FAO Swan neck style induction people

Having spoken to PiperX technical they think a blank plate cut around the problem areas on the existing backplate is the way forward. They're going to email me tonight to that effect, I'll post that here. Still, I propose getting one of the blank plates sent out as a test, to see if it will fit properly when cut. Trouble is, I don't know where to start to find someone who could cut the plate to the correct spec *confused* Advice needed please chaps *smile*

If people didn't see my post on Techtalk - here it is, a third of the way down this page, complete with photos of my plate: here

Chris - that's the way I was thinking about doing it also *thumbup*

I've totally dissembled my swan neck TBs, and the issue seems to be two-fold:

1. The trumpets are a pressed fit into the backplate, therefore difficult to use alone;

2. The throttle linkage assembly pivots into the area normally taken by a flat backplate.

I've settled on a couple of ideas to solve the problem:

1. Cutting a very large hole in the new backplate effectively only leaving enough metal that becomes similar to the original metal plate stuck to the foam filter, screwed to the original backplate. There's a raised lip running all the way around the filter side of the backplate that may be an ideal mating point for the two backplates.

2. Cutting holes for the inlets and the throttle resess, enabling a substantial amount of the original backplate to be cut away, but leaving the cast recess.

Option 2 could be a more pukka job, but option 1 retains more airbox depth *thumbup* This would I think be the preffered method. I'm sure we could get a machine shop to cut a number of them if we decide on the best option?

Hi Franky

Please put me down for one. My 7 is a VHPD with swan neck tb's so I will need a backplate. The adaptation of the old bp looks the way to go. I would sooner have a professionally cut one. Any thoughts on who could do this??

Thanks

Chris/Nigel - I'm going to investigate with my work suppliers locally about having a big hole machine cut - I'm pretty convinced the way to go will be to cut a hole large enough to mate with the raised rim that locates the current ITG filter, then maybe drill and thread the backplate to secure the new backplate in position. I haven't looked in detail at the dimensions yet but it should be possible to have a definative solution by the time the backplates arrive.

Don't want to teach anyone to suck eggs, but there comes a time in a negotiation, where you make a decision on price and also take a call on which supplier is actually going to deliver the goods and give a good service, which is not always based on price 😬

Price is only one aspect, we have to actually get our hands on the goods *thumbup*

Fair point but they are both huge mail order specialists, so I can't imagine what the problems with delivery would be (if any?).

For those that have not read all the posts, the intention is that I supply the chosen retailer with the list of names and addresses, you then individually call them, confirm your details with them and pay, the product is then shipped.

I have spoken with Burton Power, they will simply take your address and payment details then instruct Pipercross to deliver a kit direct to you.

The Pipercross Shop are on the same industrial estate as the Pipercross factory.

They would want to see all the oders placed before placing the order with Pipercross.

Deliveries should then be dispatched approximately one week from them placing the 30+ orders to Pipercross.

The airboxes are made to order and are not stock items.

Jees, things happen fast round here *wink*

Pipercross have just confirmed that;

You would be looking at a weeks lead time for 30 air boxes to be made and packed, sending to individual addresses would be fine.

So it appears that whoever offers the cheapest price gets the order 🤔

Agree with Dave Jackson, go with Burton. Still haven't had the blasted email from PiperX surprisingly though!

Stu, re the backplate design, option 1 sounds good. If we could get all the backplates for the people with KV6 induction delivered to one machine shop and get them cut to one design, it would save hassle for many (including me 😬) *thumbup*
