After seeing a couple of Sevens at the American Lotus Owners' Group gathering last summer, with c/f noses and wings that were dull, chalky, spotted, and very difficult to clean up (caused by a combination of moisture and sunlight on bare c/f), I decided to take my new c/f wings to an auto body shop for professional clear-coating.
The Seven is not yet on the road (engine install next month!), but the wings look fantastic -- glossy, and very three-dimensional. Bare c/f drinks up clear lacquer like a skid-row bum; the shop told me it took six quarts of Sikkens lacquer, and four coats each, to do the four wings. The c/f remains porous after the first one or two coats, and little pinholes appear, like dust specks, so the wings have to be sanded and then coated again.
I also had pickup-truck bed-liner lightly sprayed on the underside of the wings, which should minimize evidence of thrown stones from appearing on the outside.
