I had the same problem, only i couldn't select reverse.
Take the gear lever apart (3 bolts) strip down and regrease circlip (which will make a bid for freedom if you're not careful) and spring. Simple 5 minute job.
It does however require you to take the tunnel cover off which is a pain in the S3. Undo the handbrake, to assist the removal.

Was thinking of fitting to the base of the oil tank,(dry sump) just to give the oil a bit of a headstart. Surely any heat is a benefit.
What water heater do you use then?
Don't expect Steve to rush the job. I gave him my gearbox in November, i told him i needed it for Christmas.........I'm still waiting despite copious visits and phone calls.
