  1. Brent -- I would buy one!! particularly if you can make it up soon! regards, (or Jamesltanner@btinternet.com)...
  2. Peter T .... I am not in Dorking at the moment, so not around the corner from Leatherhead...I am in Mid-Sussex...If you would be willing to let me borrow the tool for a few weeks (SVA date is Feb 14th...so have to get it finished)..I would be much indebted. If you would be willing to send it to me by post, I assure you I will return it...if you feel this would work, please email me at jamesltanner@btinternet.com and I will give yo umy address. Thanks!!
  3. Thank you... my hacksaw was a non starter! Now I need to find Bob, with an angle grinder! No where to buy/obtain one already cut to the small size? Appreciate the help on such a small (but necessary!!) item.
  4. Does anyone know where I can buy or obtain a 3/8 inch cut down Allen Key for the Gear Box oil fill? Thank you in advance
  5. Hi everyone Just thought I would let you know that some insurance companies namely Bell Direct have recently started charging additional premiums for any optional extras fitted to your car. I have had my current car insured with them for 4 years and only after making a claim this year did they suddenly start charging for the fact my car had leather seats and xenon lights! When I called to investigate what would happen if I acquired a new car they informed that optional extras are not covered! In that case why are they charging an additional premium Be warned after a bad year for insurance companies I suspect there will be a lot more of this kind of behaviour. I will probably change insurer at renewal time.
  6. Neil and Bazza, thank you very much for your help! I will ask Sean for the correct part and mount it to either the starter motor bolt of the bell housing bolt. Sean knows me by now! Neil, I really like your build pics! I had a look through...I think it will prove helpful as I complete my work. Mine is also an '07 R400 in Lambo Orange. Mine is an SV however...How you got the engine in a normal one, I will never know!! very tight fit...I also decided to remove the alternator...no way without. To make things slightly trickier in the heat of the moment, I was lowering the engine and could not understand how the air intake would fit over the battery...CC had, unfortunately mounted my battery on the lower shelf, (where the ECU mounts),...anyway, removed that too! best regards....
  7. I am sorting out the Electrics on a R400 2.0litre build and the guide says attach the Black Earth lead to the outermost bolt of bell housing to engine (and then to battery). firtsly, I do not think I have the correct lead as the kit included 2 black leads, both short. One is attached to the chassis under the front left engine mounting block and than to the engine, via one of the bolts attaching the atlernator bracket to the engine. The other one is too short to make it from the Battery earth lead to just about anything. However, assuming I have can source the correct lead, which bolt would you suggest is "outermost"..some of the bolts attaching the bell housing to the engine are effectively "inset" so a lead would corrupt that set up, clearly not one of those. thanks in advance...making progress on the build!
  8. Paul, Thanks for your advice....if I ever take the engine in/out again (I am sure I will) I will have wheels an and try the Ramp tip. I did use a small jack as you suggested to lift the gearbox onto the cross member. Yes, your edit was correct...engine in and looks good!!! I could not believe how tight of a fit it was! As you read I had to remove the Alternator...which was the trick in the end...I'll put that back on after the hols. Everything in hibernation for a few weeks. Look forward to a return to the wacky world of seven building in a few weeks...I am sure the installation of the Diff/Prop will bring me back to Tech Talk! James
  9. Mic, don't know if you will receive this...but thank you so much. You do not know how timely your call to help was! I had to get the engine in tonight as I had to get the hoist back to the hire shop tomorrow as we are on the family Summer Hols first thing Friday!! Alternator off...engine in! Success! You would not believe another small probelm which I sorted....the battery was in the way of the intake manifold...why? Because it was mounted on the lower shelf, not the upper shelf!!! One for Catheram to sort in the post build check! Thanks again...
  10. Paul, To be totally honest, my name is James. My Brother-in-law, Charlie, built a Caterham about 4 years ago. I have taken delivery very recently and had some days to start the build right away. I have joined the club, sent cheque, etc, but have not received my membership, so Charlie, who swears by Tech Talk, has let me use his Password in the meantime. He lives in Boxhill, and still loves his Catherham. I am down there a lot and will take your details, as I would love to take you up on your offer of help or tools, if needed. I live in Mid sussex on the Ashdown Forest. Thanks very much for your offer!
  11. Mic, do you mean to release the belt prior to removing the alternator? There is a small nut in the middle of the bigger one on the front of the alternator, could you explain in a little more detail what I am to do? sorry to sound a novice, but I am! thanks
  12. Mic, thanks...can I reinstall the alternator with engine in? Given the situation as I descibed it, do you think this is the best solution, or is there another approach to getting the engine in? thanks
  13. Thank you very much for your help[>>>your photos were a huge help...I have also successfully uses ropes and bowline knots. Problem is I have not yet been successful with the install! not giving up yet! regards
  14. I assumed it was a tight fit, and it is! Nearly defeated, but not yet! I am sort of stuck. the engine is nearly in...Gearbox mount on front edge of its platform.problem is right back edge of engine/bell house are jammed up against the pedal box, and the engine is slightly crooked...gear tail too far right...at the front left, it is nearly impossible to lower the engine because the Alternator Pulley is interfereing with the front left cross member. One thought is to remove the Alternator Pulley, but I do not know how. If I turn the large nut on the front of the pulley, no surprise the belt and the pulley turn. If this suggestion works and gives me the clearance, how do I remove the pulley? And if I do, can I reinstall it and tighten the belt with the engine in? I and the engine really are stuck!!! the engine is the Caterham 2.0litre. Thanks for any thoughts....!
