisture and sunlight on bare c/f), I decided to take my new c/f wings to an auto body shop for professional clear-coating. The Seven is not yet on the road (engine install next month!), but the wings look fantastic -- glossy, and very three-dimensional. Bare c/f drinks up clear lacquer like a skid-row bum; the shop told me it took six quarts of Sikkens lacquer, and four coats each, to do the four wings. The c/f remains porous after the first one or two coats, and little pinholes appear, like dust specks, so the wings have to be sanded and then coated again. I also had pickup-truck bed-liner lightly sprayed on the underside of the wings, which should minimize evidence of thrown stones from appearing on the outside. Alaskossie
  23. Mine is also a recent Caterham, and the brake line definitely goes under the rear crossmember. I don't like the looks of the brake line lying on top of the square tube, with a panel to be riveted tightly over it. Looks like an open invitation for a severe crimp..... Alaskossie
  24. brunel, You have neglected to mention the cupholders, and most important -- the automatic parallel-parking option. Alaskossie
  25. I'm still in the build process (2007 Caterham Classic/Duratec 2.3) but I have removed the scuttle battery tray and binned the CC-supplied battery. I now have an Odyssey dry cell mounted down low, in front of the driver's footwell (on the intake, lhd side) in an aluminium bracket bought from Summit Racing, a USA parts supplier. I will install remote pos and neg terminals and a battery cutoff switch in front of the scuttle, so I can charge or check the battery easily without having to get under the intake manifold to remove it. Hope it all works as planned.... Alaskossie
