  1. Don't forget that 200kgs of water sloshing about in a tank will cause serious handling problems. So always drive with the tank either brim full or completely empty
  2. A long time ago George Polley told me the direction arrows on Yokohama's indicated the direction in which the tyre plys best resisted torque due to their lay-up method. Therefore, rears should only be fitted in the correct orientation as the torque applied to the tyyres comes from being driven under power. However, as the only torque applied to the front tyres is under braking, these should be fitted the reverse way round. This way all tyres are getting maximum use out of the tyre ply lay-up.

  6. Just an addition to the previous post. After making your nice solid copper gasket heat it to cherry red and throw it in a bucket of cold water to make anneal it and make it lovely and soft. This way it will seal much better.

  15. For the past two years (5000 miles) I have been using standard unleaded petrol with Castrol Valvemaster Plus in my 1700 Supersprint. No valve seat wear has been detected (no measurable changes in valve clearances) and the engine runs very, very well with no pre-ignition or knocking right up to 6500rpm.
  16. Griff I run a Sigma BC800 and have set the wheel size as WS1005 with 185-60x13 027R's. This gives a slightly fast reading on the speedo but in these days I rather have a slight safety margin than absolute accuracy. John A
  17. It is essential you use the correct tool or you will ruin the fasteners. You require a shaped punch to turn over the hollow shank of the fastener and a dished anvil to support the fastner head without damage. Very simple to use and Redline will supply it together with fasteners if required. John A

    wipers

Most of the problems encountered with Caterham wipers is down to corrosion in the switch. This needs to be cleaned out to ensure ALL the contacts within work as required. See previous postings on the subject. John Alston
  21. Just a word of warning. I fitted an Omex Speed System (Combined Rev-Limiter and Gear Change Light) to my XFlow and had nothing but problems with random miss-Firing. Omex were very helpful and supplied various filters and chokes in an effort to cure the problem. However, in the end I had to return it as Omex were confident their unit was incompatable with the old style Lucas Constant Energy ingition system fitted to my car due to high amount of random eletromagnetic radiation these old systems produce. 22. In my experience Caterham's switches can be a constant source of electrical maladies. Dismantle the switch, give all the contacts a good clean, smear vaselene over all contacts and re-assemble. This method has permanently cured problems that have occured with almost every switch on my Super Sprint. Don't lose the springs and bits though !!!! John A
  23. You want to get the four spoke RS pattern wheel fitted to a number of rear wheel drive fords including the Escort and Capri. The offset is almost identical to the Caterham supplied wheels and they fit staight on. (Ensure you get the correct wheel nuts with the wheels as there are several differing types) I do not know whether the rim clearance is sufficient for a big braked car but it is certainly OK for a standard braked Seven as I have a set on mine. John A
