  1. Bars leaks is a good and cheap first step. It will pick up most small leaks. I used it on my Xflow rad four years ago, and it still holds good. Trying to get out of the garage
  2. Got any jobs in Saumur 🤔 😬 😬 😬 😬 Trying to get out of the garage
  3. I have fitted the cork gasket using nonsetting gasket goo. It seems to be oiltight (lots of blatting last two days) 😬 but it is messy and I am not too confident of the long term result. One of the problems is that the gasket doesn't seem too well suited to the shape of the cover/head. This may be due to using Camberley Auto Factors version rather than pure Henry Ford. I reckon the paper gasket solution sounds good if it really is oiltight, doesn't need lots of sticky stuff to fix it and doesn't compress and need constant checking. I'll try that next time. Thanks for all the ideas guys (and gals ) Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  4. I go with Den on this one. I use Mobil 15/50 in my XFlow and after 20K miles the oil pressure is as good as ever. Change it once a year. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  5. Any idea what mileage you are likely to get out of 539's just for road use? Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  6. I hope to use some time over the weekend cleaning old oil and gunge off the block (XFlow) and various ancillary items. Any views on the best cleaner to use, and any tips/concerns/horror stories? Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  7. What 7 version? On my crossflow there is a junction box taped to the upper chassis just inboard of the front wheel. It is a rubber block and the end terminals just push into it. I had the same problem as you, and found that it was just a bad fit into the box. You will need to check the wiring diagram to pick out the right couloured wire. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  8. Thanks Guys Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  9. Thanks Casbar . Do you have a contact for Burtons please (preferably on the net) 🤔 Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  10. That's really tough ☹️ I would be interested to, as I have quite a few small 'dings' on the edge of the rear arches. Does anyone know the best way to clean up and fill the edges prior to repainting 🤔. The damage is too small for the usual fibreglass/resin approach, but would an ordinary body filler do the trick 🤔 Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  11. Having replaced the old cork gasket with a new one, I had the usual problems of getting it oil tight and now have oil all over the engine I read an archive thread recommending 'paper' gaskets from Roger King or Redline, so I intend to get one of these asap. Can anyone advise about fitting them 🤔. Are they fitted 'dry' and do they compress and need tightening in the same way as the cork ones 🤔 Hope you all had a good blat in the sunshine today Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  12. Rog, I had the same problem a couple times on my XFlow on 40's - lots of white smoke. The secret is to switch off quick and then start it up after a few minutes. I understand that it is unburnt petrol spitting back and catching fire in the air filters. K&N's deal with this well if you switch off fairly quickly, otherwise you might melt the rubber surrounds. I spoke to Caterham about this, and their only recommendation was to try to run a bit leaner, but it hasn't been a problem as long as you are aware it can happen. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  13. But isn't the Eggar cover limited to £500 excess on track days? £2000 could hurt in more ways than one. I agree that there is little logic in distinguishing between L7 Club approved events and other recognised track day suppliers. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  14. Tim, I have the same arrangement on my XFlow, and have just had a look at it. Although the two unbolted pipes are a slide fit, they are pushed fully home against the inside of the collector, and as a result do not rattle. Is it possible for you to push the pipes closer together, possibly by adjusting the bolt alignment on the pipes or at the exhaust end 🤔 terry Trying to get out of the garage
  15. Whoops - meant to say 420 on passenger side, more like 425 on drivers side. Terry 😳 Trying to get out of the garage
  16. Yep, I agree with that! In fact measured on the passenger side I get 420mm, but more like 420mm on the drivers side. The difference may be due to the thickness or shape of the weld at either end. I measured right along the centre of the top edge. Hope that helps. Day off tomorrow - looks like being dry and sunny *cool* terry
  17. OK - will do. Just leaving work and will be back to you later - wot a life ☹️ Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  18. At the risk of Hijacking the thread, I bought the second spring kit from Caterhams for my 1600 XFlow (cost about £20 for lever and spring). I haven't fitted it yet, but wonder how others have done it. The lever clearly fits on the spindle for the second (front) carb, but where do you anchor the loose end of the spring. The first spring on my car is anchored to a small retainer on the dip stick column, but there is no obvious pont for a second spring. Is this a DIY job 🤔 Terry Trying to get out of the garage

  20. Thanks Justin. I'm surprised, that sounds very thin, and I would probably change them before that for my own peace of mind, but is is useful to know that I still have a fair bit of safe wear left. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  21. Do you mean the tube which forms the top edge of the side skin i.e.where the side skin is rolled over at the top, with the stainless cover - if you see what I mean. I can measure it for you tonight on my '96 Classic if it helps. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  22. Is there a recommended depth of brake lining at which point the pads / shoes should be changed - 1600 XFlow. And does it differ between the rear shoes and the front pads.It used to be easy when they used rivets!! (The next question will be what to replace them with ) Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  23. Elie, yes I tried the odometer bit. I set the odo to 0000, it then turned for one mile i.e. the next turnover point, and then stopped as well. Further attempts to get it to roll proved useless. Chris, it looks like I will have to do the deed with the screwdriver and hope I can do something when I get inside. The dials on the 7 do seem a weak point. I have had more trouble with tachos and speedos than with any other part. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  24. Andy, I have a similar car. I have always used the normal Halfords filter ( I can find the ref no. if you want), along with Mobil 1 fully synthetic. Using 0/40 or 5/40, pressure is good, but it does sit in the red at idle when hot. This year I have changed to 15/50 ( I think, maybe 15/40) and this has resulted in a very slightly higher pressure under load, and it stays out of the red on hot idle. No problems with reaching pressure quickly. If this is a new problem. I would revert to the old filter choice and see if that solves the problem. Someone out there may also be able to advise if this is likely to be an oil pressure relief valve problem. Terry Trying to get out of the garage
  25. Thanks Chris, that is what I thought, but it seems a bit crude! Question is, once the thing is apart, will it be possible to do anything on the repair front 🤔 Terry Trying to get out of the garage
