  1. sorry I should have added that unless I drove over 3,000 revs when the lambda sensor on mine went, it also kangarooed like crazy. Made keeping to 30mph through town "interesting".

  4. I had a similar thing when the lead on the starter motor which also goes to the alternator came loose progressively. The car eventually stopped when the nut fell off the end of the bolt. I managed to drive it far enough to get it safely off the road fortunately. I'd also check the earths by the battery i.e. remove and clean. Mine is a 2009 1.6 Sigma too.

  6. Hi, I wish I still had a six speed box car. Fantastic for driving on the twisty roads of Scotland. No issues with driving to Spain several times with the six speed with lots of motorway cruising, no issues with the engine revving higher than with my current car with a five speed type 9. Current car feels a tad flat with the standard type 9 ratios in my current car. Type 9 with other ratios may be a different story. I'd recomend sticking with the six. Feels a much nicer gear change too.
  7. Intermittently my tacho and fuel gauge don't register until the car has done two or three miles. Never have managed to sort it. Normally more frequent in spring when the car is cold and damp, summer rarely occurs. Also occurs if the car has got very wet. Have put it down to a bad earth somewhere but never able to find. After winter layup I normally take the earths that I know the location of and clean/lubricate them as this has also been the source of non-starting/breakdown. I have a mechanical oil pressure and temperature gauge now as a by the way.

  11. My goodness they are some price now aren't they now I've looked around a few websites. My mate has a couple of four speeds but wants a five so that might unlock some part ex or something with Road and Race or whoever.
  12. Thanks to all for the advice, particularly the Facebook page which looks interesting.
  13. Good morning, my pal is doing up his dad's old mkII Cortina and is looking a five speed type 9 gearbox. Any tips on commercial suppliers or does anyone have something surplus to requirements?
  14. If the sensor is the one with the light on the back of it, you can check that the light does light up on all 39? teeth on the hub when the hub is rotated slowly. Mine didn't register a few of them so the needle was bouncing and erratic. Perfect after adjustment when all the teeth were registering.
  15. Does anyone know what happened to Starcom and when? I have a Starcom Digital so am interested for future reference. Thanks.

  20. My speedo just failed when abroad in Belgium after a few wobbles. The best tip I saw from John's speedometer article, which ended up fixing mine, was making sure to count the 43 pulses from the LED for one complete revolution once the sensor is set. If 43 not counted, readjust. Once tightened up, re-check. Needle is more rock solid than it has ever been.
  21. Hi, I've been trying to buy some lightweight trainers, driving shoes, racing boots but with little success. I have some old leather Adidas trainers, fit like a glove. Haven't been able to find anything similar in the shops. Ordered two pairs of Adidas trainers from Demon Tweeks, first pair size 10 1/2 were 10mm narrower than my existing size 11 trainers, second pair size 11 were just longer but no wider! Have scanned the internet for shoes/boots which are identified as "wide fitting"...no luck. Don't want to keep ordering things and then sending them back. One guy when I showed him my old trainer said they old fashioned.....I said that obviously means I need surgery on my foot then to fit anything current! Anyone else got old fashioned wide feet and therefore footwear suggestions?
  22. I did an article for Low Flying the other month talking about myself and Peter Haslam getting upgrades to our Sigma 150's. I did have a look at changing the car and concluded that I might get more power but other problems which I've already sorted on my car and would cost more money on top of the cost to change. I took some advice on a Duratec conversion and the advice was that it was too big a change i.e. too many other things needed to be attended to so not cost effective with the downside of extra weight. In the end went for a Premier Power upgrade to 175 BHP with lightened flywheel, clutch and alternator. The result is very impressive and the cheapest of the options I looked at. Hope that helps. If you want some more info on what was done, please send me a PM.
  23. Hi, I had the same problem in Northern Spain, the police asked us to remove the headsets. We went through the iterations with the Starcom Digital of throat mic, boom mics and finally headsets. The headsets do what they say on the tin and I find them ok for a full days driving. The boom mics wobble about too much to get consistent volume from both parties. The in ear bit I found was poor quality. The throat mic was good where your neck is a reasonable size and it stays in place. If you or your good lady has a small neck, it doesn’t stay in the right place to get consistent volume or quality. I bought the combined headset and mic from Starcom and it worked fine. It cost me a bit to go through the learning exercise but I was able to sell the unsuccessful (for us) bits on here so not too bad,
  24. My set is now sold leaving Peter's set.
