  1. Nobody got any ideas then? ☹️ Trying to get out of the garage
  2. I have a non 7 starting problem which is serious 'cos it is stopping me getting the 7 out of the garage! My daughters (old) Renault 5 either starts perfectly on the button, or not at all. If it fires, it starts first time and continues to run well. When it doesn't start, it doesn't even fire. The problem seems to be a lack of a spark at the plug. The distributor cap, points, HT leads and battery all seem fine, so could this be an intermittent coil problem. If so, how do I test it, or should I just change the coil All suggestions greatefully received - It is stuck in front of the B*****y garage at the moment Trying to get out of the garage
  3. The Halfrauds does the job, is easily sourced and doesn't cost a fortune. I used to use Mobil 1 synthetic 5-40 on my xflow but this year changed to same but 15-40. Only difference seems to be better pressure when hot at low revs/tickover. And the engine is completely oil tight! Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  4. I have had the same problem two or three times both on the speedo and the tacho (1600XF - Caterham dials). I had them fixed by an instrument doctor, but at a price! (Ican find the contact no. if you want it). I promised myself that if they went again I would try to find an alternative which was more reliable. Has anyone out there had any experience of replacing speedos or tachos (other than with Stacks)? Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  5. Call GRL Carbs in Woking. 01483 725759. They should be able to help. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  6. I run K&N filters on my DCOE 40's, with the sparkproof mesh. I have had a couple of 'blowbacks' causing a small fire and huge amounts of white smoke. The filters contained the fire until the engine was switched off, when it went out without damge, but without them I am pretty sure the damage would have been substantial. I have heard tales of foam filters going up in flames fairly readily, so I am sticking to my K&N's Trying to get out of the garage
  7. The current thread on removable steering wheels prompts me to ask about something which has been annoying me for a while There is a rattle or knocking which appears to be coming from the steering column as it passes through the bulkhead, and is vibration induced. All the steering column joints are tight, so could it be a bearing problem? I am not familiar with the mechanics of the column/bearings. Is this a common problem and can it be easily fixed. The S/W is the non removable type. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  8. I use the bog standard Halfords filter which has never given any problems (19k miles) and costs under £3. This is on an equally bog standard 1600 XFlow which has an oil change every 4000 miles. I can let you have the part number if you want it. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  9. I began a thread on this topic on 20th Dec which you might like to look at. The BS standard is available, but you will need to search the bike shops. Most bike shop owners will try to sell you the ACU Gold standard, which I understand is the top bike grade but which will probably not meet the required car standards. The other acceptable standard is the Snell 2000, but I failed to find anyone who stocked it. With all the 7 racers out there, there must be someone who can provide first hand experience as to the what, where and how much of crash hats. Come on Guys!! Good luck Trying to get out of the garage
  10. As part of the winter service I want to change the water hoses, especially those connecting the fresh air heater to the heater valve. They are 16mm, one is 2"x2" with a 90deg angle, and the other is about 8"x2" with a 90deg angle. I also want to change the straight runs from the front of the car back to the heater. CC have been unable to provide the bends. Anyone out there know where I can get some smart hoses Thanks Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  11. I bought one for my X Flow at the weekend from Caterham. It consists of a lever which bolts on to the Weber, plus the actual spring. I don't know if you will require a similar set up, but mine cost almost £20 for not very little ☹️ Trying to get out of the garage
  12. My X flow has done 18k on the original shocks without any adjustment. I have no reason to believe they are not working OK, but if possible I would like to check the set up during the imminent winter service. The only markings I can see on the shocks is 'Gas Spax' plus rudamentary adjustment instructions. Can anyone advise how I go about checking that the settings are correct, and what the correct settings should be a) for road use and b) for track days Trying to get out of the garage
  13. I'm planning to do my first club track day at Silverstone in March , so I am busy getting my act together. I have seen a reference to an oil overflow catch tank being advisable/necessary for track days, but I can see no way of fitting one. My car is a 1600 X flow with a Caterham fitted unleaded head. There is no obvious breather or overflow pipe which can be connected to an overflow tank. Any thoughts 🤔 Trying to get out of the garage
  14. Check (or get someone to check!) the tightness of the bolts on the alternator. I have had experience of this creating quite a lot of noise if it is not tight. It is held onto the block by two bolts - make sure they are both still there. Trying to get out of the garage
  15. Does anyone have a recommendation for an MOT garage in West / East Sussex (East Grinstead area)? 🤔 Trying to get out of the garage
