  1. My temperature gauge has started reading really high for coolant. It's wired up to also read the oil temperature when I flick a switch on the dashboard but the oil temperature is still fairly normal. Before when I started the car from cold the gauge read ~40 degrees for both coolant and oil and for normal driving it read ~80 degrees. Now when I start the car from cold the gauge reads ~80 degrees for coolant and ~40 degrees for oil and for normal driving it reads ~120 degrees for coolant (in the red) and ~80 degrees for oil. I haven't done any hard driving since I noticed the problem. Coolant levels are fine, no leaks. I don't think it's the gauge since oil temperatures are fine. The fan still comes on when it should (although I didn't pay much attention to it before so could be wrong here), so probably not the coolant temperature sender (am I correct in assuming the fan triggers off the same sender?). No other problems, the other gauges all read fine, the car feels/sounds the same and there's no obvious steam or water escaping anywhere. Anyone have any ideas? Don't have much idea how it all works myself, but if someone gives me clear and simple instructions on what to check and fix, I reckon I could manage (and hopefully learn something). It's a VVC Roadsport SV by the way. Cheers, Phil.
  2. Spotted a grey 7 on the road between Radwinter and Ashdon over the weekend. Funny because it was only a couple of miles from where I live and I also have a grey SV. Before I got a better look, I even thought someone might have "borrowed" mine. Haven't seen it before, so I'm assuming it's either a new purchase or on a visit. Cheers, Phil.
  3. We have six pedigree Cairn Terrier puppies that will be seven weeks old tomorrow looking for a good home in about a weeks time. There's four girls (one grey, one red/brown, one grey/black, one cream) and two boys (both black/grey but one quite dark). Three of the girls are £550 and the boys £500. The remaining girl will be free/cheap to a good home. She can't have puppies without surgery so would suite someone who was going to have her spayed. Also she's currently recovering from a grass seed in her eye, so worst case is that she's blind in one eye, but we won't know for a week or so. She's been checked out by a vet and is otherwise healthy. She'll probably be free if the eye doesn't recover or she doesn't sell, otherwise ~£200. All puppies have been raised in the home and are very happy playing with children. The mother is quiet (as far as terriers go) and is a family pet. The price includes kennel club registration, but not first vaccinations. PM me for a phone number if interested. We live near the Essex/Cambridgeshire border and the puppies can be viewed this weekend. Cheers, Phil Spencer.
  4. I've ordered a Shift-I unit for my car ('02 Roadsport 160 SV with standard dash/dials) and wondered if anyone had any advice about fitting it, bearing in mind that I'm fairly clueless. Plan to do this next weekend assuming the weather holds up. Looks like there's only three wires - any idea what I connect these to? The webpage doesn't have any info for Caterhams - assume I need to find three wires from the mass of spagetti under the dash and solder the appropriate Shift-I wires to them but how do I locate these wires? I guess I also need to get the wires from behind the windscreen to under the dash and was hoping to use the hole that must already be there for the wires to the heated windscreen. Is it quite easy to loosen the windscreen to do this? Any advice would be most welcome. Cheers, Phil.

    Respray?

Totally biassed (he's my father) plug if you're near Yorkshire - Hugh Spencer in Baildon. Does loads of classic stuff and will be doing me a bonnet stripe if I can get the car up there this summer. Cheers, Phil.

  7. Passing through (in a yellow SV) yesterday evening at about 8ish and saw one parked just off the highstreet. Cheers, Phil.
  8. That was me. Caterham gave me the car since mines not ready yet. Look out for a grey SV around Saffron Walden in a week or two. Going to be using it as a daily drive until winter. Cheers, Phil.
  9. Anyone tried these - Carbon Bits do them and I'm sure there are others. It's sort of a carbon fibre cylinder that fits over the silencer and there's some type of insulation between the silencer and the carbon. My kids (fairly young and not gifted with too much common sense yet) are going to have to get in and out occasionally and I wouldn't mind reducing the external silencer temperature a bit. Eventually one them's going to get a burn if I don't do anything. Do these guards work at reducing temperatures? Any problems with power reduction or the engine overheating? How are they to fit & what's the quality like? Cheers, Phil.
  10. Thanks for the response. Loads of useful advice. The question about value was because the car is a little over budget, and the seller suggested that they might knock a little off if I didn't take the cat bypass pipe. Cheers, Phil Spencer.
  11. Currently looking at a car with a Caterham sourced 4-1 exhaust. The cat's been removed and replaced with a section that makes it a 4-2-1 decat exhaust. The cat comes with the car and can be swapped in for MOT. I have a few questions: 1. Any power or torque benefit with this setup? Anyone got any quantifiable evidence? 2. Is it really as easy as it sounds to change over for the MOT (was told it was a 5min job)? 3. Any difference in sound? Will it be too loud for most trackdays without the cat? 4. Does the silencer get any hotter without the cat? I have kids and I'm a little worried about burns - don't want to increase the risk. 5. What difference does this set up make to the value of the car? Exhaust looks in good condition and done ~12k miles. Cheers, PhilS.
  12. Agreed. I've seen Dizz's and it is very nice. If it had a 6-speed box it would just what I'm looking for. Can't quite run to the cost of his car & a 6-speed box. Unless anyone knows of a box going cheap of course. Also the cash now won't be freed up until towards the end of next week, but I'm still looking.
  13. Nice car, but no LSD, no anti-cav & no uprated brakes. Also it's 21500, which is a little off budget. At that price, if it had everything I wanted, I might just be able to stretch after negotiation with the other half, but I'd want to upgrade it straight away and that would cause trouble.
  14. I'm looking to buy a Caterham SV (either Roadsport or Superlight). Must have the following kit (or if missing, the upgrade cost needs to be figured into my budget): At least 160bhp, so probably the VVC K-series 6-Speed box Anti-cav or dry-sump Track-day roll bar Q/R Steering wheel Harness Full weather gear & heater Superlight wheels (would prefer 13" but 15" OK) LSD The following kit isn't quite must-have, but still very important: Front brake upgrade Black pack And here's the stuff I'd like, but probably won't get most of it: Start button Fire extinguisher Carbon cycle wings Carbon dash Stack display Spare wheel Aero filler cap I'm on a budget of ~£20k and have the cash waiting (well I will have in the next 3-4 days) for the right car. Idealy I'd like to buy something in the next week or two. Colour is not too important as long as it's not too daft (no bright pink or day-glow green), but prefer something bright or metalic and I do like stripes. If anyone's got anything for sale that fits the criteria, let me know. Cheers, PhilS.
