    Endoscopes

Having been frightened by pictures of grot traps I propose inspecting my inner panels Has anyone experience of these? Seems like a good price, but waht about that comment re Windows Seven? www.dartsystems.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=167_117_123&products_id=781.
  2. Aeroscreens not a good idea up here, too many herds of dairy cows have crossed the road. Had ago at swopping over the glass last night. It all went like a dream, undid the small screw at the base on each side, gently spread the sides of the frame by tapping witha hammer, pulled frame off, turned it through 180 degress and reversed the process. Magic, and it saved me spendig the £400 or so CC wanted for a new screen kit. 1700 Super Sprint, Team Lotus and clams
  3. Referrring to my previous mail re turning inside out slightly damaged screen to pass MOT. The screen came out like a dream. Only problem was that I had to cut the cables to the screen heating element. Question: do I have to have a heated screen to pass the MOT? I recall something about having to have some from of demisting device on windscreens? Thanks
  4. Do not be over confident as to the sealing abilities if silicon mastic. I have found perfect looking seals hiding areas where the adhesion has failed. Always have avery cloe lok/prod. I agree with the point about letting sealed areas breath, removable gromits do the job.
  5. Thanks guys, lots to go on. I seem to recall from other threads that my chassis (An Arch 1996 S3) may have hidden under the skin, a threaded hole in the lower rail to allow the fitting of a forward bracket to support the silencer. Anybody know where this is located. I don't want to go making bradle holes on spec!
  6. Guys, thanks for your help. Re the "7 workshop" the only one i can find on line is for Austin Sevens. Are we talking about the same people?
  7. Have just blown my 3rd gasket between my 4:1 and the head at no.2&3 cylinders, in just 3000 miles. The gasket always blows at the top and in the same place. I have tried putting Halford's exhaust mastic over the break, but it does not hold. I have been given two possoble causes: 1, the lack of a forward bracket means the weight of the silencer is pulling the manifold away from the head. Or 2, that the faces of the manifold and head are not true and have to be ground square. Any suggestions? And how do I go about getting the surrfaces ground? I don't want to take the head off if I can help it. 1700 Super Sprint, Team Lotus and clams
  8. Whilst out for a blat the temp guage reading dropped to zero. The engine and water level are Ok so something has failed - the guage or a sensor? Am I safe in assuming that the rad fan is activated by a seperate circuit? Watch should I check to determine where the fault lies?

    Applying POR 15

So are you saying in the case of rust, just remove the flacky bits, an dthat it is OK to paint over rusty pit holes?. Whats marine wash? Will white spirit do instead? Thanks
  10. I'm planning on touching up all the peeling powercoating and stone chippings with the above. In previous years I have used Hammerite Smooth. Can I simply paint over this with POR 15 or do I have to rub down/apply a primer? 1700 Super Sprint, Team Lotus and clams

    Oil Overfill

Re XFlows oil levels. I drained and refilled my engine with the recommended volume to find the dipstick telling me it was over filled. I drained and refilled several times only to get the same result. I then contacted Tech Talk and established that my model -96 SS was subsceptable to the dipstick bracket subsiding, thus giving an over read. I therefore put a notch on the dipstick at the correct volume-now about 10mm above "full" and have run the car for 5000 miles with no ill effects. it makes me sudder to think that te previous owner ran the thing underfilled for so many years.! 1700 Super Sprint, Team Lotus and clams
  14. Thanks all We have checked all the usual things- fluids, broken bits, etc an dhad it up on stands but found nothing that we recognised as being odd. So car is off to main dealer.
  15. I was asked to check out a friend's Street Ka and found something most odd with the steering. When turning into a bend the car behaves as if it has roll understeer, even at very sedate speeds I.E turn the wheel and hold it steady into a bend, and midway through, the chosen degree of turn will suddenly but progressively tighten up without the steerimg wheel being moved. At high speed this is most alarming. Tyre wear is even and nothing appears to be loose. The car has only 20K on the clock and is straight, having been owned from new. Any suggestions as what next to check?
  16. Can Am, thank you for telling me, you have saved my garage's resident toad and assorted mice from an explosive tirade of ancient curses as I heard the nuts dropping forever out of my reach.
  17. I recommend placing it in the rad because it will always be covered by water. Slow leaks can leave a unit located in the filler pot above the water level and therefore liable to late triggering.
  18. One last thought. When removing the windscreen from the car, are the nuts that the hex bolts fit into secured to prevent them dropping down inside?

    Winter Storage

Stu, I leave mine on permanently with out ill effect. remember to top up your battery water first and to cover the electrodes with petro jelly. I use axle stands at the front and (big) wooden blocks at the rear - positioned just in front of the A bracket bolt. That allows my live axle to drop down and gives plenty of room for cleaning etc. If you are doing this don't forget to release the hand brake first.
  20. Thanks for your suggestions guys. I like the reversal idea. I won't be going for aeroscreens, I live in a farming community and have to drive over several dairy herd crossing points. Even with a full screen I already get splashes of organics on my clothes. In similar cirumstances and aero would get banned from entering the pub!
  21. Whilst out for gentle evening's blat I came up to overtake a truck, when a large stone got thrown up and hit my windscreen. 😳 The experince definitely underlined the wisdom of wearing goggles. However said stone has left a star crack 10 mm in dia, surrounded by a ring crack 25mm dia and 3mm wide. The epicentre of the strike is located at the top RH of the screen about 40mm from the upper and side edges of the glass. Question: Whilst not in my direct line of sight, does this damage consitute an MOT failure? If so where can I obtain a new screen at sensible cost?

    Winter Storage

Even a dry garage attracts dust and little furry friends. Carcoon avoids this and keeps up a gentle breeze inside the car, thus avoiding condensation and rot traps.
  23. If the above fails check for distortion of the tyres. I've experienced carcass distortion on well worn tyres, don't know why, heat build up maybe?

    Carcoon ???

I agree with DJ. My garage is an old barn with no DPC under the floor and being only two miles from the Irish Sea we get salt carried in on the winds. I have over wintered my 15 yr old beastie in a Carcoon, and as he says the discs stay shiny, the seats mold free and no condensation on the metal bits, even when the barn floor has been under water. By contrast my bike bright work went rusty in just a couple of weeks. Oh yes and the Carcoon comes with a built in battery charger. Worth every penny.
