  1. Excuse me if this has already been asked and replied to in Blatchat but I'm a little unclear what the best route is. My 1.6 Supersport has 195/50R15 Michelin Pilots fitted. I have read with interest all the views on various Yokos etc but from my investigations at Demon Tweeks etc, none of the Yokos seem to be available in this size. Is this correct and if so, what tyres would work well as replacements for the Michelins?
  2. Had a look at the website - looks interesting. So has anyone seen one in action? But it doesn't 'know' where mobile speed cameras are!
  3. You might like to know that when the registration format changes next September (1.9.01) the font will be mandated as based on 'Charles Wright' and reduced from 57mm to 50mm wide. This will only apply to the new format ie 'AB51 DVL'. Transgress and you will face a fine (max £1000!). Imaginative use of fixing bolts will also be cracked down on. But they (DVLA) will still be happy to sell specific registrations for the usual fat fees! Doesn't seem entirely consistent to me! Aren't they nice to us!
  4. Think this clear tape is also called 'helicopter tape'. Try your local 'copter operator for a source.
  5. The halfshaft oil seal on the my diff drips a small amount of oil. The diff has been changed (twice in fact but the first replacement supplied by Caterham [under warranty] - was v.noisy and leaked even more than the first! Turned out to be one of their development diffs! They then supplied a new diff [LSD].) Checked the oil level - not a problem but it shouldn't leak. Asked at a local Ford dealer (it's a Ford diff of course) but they had no experience of leaky diffs. So how come I've had two 'leakers' (discounting Caterhams dev't diff). I've checked the half shaft sealing face and it is concentric with the stub axle. Anybody got any experience of this problem? Car is a '98 1.6K SS. First diff was a std non-LSD unit - changed it to an LSD when it started leaking.
  6. My 1.6K SS has Prisoner alloys with Michelin Pilot's fitted (195/50x15)and have often wondered about clouting speed humps etc but thus far have not had a problem - and there are quite a few around here to worry about. When building the car I was concerned about the ride height not being as the book recommends but there's not a lot you can do about it on std suspension. Perhaps some of you are carrying a bit more weight on board!
  7. In the past I've used Mer car polish/cleaner (as sold at Kit Car shows, NEC exhibitions and Halfords etc) to remove tar from the exhaust with great effect - might work on the melted plastic residue left after scrapping the excess off and not abrasive like wire wool etc
  8. I have a trolley jack (from Machine Mart) which fits underneath no problem. Question is, where is the best place to jack a Seven up at the front. I'm told that the 'obvious' place (the junction of several tubes just behind the steering rack X-member) should not be used as it not strong enough to take the load. The centre tube of these is large in diameter but a thin gauge tube. I also lift the rear of the car by jacking under the bush at the top of the 'A' frame. Doesn't seem very good to me and I don't really like it so does anybody have a better idea? It's not designed for loads in that direction. Cheers Ezzer
  9. I use a Carcoon for my Seven which is kept in an cold and damp garage. It's a bit pricey but works very well, stops all those problems caused by damp - corrosion, grabbing brakes, gremlins in the electrics etc etc. I can certainly recommend it as I could see my car going rusty even as I was building it! Now damp is nothing like the problem it was before. Helps keep it clean as well. Cheers Ezzer
