    Clutch Question

Kev, problem you have is thus (I think) to answer your question first, the clutch you have should be fine, its quite new and would work OK, but really in this application Caterham would specifiy there AP clutch and Cover (cost a coupla hundred quid), but thats not your real problem anyway. Flywheel is your problem! to mate your VVC to gearbox you will need a Rover 1.6 K series flywheel (rover VVC will not fit bellhousing), and a Ford based clutch (to fit the gearbox splines) Essentially the VVC flywheel and clutch you have are scrap. Now if you are using your VVC ECU then it must be a 1.6 flywheel (from Caterham or their lightweight one at £250 is nice). These flywheels have the correct trigger pattern for the crank position sensor info to ECU. Alternatively you could use you lightweight 1.4 flywheel but you'd need to run a programmeable ECU that can recognise the 1.4 flywheel trigger pattern. Emerald should do this but ISTR Emerald still cannot be used on VVC. Now if you'd bought a boggo 1.8 things would be different
  3. for 1.6 K....caterham sell them, in the online store, about £150. I Think QED also do them
  4. there you go, I even googled them for you... http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/index.html
  5. google out a company on the south coast somewhere call AVILEC. They fixed a MEMS for me last year. MEMS has lots of known weaknesses that they can sort out. Cost me about £100.
  6. what does it say in the owner guide? My wifes 2002 MX-5 owner guide says 5W-30 API SJ. Available from Ford or Mazda as a genuine service oil. Or from Halfords. The do a 5W-30 that would be bang on. Mazda (and Ford) have been designing on 5W-30's and 5W-20's for several years now and your engine will be optimised I imagine for a 5W-30.
  7. Euro 2 and Euro 3 are European emission levels that a vehicle must be homologated to. Generically Caterhams have derived their engines from either base Euro2 or Euro3 K series. It correct to note that a Euro2 base engine can be seen from the separate coil/disi type system whereas the Euro3 base engines have the distributor less, coil pack within the ignition lead type system. The R300 engines and supersport R where derived from Eu2 engines. Later superlights where derived from Eu3 engines. I understand though that any mods made to the base engine mean that the emission level set by the base engine homologation must still be met for SVA. I assume this was the reason why R300 engines with the rollybarrows where on Eu2 engines rather than meet the more stringent requirement that would be incurred by basing it on an Eu3 engine. Is also probably why they only did so many like this and now supply the R300 with a VVC derived Eu3 engine.
  8. I would imagine that Merc engine will be running cam chains, not belts.
  9. Yes, your in luck. Caterham branded, square bezel speedo with 2500 miles up. I bought it off blatchat but never used it. Has some wear to the bezel. ie some of the paints flaked or worn off. Edited by - fordy on 8 Nov 2004 20:18:14
  10. should come apart easily. engine and box have only been married for just over a year....
  11. Harry, i might have one of these. Will check at the weekend
  12. I swapped a few notes with Caterham and they think it unlikely a 1.4 supersport 5spd gearbox would be any different from almost all Caterham supplied 5spd gearboxes. They did however supply some old Classics with non-close ratio 5 spd boxes. But these would be rare. Apparently.

  14. question is, would anything other than a standard caterham supplied XR4i based 5 speed be used in any of the race cars from official Caterham race series over the years ??
  15. Anyone heard of the ratios being different on 1st and 2nd for standard Caterham supplied Type 9's? A fellow gearbox hunter has suggested that not all Caterham type 9's are the same and have used diff ratios in the past. So a few q.s 1. is it true? 2. what were the alternate boxes used in (1400 SS race cars ??) 3. how can you tell what ratios you have (gearbox out of the car). thanks
  16. I put a lightweight flywheel on my old 1400 supersport and it was superb. Engine spins up much quicker and give a lovely 'manic' edge. Sweet. are you running an Emerald? If so you can use the 1400 lightweight flywheel which where on offer at CC for only a £100. Just have a diff trigger pattern on the crankshaft position sensor which the Emerald will happily accept... Stu Foreshaw will be along soon I guess to fill in more detail. They do say anything more than about 140bhp will mean a short lived standard clutch. I'd go for the beefier set up while its all out.
  17. no just that the 1.6 supersport engine I bought for my new project comes from a 2001 superlight.
  18. cool, so the ex-superlight K series I bought will have a lightweight flywheel. sweet. hmm, wonder about the clutch though..
  19. do superlights come with lightweight flywheel as standard? also would say a 2001 superlight have ha an AP clutch as standard? thanks
  20. Gambo, thanks for the pics. Not what I'm looking for. Need high backs really. Look a bargain though. Think I've found a set of tillets now in any case. Thanks again. Still looking for a 6spd box
  21. can you send some pictures of the seats to carl@cgstow.freeserve.co.uk? thanks
  22. wanted: 6 spd gearbox (can p/ex for a recently refurbed 5 spd) Eu3 K series engine wiring loom Nice leather or vinyl tunnel top thanks Edited by - fordy on 1 Nov 2004 16:10:15
  23. Ian, interested in the tillet type seat mounts, yhm
