  1. Take off the windscreen ...................and buy an interchangeable aeroscreen. It only takes 5 minutes to change with a bit of practice. Edited by - Tiff on 28 Oct 2004 16:07:22
  2. Did it myself a few weeks ago. Full tank 😳 Needless to say it stopped after about 10 miles. At the recovery yard the mechanic who emptied it all out and refilled it, had all sorts of this type of experience and said: The thing to watch out for in the future is the seals on the fuel pump. With no lubrication from the petrol they can perish. If you've got a "normal" car a pump replacement is not a big problem BUT if you have (I think he said) an Audi or a BMW, the fuel pump is inside the fuel tank and its a major operation and cost. 2. Our fleet manager says that Vauxhalls don't like it at all and 2- 3000miles down the road there will be problems. Edited by - Tiff on 19 Oct 2004 12:15:25
  3. At Croft recently, on the finishing straight by the pits, my R300 was registering 102db, and an R400 was at 107db. Both were "standard" exhausts. I have no idea about the calibration of the meter the chap was using , ie whether the actual levels were correct, but as a direct comparison from one to the other - Yes it is louder, by about 5 db.
  4. Kiwi black restorative shoe polish !! Did a great job on mine

    Burnt on grit

Wonderwheels !! It brings the stainless up really bright, and any stains that are left are then easy to remove with autosol or similar. I'm careful about getting it on the paintwork tho'.
  6. Never tried it but (for us wimps with heaters) how about putting on the heater fan to max with the heater itself turned off?
  7. Me too - happened on a cloudless day on the moors road to Whitby. Haven't a clue what caused it, everything checked out OK, and hasn't happened since.
  8. From your descriptionn this sounds similar to some I made up a couple of years ago - though yors sound a lot more professional - they certainly worked - but the real breakthrough in reducing turbulence at speed came when I put half doors on as well.
  9. I had this conversion on my last car. (P840 WKH) It started life as a 1.6l 100bhp, and went to 1.8l 155 bhp by Roger King (4 gears). It was more torquey, easier to drive, and on road running had better petrol consumption. Performance was excellent. I now have an R300, and in a straight line notice very little difference in acceleration up to 70 or so.
  10. Ref: the original thread on height of the centre post. My experience is with the Caterham supplied screen and mirrors. On SOME LH corners, particularly going in to the complex at Croft, the mirror obscures the apex. On others eg Mansfield, and entering the Mountain at Cadwell it's fine. As someone said above it depends on your height, seat, and whether you sit upright or "slump". At Croft I sat in another 7, where they had LOWERED the standard Caterham centre mirror, and found it the best option. I'm thinking of doing the same. CHALLENGE...............Will some tooled-up blatter invent an adjustable version? With an inner and outer tube and locking device? That would be the ideal answer.
  11. You can apply the velcro direct to the lining - not using the sticky pad. (The chinguard on my helmet isn't lined - so I had to use the sticky pad on the mouthpiece.)
  12. The wear on my CR500's is approaching the end of their legal road life - but how much longer can I use them on the track for? and still get the same grip? I'm specifically talking CR500's here, I know there are a million views on other tyres out there.
  13. I had the same problem after a trackday. I had not seated the dipstick properly (only by 2-3mm) and got oil all over the side of the engine, under the floor, and in fact first noticed it when my heels started to slip on the rubber mat as the oil had found its way into the footwell. Have done 3 tarckdays and 1.5k miles since with it seated properly with no problem
  14. I fitted the very cheap OMP intercom mentioned from DT. Its now done 4 trackdays AND, not advertised in the blurb, it has a jack input for a CD/tape player. Its a bit tinny I have to admit but its done the job well on the track. I attached the unit with velcro between the seats on the rear bulkhead. Everyone said it was cr@p but its still going. Good enough for me.......
  15. Ah - those were the days - the under the dash handbake in my first 7. I used to dream of leggy blondes in miniskirts sitting beside me and having to use the handbrake ALL the time....................... Unfortunately it never happened ☹️
  16. I have had my Spa mirrors on the sidescreens on 2 caterhams, and also on the interchangeable aeroscreen with no problems. On the sidescreen I used one of the existing mirror holes and drilled a second fixing hole, and also a third for tightening the mirror arm. How do you tighten the mirror arm grubscrew if they are attached to the screen stanchion? If it is working loose with vibration it can't be tight enough.
  17. I had Brooklands on my old car and have the interchangeable aero on the new. The aeroscreen offers minimal protection compared to the Brooklands. With the aero the airflow hits me (5ft 10") around eyebrow level, whereas with the Brooklands I felt it was mostly passing over my head. Another thing I notice is that with the aero, on the way to a track day, driving for an hour or more on a motorway/A road with a helmet on, my neck gets quite tired due to my head constantly resisting the airflow. This didn't happen with the Brooklands. Luckilly it is not the case on the track with constant changes of speed/direction.

    Bench Seats

I went the reverse way and noticed I had much more leg room when I had the bench seat. I had to change the pedal position. I'd guess 3 - 4 inches.
  19. The third hole allows you access (with an allen key) to the bolt which tightens the arm of the mirror in the position you want - similar to the allen key bolt on the top of the mirror which determines the swivel angle.
  20. The answer, according to Caterham Midlands, is NO. They put my car through SVA for me and I'd built it with small Spa Forumula mirrors. For the SVA test Midlands "borrowed" a set of sidescreens frrom a conventional car to get it through. They told me the Formula mirrors are smaller than the size required by SVA.
  21. On my previous cart - a P reg Xflow - there was a large cover over the linkage accessed by 4 screws which also held the gaiter in place. You need to take the knob off, undo the screws and the cover and gaiter come off in one piece. it's then easy to acces the linkage. If its riveted it's easy to drill the rivets out.
  22. Using the existing relay worked fine for me - I had the car for 5 years after I fitted new horns.
  23. I have an bog standard R300 and was surprised to get past M3's at first an Oulton Park, and then a Croft trackday. On the straights the acceleration seemed fairly similar, but I pissed all over them on the corners, and on each occasion left them trailing in my wake.
  24. I already had poppers fitted for a tonneau. I just used the same locations (4). Seems to work fine. The popper at the front bottom is a bit further inboard of the half door than I'd like - but once it's on, it looks fine.
  25. On my first car firstly I drilled holes and bolted it on, then got a personalised plate and stuck it on with sticky halfords pads, then reduced to a small size number plate - sticky pads again. My new car was registered by Caterham as they put it through SVA, and they used the glue mentioned above. I've had no problems with any of these attachment methods.
