  1. It would appear a hose popped off the turbo, so no BIG bill. Phew!!!!
  2. Saturday 21st April, Was it you....? Edited by - tigger on 22 Apr 2007 10:47:40
  3. Useful information.... I'll report back once I've got the car back from the garage
  4. The story continues Over the weekend I tow the 7 up to Snetterton. The journey up was somewhat hampered by some very large (and embarrassing) puffs of smoke and a noticable reduction in power, things got worse ont he way home, during a particularly slow overtaking manouvre on a truck there was a cluck from the engine and a massive reduction in power (a bit like the cam belt jumping a tooth). Anyway, the rest of the journey was a case of using all the gears to maintain 50,mph on the M'way, constant speed was a little less stressful than the start/stop traffic of London. Anyway I fear that there is a large bill coming at least a new turbo?!. Tim
  5. Thanks everyone for the feed back. The general sense which I get it that it's a case of TADTS. One thing I forgot to say is that I have run some injector cleaner through the system too and there was indeed a large amount of soot which eminated from the rear of the car. My thinking that it might be something else, possibly fuelling, is based on the lull in power just prior to the puff of smoke coinciding with the turbo coming in. Is there a air volume sensor or something which might affect fuelling?
  6. The car has done a reasonable 72,000 on a 2001 plate. An over fuelling does fit the bill, my next question what would be the cause and what is the likely cure and possible cost? Tim
  7. My Tintop tow car, a 2001 VW Passat TDi is Puffing a bit of smoke and what with the smoking ban coming in to force in June I think I better get it looked at... The symptoms are: Kind of grey/brown puff of smoke as 2500rpm often on a flat throttle but also under harder acceleration, at other RPM's 3500 and lower (say) 1800 RPM it seems pretty clean. The car pulls pretty strongly through most of the rev range but there does seem to be a bit of a cough/lull at the 2500 RPM which occurs before the puff of smoke appears from the exhaust. There is no excessive use of engine oil. Can anyone give some enlightenment as to what it might be....? Hopefully the mighty Blatchat can provide an answer. Tim
  8. bugger! just bought one exactly the same direct from Jill but I have to say it's superb. :)
  9. ptpt, I'm in Dulwich so not too far away from you, if you plan on tackling the cam belt yourself, and need a second pair of hands, please drop me a line. Tim
  10. In the next 6 months they may also be a video for Head Gasket replacement which might also be helpful. Tim
  11. You may find this interesting. A nice video of a K-series cam belt change and instruction how to time verniers. http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/engines/index.htm Where abouts in London are you....?
  12. That would have been me coming back from Silverstone, driving slowly enough to hit the CC after 6.00 :)
  13. Solved. Simple solution using impact technology. :)
  14. I've just tried to remove the cap on my belltank but having a bit of a problem. It turns and feels loose but won't come off..... Does anyone have any tips.
  15. I have just got a fantastic toneau from Soft bits with neat un-zippable half doors. I'm off to Silverstone on Monday for some high speed testing :o)

    Silverstone 12/3

Anyone go to Silverstone on Monday 12th March?
  17. Many thanks, I imagine it's a deep socket job.
  18. I've got a nice shiny new belt for my dry sump pump (purple) but when I went to fit it I couldn't work out how to release the tensioner pulley. There is a square head tensioning bolt but it's obviously locked somewhere and can't quite work out where, is it like the K-series cam belt tensioner where the centre nut/bolt keeps the pulley in place? Any advice warmly welcomed, pics even better. T
  19. Thanks for the offer, how many layers is the suit? I forgot to put in my original post that I wanted a 2 or 3 layers.
  20. If anyone has a second hand race suit for sale (preferably black/white) suitable for a 6', 12.5 stone driver I would be interested in hearing from you. Many thanks. Tig
  21. Thanks for the reply, it hadn't occurred to me that the number was the circumference. 815mm
  22. The time has come to change the dry sump pump belt so I contacted the Caterham factory and they advised me that they didn't have one in stock but gave me a belt number of 3PK814 (for the purple pump). I have just receive a shiny new belt from Redline but with a number of 3PK815, is there a really difference between the two and are they interchangeable....? Tig
  23. Thanks for the feedback: Cap replaced but I know that it is not unheard of for new caps to fail, will be worth another go.... A sniffer on the coolant would be a good idea but only happens at high load so a bit tricky but worth a go....! Plastic dowels - These were replaced with metal ones when the head was flowed (sorry forgot to give that info earlier). One thing I can say is that I'm glad I had an alarm fitted to the coolant tank, it saved me completely destroying things...... http://bg.mgcars.org.uk/index1.html?o=116628176731632
  24. I think I know what this means but I would like to confirm it with a higher authority first.... Yesterday at Brands I suffered coolant loss from the expansion cap (K-series car) and although the rivet inside it hadn't not popped I replaced it and went out for another session with the same result, a loss of coolant from the expansion cap. This only seems to happen when driving enthusiastically and not when idling. My suspicion is that exhaust gasses are passing the firing ring and pressurising the coolant system, but before I take the head off can anyone suggest any other less serious causes......? Tig
  25. JonP, Thanks for asking the question and thanks to others for an explaination which I can understand. Apologies for the semi-hijack but I'd like to ask the others where a 'Conning Tower' be purchased. Tig
