Andy Doughty
Any one have a good contact to refurbish my diff ?The bearing on the output shaft has got play in it. I've had a little tweek of the bearing housing but as it's done 80k miles I guess it needs a little love.I'm in the North so local might be nice but not essential.cheers
Dan R
I would try Steve perks at SPC. His knowledge of differentials, (And from experience SIerra diffs) is second to none, as is his workmanship. Steve Perks - SPC
7 wonders of the world
Steve will make a cracking job of any final drive, while its there why not get him to pop one of his Tracsport LSD's in there too
ECR
He would be my first port of call as well...
Area Representative paul richards Posted September 17, 2023 Area Representative Share Posted September 17, 2023 I have also used Steve Perks but some time ago I had a LSD rebuilt by Geartorque in Westhoughton http://www.geartorque.co.uk/services.php
Andy Doughty
Thanks for all the suggestions.I'll start ringing around for prices and turn around times.I'm going to be busy this winter. Engine and gearbox out for what appears to be a gearbox oil seal failure with transmission oil dripping out of the bell housing and now the diff for a bearing failure. TomB
I spoke to Geartorque yesterday - his quote over the phone to rebuild my ZF LSD with new bearings etc was a rather astonishing £680+vat. I explained I wanted a check over & refresh, new bearing etc, and he suggesting Id be wasting my money if its not excessively noisy. I also spoke to Alan Voights in Wallasey, Merseyside and they quoted £355+vat for the same with a week turnaround. That would be a clean, check, bearings and reassemble like for like, keeping the internals and CWP the same.
Area Representative gileshudson Posted September 20, 2023 Area Representative Share Posted September 20, 2023 Talk to Phil at FST Engineering (formerly Road and Race Transmissions), though you'd have to ship it as he's darn sarf...
Mechanical Moz
I had a Quaife ATB fitted and diff rebuild by Alan Voights. Very happy with their service.
SM25T
#8 ..... what is the new name FST ?
Area Representative gileshudson Posted September 21, 2023 Area Representative Share Posted September 21, 2023 As you were Ian, I think it's maybe just their newish (~2020) root company name, rather than their trading name as the website and everything is still all unchanged from Road and Race Transmissions. Tom_Arundel
When you say `play in the output shaft bearing` is it the bearing or the shaft (spline) that moves and which side (drivers or passenger)? I ask as the crown wheel meshing is determined by the preload in these bearings and you need to tighten the correct side (if you do) The drive shafts usually have some play in the spline so waggling the shaft may not be bearing play.Just saying
Andy Doughty
Thanks Tom,Sorry for the slow reply as I've been off line for a few days.I guess play on the spline may be an option that I hadn't considered. I haven't seen a drawing of the break down of components so don't know the assembly. its the right hand side ( drivers side in UK) and it the complete I'll take that drive shaft off and check for wear as a first step. Thanks
