DIY Servicing

Sinbad

Recommended Posts

With the demise of Caterham Midlands and the absence of any suitable local servicing agents I am thinking of carrying out some basic servicing routines on my vehicle.

I haven't even changed the engine oil on a vehicle for a couple of decades so this will be a learning experience for me.

Could anyone tell me if there is a servicing checklist for my vehicle and any general tips to get me started.

My car is a 2009, factory built, Roadsport 125 powered by a Ford Sigma engine.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for your reply.

The links you have referenced look very useful.

I have a garage and a few tools, and looking to purchase a trolley jack, axle stands and a torque wrench to begin with.

I haven't got an assembly guide so that would be useful.

I would be particularly interested in things like torque wrench settings for wheel nuts and spark plugs  for my specific vehicle.

Halfords do a good value troley jack not as pricey as the aluminium low entry one.

I just roll the car onto a couple of 1/2 inch thick pieces of wood & that lifts the car enough to get the jack under.

You will need a low level container to catch oil from the sump.

I use the bottom from the  hamster cage & is ideal.

RIP Acorn.

Hi John,

Yes, I did consider this, but Caterham Midlands was already far enough away from where I live (Halesowen) so I think I will have a dabble with the DIY servicing and consider Nick if I run into trouble or for more problematic items such as a cambelt change.

Thanks for the suggestion Roadsport06.

I actually live fairly close to Russ and meet up with him once a month.

He has someone who does his servicing, but again it's a bit further a field than I would like to go.

I should be seeing Russ this week so I will discuss it further with him then.
