  1. re Ratrace; not easy to contact by phone i agree but I got a very prompt call back after leaving an email. .....ratrace@ratrace-motorsport.co.uk Rick
  2. There is unquestionably something dodgy with the reading, the needle is fully deflected. I am also pretty confident that the float is free as the measured resistance is about right for a 3/4 full tank. I live in Welwyn Garden and would ply food and drink to anyone who would be willing to offer on-site help. Rick
  3. Since changing the fuel tank I have had problems with the fuel gauge readings. Gauge read ¼ full (when full) then after some weeks decided to read full (when not) and has stayed that way ever since. I know nothing about electrics or how the gauges work or the meanings of what I have measured with a multimeter; not too sure I even know what I’m doing with the multimeter. I desperately need HELP. Car currently has about ¾ of a tank. Resistance across the two terminals on the sender is 25; this figure would appear to be correct from all the fcuking about I did months ago. The voltage at the sender (green/black wire) is 3.9. Voltage at the gauge (green/black wire) is 3.9. What should be my next step? Cheers Rick
  4. I've at last got around to 'replacing' the gear seal on the angle drive to the gearbox. Having removed the angle drive I fished around for the damaged seal.....I cannot find any seal !!! Might explain my gearbox oil leak. Which way round does the seal go? Does the flat face go gearbox side or drive side? Thanks for any help. Rick
  5. Roger - I can only asume you have had a drink too many for lunch as your reply is that of a teenager trying to be clever; and failing. You do need to get out more, have a word with your mum. Nigel - from my many cries for help on this site I can assure you that Roger is in a very small minority (covering their lack of social skills with 'smart' replies) and there are many in our club willing to offer help withouy trying to offer lessons in 'English'. Rick
  6. If it's any help I took my sender out of the car and took the following resistance values; Full:16; 3/4:45, 1/2:60, 1/4;110, Empty:270. Full and empty were easy to take as it is the limit of travel but intermidiate readings were more difficult as the float moves through an arc so I wouldn't take the values as gospel. Need to add that I appear to continue with duff readings at the fuel gauge and have given up any more investigations for Christmas. Rick
  7. Thanks for all the advice and the guide to checking. Replaced a couple of dodgy terminals after testing guages as described by Nigel and reading now seems to be OK. Rick
  8. Having thought that changing the fuel tank was the difficult bit; oh no it wasn't. Fuel gauge now playing up. Before I bore everyone with what I have done and seek even more help is anyone able to tell me what the input voltage to the sender should be. I am measuring 4v. Rick
  9. Additional MOT info regarding exhaust emissions for Caterham cars taken from VOSA's manual; The VIN Code consists of the 6th, 8th and 9th digit of the VIN number. Where the 10th digit of the VIN is equal to or less than 'W' and the 6th digit is 'C' or 'K', the vehicle concerned should be considered as 'amateur built' and as such should receive a visual smoke test only. Thanks Grant for all your work. Rick
  10. 1 ticket spare for Friday, Sat, Sun. I have the ticket and would send 1st class post if wanted. Rick
  11. I have a test certificate. VOSA (nice John) told Mr MOT man that the manual is badly worded and they are going to issue an amendment. Not holding my breath. The MOT station was Kwik Fit at Welwyn Garden. As I mentioned at the beginning of this saga the 'test' guys were very OK. The problem is/was their interpretation of 'not affected by any other lamp' and to be fair one could argue that full beam is another lamp. As LazerBrain says, it's a check for poor earth etc.
  12. Rang VOSA again and spoke to very nice man again...John. He was full of apologies that the matter remains unresolved. He tells me he is ringing test centre NOW and that I should make my way there to be issued certificate. Not holding my breath but will make my way there. Rick
  13. Still waiting for a call from VOSA. The guys at the test station are as frustrated as me as they were told to issue a fail. It's VOSA who need to get their act together. I wish I knew the makes and models of 'standard' cars that would fail on this. The 'fail' is due to the fog light being adversely affected by the operation of another lamp (full beam). Rick
  14. I rang VOSA this morning and after a bit of faffing about I am told by John that it is a known issue and provided it is originally wired in this manner all OK and that I can return to MOT centre to have car passed. Just before leaving I get a call from MOT centre to say that they have spoken with VOSA (Craig) and the car should fail; "affected by any other lamp". I tell them of my telephone conversation with John just minutes earlier. They have been on the again to VOSA and John is out of the office so we are now both waiting on a call back from VOSA for clarification. I am getting a bit pi55ed - off. Rick
  15. RS2000 - I am certain that they checked the fog lights specifically with both dip and full beam. It now seems odd that they do this as SM25T has pointed out that so many cars are wired for fog lights to go off on full beam. The guys have accepted that they may be at fault and will phone me tomorrow after speaking with VOSA. I have read of this problem on other forums and when VOSA were contacted their statement was that if the car is wired for fog lights to go off on full beam then it is OK. Hopefully this is the info the guys will get tomorrow. Rick
  16. SM25T - you gave me hope stating that most (all?) cars operate like that...bloody wife's car doesn't. Just nipped out to check.
  17. Just been back to MOT station to discuss test with dipped lights. I must confess I did not tell them to RTFM (would like to keep them on my side). They pointed out that the manual goes on to state that the fog lights must not be affected by any other lamp and they have understood this to include full beam. They are going to check with VOSA tomorrow. I should add that up to this point they were very good in testing the car; asking where they should jack from, allowing me to get the headlights into alignment whilst they held the clever box thing in front of the lights, no problems over emission testing. I'll see what happens tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's input. Rick
  18. Car failed MOT as the fog-light goes out when lights on full beam; OK on dipped. As can be seen from me asking for help I know FA about electrics. I have however checked (using a multimeter) that the voltage to the fog-light switch reads 11.2v on dip and 0.3v when switched to full beam. For the want of doing anything else I checked continuity on the dip/full beam switch and this looks OK when switching. Help please. 19. We were walking towards Meldon Park when you drove past; sounded glorious. Rick
  20. Pretty certain there is a crank sensor magnet and if you were to lose this the car will not run. Just another item to put into the 'suggestions box'. Interested in your experience as I will be going abroad either later this year or next and as the car is over 16 years it is excluded from some of those offering breakdown cover. Certainly do not want to end up being refused repatriation of the car (or me come to that). Rick
  21. Thanks for the replies. Aeroscreens has supplied the 'missing link' as to why my car although registered after 1975 is a visual only inspection; kit built and first registered before August 1998. Rick
  22. My car is Vx1.6 kit built 1st registered May 1998. It is (or should be) subject to a visual only inspection for emissions. Never had a problem but thinking of using a garage chain for MOT. Does anyone know if the computerised record system used by MOT testing stations will automatically pick up that my car is exempt. Or will I need to provide proof; never have done in the years of ownership. Rick
  23. Thanks for info SM25, it made me look at my sender unit. Mine is missing the eyelet connector that should sit under a screw head. Jeez, I could have been the first 7 in orbit. I will make up the extra connection. Hi Tim - I have a Vx 1.6 live axle and the tank came out from the bottom pretty easy although my joy was short lived when I recognised that the little plastic 'thing' sitting on the garage floor was a broken diff breather that I snapped off in removing the tank. Putting the tank back was more of a challenge but at the point of giving up the bloody thing just suddenly went in easy. Good luck. Rick
  24. Just put in new fuel tank and now wondering if it should be earthed. The one I took out wasn't. Rick
