  1. I was wondering if your repairs featured continuous contact. The breather repair does get liquid petrol touching it, but not constantly. Occasional sloshing. The data sheet on Alex's link does say a shelf life of three years. Mine is older than that, so we'll see. ISTR mine is the "rapid" variety... Is that what you mean ?
  2. Uncle Fester, I too have used Araldite to cover some tiny holes high up on a bell tank housing wall (external). 7 years later and all is well. My latest one is on the joint of a filler neck breather pipe... Put some on to seal a crack as I was bit desperate, what with having a track day the next day... So far so good, but I'll keep a close eye on things... The worst that should happen is that the smell of petrol on hard left handers with a full-ish tank will return... Or the glue gets into the petrol and bad things happen. Perhaps I should get a new filler neck after all. Nick Edited by - Nick Green on 22 May 2007 15:53:25
  3. Is Araldite resistant to petrol ?

    Leda

For those with Leda dampers, who became aware last month that they'd gone into liquidation, it looks like they are on the way back. See here
  5. Count the nipples ? 1 = standard, 2 = big. Or remove the pads and count the pistons, or "pots" hence 4-pots for the big brakes.
  6. Phil, I presume here, that the cat has 4 inputs and one out ? If so, it sounds like the SLR exhaust... A pic would be needed to clarify. Shouldn't be any big deal if it is a non-Caterham exhaust system. Assuming the above: 1. A 4-2-1 is supposed to fill in a mid range power curve dip on a K. Not sure how good the SLR version of the 4-2-1 is in this respect, but it is not making things worse. 2. Maybe 20 mins the first couple of times. If no exhaust sealant has been used it should be pretty easy. 3. Shouldn't be. The condition of the silencer is more critical. 4. Can't say I've ever noticed when I've run my 7 catted or decatted. A cat runs hot anyway and retains its heat for longer afterwards, but is a legal requirement for road use. I think heat shields are available for the cat can. Best check with Caterham. 5. Don't really know what you mean by this question... Having the cat supplied is very useful as they are not cheap. There are many 7s running with non-Caterham supplied exhausts.
  7. Thought I'd update... Since I first started this thread, I sent my V5C off along with a request to put more appropriate wording in. Even suggested a suitable alternative wording, and included a photocopy of the original V5 as an extra hint. Got the updated V5C back today. Section 3 now reads: "Declared New in GB by Independent Importer" Didn't know Kent was abroad. Going to try again. I wonder what I'll get next time A government agency in charge of a large database; I don't hold out much hope for ID cards. Thankfully.
  8. One or two points: The 50mm clearance thing is not an MSA requirement for sprinting in road-going cars. Advisable, of course. The previous owner of Gambo's car, for instance, used to sprint it with the standard (non-FIA) roll bar in non L7C events. A Lotus 6 turns up to some of my local events and that has no roll bar at all. Rather him than me, but it is a road-going car competing in a road-going class, so no problem as far as local regs are concerned. I have no problem with the L7C's insistence on a FIA rollbar minimum, mind; seems sensible to me. The L7C might be insistent on the 50mm clearance for its events, though. That is their prerogative. I've got an FIA battery switch that was wired (by Caterham) not to switch the lights or immobiliser off. It does the kill the engine and prevent its restart though. In 7 years of sprinting, no scrutineer has ever asked to test it. It is not a required item anyway, so not much they could do. If doing actual racing, then the FIA switch and rollbar clearance becomes an issue. No requirement for tow point stickers either; that is a racing thing too. The Ignition off label could be done by using a piece of masking tape stuck on the dash above the key, with a clear arrow showing direction of turn, along with the word "Off". We aren't talking F1 here. Just trying to back up views here and on the other thread, that you can sprint, at least in non L7C events, in a practically standard car, to see if you like it: timing strut, yellow marking on battery earth lead, catch tank if necessary (no open-to-the-road breathers anyway), Ignition off label, car numbers, and away you go. Don't need to convert to an aeroscreen either. (Maybe the extra head restraint with Tillets...) Noise: IME, this is more relaxed for sprints than TDs. Eg: Castle Combe has a 100dBA limit for TDs. For sprints there, the limit is 105dBA, maybe 108. Proban overalls, ok for sprints, cost from about 75 quid or something. For a lid, I went to a motorbike dealer. Started at the 50 quid helmets (my priorities were different then) and eventually found one at 150 quid that fitted me properly. I've been competing, but not very competitively, for 7 years now. While it can be frustrating at times, I still look forward to sprints and I would say I enjoy them more than TDs, on the whole. Ultimately it comes down to "Does it take your fancy ?" If not, fair enough. It's a bit like trying to explain to a non-believer just what the point of a 7 is. Thanks for reading this far if you still are Edited by - Nick Green on 14 Nov 2006 13:34:35 Edited by - Nick Green on 14 Nov 2006 13:35:21
  9. Mark, YHM regarding QR boss and shaft. Nick.
  10. Are all the Caterham supplied AP 4-pot calipers classed as "race" ?
  11. Might know who this is... I'll just try and wake him up...
  12. Angus, Pretty sure the first one is what I use with the more modern laptop I have, to play with the Emerald. It is a lead convertor, and I got it from Maplin... Works fine, anyway. Edited by - Nick Green on 3 Nov 2006 10:10:58
  13. Neil, Here's one place: http://www.auto-tools.co.uk/s.php?m=s&s=1&t=inhex Give swift service, IME.
  14. Tony, Perhaps I'd better clarify the manifold type I have, which I didn't do earlier: I've got the 4-1 where all four primaries exit the side of the car and go to an external collector. Assuming we are talking of the same thing, and I can help, give me a yell closer to the date. N.
  15. What manifold does your car have ? I have a catted silencer adapted to go on a 4-1 Caterham manifold on my K-engined car.
  16. Thanks for responding. Alan, was your car factory-built ? Mike, is your's a Q-plate ? Graham, the letter I got back from DVLA said they would be changing the wording in a year or so, or something, but that was a couple of years ago now... I'm thinking a gee-up is in order. Does anyone have a wording that implies it is built from new parts ?
  17. Could someone who has recently registered their car and received a V5C have a shufty at it and tell me what it says in Section 3 - Special Notes, on the front page, please. Mine says Kit Built/Converted - Assembled from parts all of which may not be new. Leaving aside the suspect (to my eyes at least) grammar, this contrasts with the wording on my original V5: Kit - Built from new parts. There was some discussion about this on here a couple of years ago, and I sent a letter to the DVLA. They sent me a reply to the effect of "Computer says no", when I asked for more appropriate wording on the V5C. Just wondering what they are writing these days... Cheers! 18. Is the dwindledot (IIRC) forum still going ? That is/was Sylva oriented, isn't it ?
  19. Stu, I have standard (150?) front springs and the progressive rears off a '99 non-SLR( but I don't think there was any difference) pretty much to hand. The dampers the rear springs were fitted to, were the under-DDT variety. Any use ?
  20. Perhaps an outfit like this: http://www.tyresave.co.uk/alloyskn.html or Demon Tweeks could help ? Surprised there is any difference between the plastic caps for 13" and 14" wheels!
  21. Do Caterham not sell them ? Along with the stick-on centre badges ?
  22. And don't forget to switch on Closed Loop. 3% swing, IIRC.
  23. Can you not hook up a laptop to the Emerald and lean out the fuel at the appropriate point on the Live Adjustments screen, while the test is taking place ? Ok, I was beaten to it... Might also be worth driving it on the resulting setting afterwards; you might not notice any difference... If it was anything like my plenummed K, only load site 1 was affected...
