  1. How old is the battery and did you measure the flat battery voltage. Now fully charged, what is the voltage when not connected. Piers
  2. RJ. I have just searched for magnetic drain plugs and found a company called Magnetic drain plugs.co.uk. Looks a good product with very high quality magnets fitted and they do all sizes. Not sure if it would be good for a differential, but I would use it on my engine. Piers
  3. My K 1.8 wet sump has a 14mm sump plug. It may be the same as a dry sump plug. Please check. The 14 mm sump plug is from a Land Rover 300TDI and part number: UAM2957L. It comes with the washer. Piers
  4. Just out on interest, I had to wait till my son was 25 before I could get him insured on my 7. Piers
  5. As Ian says above, but I would take the seat out and check it moves freely for the full length. Then reinstall carefully making sure it still moves fully. You may need a few plastic washers on the front to raise it a small amount. Taking the seat out is best done with two people, so get you son to help out.
  6. Last year on the way back from the L to B meeting, I hit a large stone. It cracked the sump and the replacement was £430 plus labour to fit. It was an expensive last Blat of the year. Piers
  7. This is Freestyle 7 and it was parked next to L7FST (another Freestyle car) at the London to Brighton meeting on the 4th November. See L7FST post about the fires in California. Piers
  8. As Redline is the sole distributor for older Caterham and Lotus 7 parts, I would think that obtaining most Caterham products in the USA would be rather difficult. I know that Redline exports a lot of kit, so why not try them. At least it will fit. There is a Caterham distributor in the States and they to should be also able to supply you. The wining factor is that Redline will have it in stock and know exactly what is needed. Piers
  9. Just checked invoice from Redline (2/11/2010) and confirm part number is YLU101430. The description is “ Alternator mounting bracket Rover 1.8. Piers
  10. Mine broke a number of years ago (R300K) due to over tightening. I got one from Redline. It is the one YLU 101430. Piers

    O ring dilema

B & Q do bags of various size O rings. It may help. Piers
  12. I am not sure, but you could try your local paint specialist, as many provide spray cans to your specification, very reasonably. Now you have the paint code, it should be straight forward. Piers
  13. The colour for the Anthracite wheels is Carr’s-1L1424ST.SP base coat with a clear lacquer top coat. Piers
  14. I have had a Fluke meter for 25 years and a great bit of expensive kit. There are other cheaper options that will do the job, but buy the best you can afford.
  15. Race cars without batteries have a quick plug in (male/female) connection for engine starting and this takes much more than 40 amps. I am sure you can search for this. Piers
  16. Yes, the single grub screw was taken out before I unscrewed the gear knob. I'll try some fiber washers tomorrow. It may well have had something inside the knob that fell out, but I did not see anything. Thanks for the information.
  17. I should have added that it is the metal Caterham 6 speed gear knob.
  18. This afternoon I fitted a new leather prop shaft cover to replace the old damaged one. To do this requires the removal of the gear knob that has a small allen screw in it, which I undid. When I removed the gear knob, the six speed gear indications were at 12 o'clock. It was very very tight to undo and I used my wife's kitchen bottle top removal tool to undo it. Now the new cover is in, but when i tighten up the gear knob, it only goes to 10 o'clock. So I am doing something stupidly wrong or was there something in the gear knob to limit it. Not having the gear indications at 12 o'clock looks all wrong.
  19. Correct, K&N do a spray can with oil for air filters.
  20. I have bought a new prop shaft tunnel cover for my R300K. The original tunnel cover was damaged by the Tillet seats cutting into it on both sides. The original Tillet seats were removed some time ago and replaced with leather seats. So, I now want to remove the old tunnel cover and fit the new one. I am assuming that I have to somewhere release the cable on the centrally mounted handbrake lever to get it near vertical and undo any holding screws, before it can be removed. Can someone advise the best way to do this? Do I need to remove the seats and where are the captive screws holding the cover in place?
  21. 18.1 volts from the alternator means the regulator has had it and at that voltage will damage your battery.
  22. Let’s hope it is the sender as they are notorious for failing. About five years ago, my company did some long term diesel engine running tests on oil pressure senders. We found that the cheap Chinese made units were in most cases lasting 20/25 hours and in brief were crap quality. The more expensive VDO German made lasted for the running test that was 1000 hours. Good luck and hope it is the sender.
