  1. Just a minor issue but on the old site you could click on a member's name in a post and see where they are located (if they have put that info in their profile). Useful if they are selling/buying or needing assistance. Avoids the need for the 'Where are you located?' post. Unless I am missing it the location does not show now
  2. I had exactly that issue with braided fuel hose on my Mini. The fuel leak was big, luckily just outside the garage after waking it up from it's winter hibernation. All replaced with plain rubber fuel pipe Graham, are you saying that the fuel pipe through the tunnel is also rubber pipe? I know it would introduce more joints but I would think metal fuel pipe would be better there
  3. It doesn't have any vacuum advance and the base plate is locked with no movement as far as I can see. The base plate will be locked/solid because you don't have any vacuum advance. The centrifugal advance moves the bit of the shaft with the points cams in relation to the gear that engages with the camshaft
  4. Well apparently A1 was the first registration issued - in 1903, so yes VERY early
  5. "could be the immediate answer to the no sparks issue!" I am sure they could Graham. Bit of a trek from Epsom but I would imagine that after talking to them you could parcel it up and send to them for testing and repair
  6. The Lumenition I have in my Xflow just replaces the points and condenser in the distributor. The advance is still controlled by the springs and weights in the distributor - different springs are available to vary the rate of advance. Max advance is determined by what is built in (usually marked somewhere on the cam piece which is what the weights and springs move). Might also be worth giving these people a call H&H Ignition Solutions I use one of their electronic ignition systems in my Mini and it has been good. As far as I know they are ex Lucas people who set up their own business
  7. I suppose one option is to ask the gauge manufacturer (I suspect at that age they will be Smiths rather than Caterham branded). Caerbont or Speedy cables should be able to tell you what a compatible sender will be 4 87 Date of manufacture?
  8. The UNF will seal against a fibre or copper washer against the head, the NPT taper thread will seal on the thread tightening in the hole
  9. Anthony, I assume you are replacing one that is suspect, is the thread on it parallel (that will be UNF) or tapered (NPT)
  10. From #178 "the bolt head should sit inside the ally bracket slightly" . The first photo in #185 does not show that, does that mean the work done by Caterham Midlands was done incorrectly?
  11. I would think Speedy Cables would be able to repair this. I think they are in the same building as the original manufacturer of your instrument. Caerbont don't seem to offer a repair service themselves Speedy Cables | Automotive Instrument Repair - Mechanical Cables
  12. The fibreglass bodywork is also a bit of a clue
  13. CATERHAM SERIES 5 - Check MOT history – GOV.UK (check-mot.service.gov.uk) This is the car in question. Slightly odd intervals between MOTs and the two where the mileage goes back are 6 months apart in the same year!!
  14. What was the seller's explanation? Do you have the reg number so we can have a look at the MOT history
  15. Have you managed to sort this yet? Edit: not a reply to #25, a question to the OP
  16. It would be easy to check which side is the feed, remove the fuses and see which side has 12V to earth. You could well have an earlier Lotus wiring loom, that had two fuses like your pic, I will scan that wiring diagram from Weale and send that as well.
  17. This is the 81-87 wiring diagram Graham. Hope it is legible enough for your purposes, if not PM me your email and I will send original scan Incidentally circuits with only two fuses used to be fairly normal (certainly on BMC cars). Early Minis had two, 30A I think, one for the permanently live circuits and one for the ignition switched ones. Later Minis changed to four fuses and when I rebuilt mine I changed it to eight fuses of various ratings
  18. #3, Graham, by fuses do you mean two things like this that plug into sockets on the bulkhead My wiring diagram is on page 51 of the Tony Weale book. Says the diagram is standard from '81 to '87
  19. Graham, I have one for my 1985 Caterham. Does your car have circuit breakers instead of fuses?
  20. #17 That does not quite add up for me. Are you saying the pressure drops significantly when depressing the clutch during a gear change?
  21. #10 you say "could it be a faulty sender" but higher up you say it is a mechanical gauge. There is no sender on a mechanical gauge, just a pipe connecting the gauge to the oil system
  22. Do you have an oil pressure warning light, does that come on?
  23. I take it you have four over centre clips as originally fitted to sevens. I had the same issue with an S2 I has some time ago (the bonnet once went backwards over my head). If you are not concerned about originality then I suggest fitting the spring latches to the front as current Caterhams and do what you can to make sure the rears have decent tension on them
