  1. It sounds a bit mixed to me, but 160BHP is certainly a good amount of power to have in a Caterham! I hope you get it all sorted.
  2. I'm really pleased with my Skyrich 15Ah Lithium battery, which only cost £150 ish from memory. Mind you, with no immobiliser on my trusty XFlow I don't have a problem leaving it for weeks anyway. An isolator switch might be good on a more modern car, but the weight saving per £ is unbeatable.
  3. Confidence helps as any nervousness tends to loosen your grip, hence the flying projectiles!
  4. My Skyrich YTX20 has twice the capacity and was only £144. It's been flawless has has to be one of the best value weight saving by miles. The Liteblox looks really expensive in comparison.
  5. RTV silicone really is great for exhausts. It's compliance is very useful as it accommodates expansion.
  6. I would use a smartphone to photograph under the dash and to make sense of everything. The gauge is clamped to the dash using a U shaped bracket and two ribbed finger nuts. If you undo the nuts, you can then pull the gauge out of the dash. There should be a white connector which you can then pull off. The remaining pair of wires go to the bulb holder, which is a bayonnet fitting in the back of the gauge. Twist and pull to get it out. Refitting is reversal of removal.
  7. Burton? http://www.burtonpower.com/parts-by-category/engine-components/flywheels-bolts-ring-gears/flywheels.html?
  8. If the gearbox is out then a check cum service by a reputable specialist is probably a good investment.
  9. Torqueing the flywheel bolts correctly is critical, and I would challenge anyone to do it reliably in situ.
  10. I don't have any specific knowledge of the 6 speed box, but I do know that things manufactured in low volumes (by which I mean <1000 PA) may suffer from 'infant mortality' problems. As the Caterham 6 speed box isn't known to wear badly, an old box is probably a good idea. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
  11. Caterhams can be tuned quite effectively using tyre pressures and also using rake. Raising the rear ride height should help as it raises the rear C of G relative to the roll center, promoting weight transfer at the rear.
  12. In my experience with my old TVR, the problem with the LSD was that when one rear wheel loses grip the tyre that grips is trying to rotate the car is the drive force is now off center. This was very scary in the snow.....
  13. My XFlow is now producing 155 BHP which is definitely in the 'living on borrowed time' territory for my old Ital axle. I have plans for even more power.....
  14. Just because you can get oil out of the 'dry' sump on an oil change, doesn't mean the scavenge pump has inadequate capacity. Firstly, the scavenge pump doesn't empty the dry sump, it merely pumps to the point where the mix of oil and air drawn in balances the flow of the pressure pump. Secondly, when the engine is stopped oil drains back from the tank to the sump through the scavenge pump.
  15. I can't say that in 100,000+ miles of road driving I ever felt the need for an LSD. I've got one now, but that's to handle more power.
  16. Oil pumps don't see much wear, and mine was deemed fine by Titan with 100,000 road miles on it.
  17. A perennial gripe of Seven ownership is a lack of creature comforts. I'm not looking for GT levels of luxury, but not taking the car out on a lovely summer day because of cockpit heat is not ideal. I made a custom heater/blower a while back and I'm trying to upgrade it with more powerful fans. I'll post more as the project progresses, but here's a photo of the frame with its new flap motorisation. The fans bolt either side and suck air from the footwells. From the main body the air is then either expelled through the bonnet if you want cooling (flap position as per photo) or blows through the heater matrix and comes out under the dash.
  18. If it's a cable driven speedo, then it's the cable.
  19. Mine's always had nuts and bolts. Handy when you want to remove the scuttle.
  20. No, not a direct fit, but pretty straightforward once you come to terms with having to make an adapter block.
  21. I'm having some success with fans that draw air out of the footwells and pump it out of the louvres in the bonnet. This is basically the reverse flow to the Caterham 'fresh air' heater. I've also come to the conclusion that a lot of the heat is being generated by the gearbox as there wasn't nearly as much of a problem with the 4 speed box. Attempts to cool the gearbox and tunnel have so far been a complete failure.
  22. The main problem with plenums is getting them big enough. They should have a volume of at least 7 times the swept volume on the engine, which means 14 liters.
  23. Crickey, it was so many years ago I can't remember where I got the calipers from. I got a local machine shop to mill some adapters to match the mounting lugs to the uprights.
  24. It should presumably pass the 0.2% MOT limit, so it's well out of spec. The catalyst is probably not working.
