    Starter kit build

this has got me thinking..... ...but as SVA is tomorrow it might be hard to get an invoiced set of refurb parts to waive in front of the DVLA by tomorrow afternoon.... hmmm...

    Starter kit build

but you'll still need to have the engine refurbished (budget about £1500). You are allowed one reconditioned part and must have an invoice that states "reconditioned to as new"... I have just built a nicely specced 1.6 supersport/6spd for about £15K. Saving about 7 or 8 large ones on new. Using a lightly used (5000mile) ex-superlight engine/box. Some other second hand bits like tillets etc.. too. It will go on a Q but with that kind of saving, I can live with it 😬
  3. anyone know if this type of compressor http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=91520 or this type http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=13773 are the ones to go for for caterham springs?
  4. it looked like a bit of a young project. The documentation was sketchy to say the least. Digging deeper it did look to be a spin off group from Megasquirt.
  5. sounds hairy stu! have got myself access to some spring compressors....
  6. these new bare VHPD heads for sale recently.. what parts are required to populate the head, and roughly what cost?
  7. but what about the other set that do not have adjustables. Do I need spring compressors to remove the fixed platform?
  8. anyone heard of this? http://www.vems-group.org/ looks like a very capable diy ECU in the vein of Megasquirt but the website looks hugely techy and totally mindboggling. Any comments from those who understand these things. They are selling a wideband O2 sensor for only about 60 Euros and are building a meter to read it on - which looks nice. In fact it all looks nice - just the website portall in inpenetrable.
  9. On billies, will I need spring compressors? Am swapping the adjustable platforms from 1 set of billies to another and wondering if I will need some compressors?

  11. why do you need three dial indicators? anyone got a link to somewhere that describes the 'lift at TDC' method?

    speedo drive

was a simple job in the end. The speedo needed recalibrating. Was set up for 13000 pulses per mile roughly so just wasn't registering. Resetting to around 8500 pulses per mile got it close. I then used gearcalc to work out what revs at a certain speed in a certain gear I should be pulling and tweaked according to that. The dipswitch settings for the speedo are on Caerbonts website. As ever searching the blatchat archives laid out enough clues........

Hood, hoodsticks, bootcover and 2x doors. All in very good condition. Hood is almost mint infact. £250.

    speedo drive

its a second hand box but I did change the oil seal and it did indeed seem to be there, ie there is a square hole in a round section end to plug the quill into. Just didn't check it from the otherside under the domed plug. Which I am kicking myself for now.... Archives suggest this has been done in situ before but to make it easier requires a hole in the passenger footwell tunnel side in the right place. Guess its out with the dremel and file on saturday then...

    speedo drive

So the car is built but the speedo won't work. I checked that the angle drive operates the speedo OK by attaching to the dremel so can only assume something is wrong with the worm drive in the gearbox. Looks a bit tight to get it back out with gearbox (6spd) in the car. Anyone know if this is possible to do. If so how? Please don't tell me I have to take the engine and box back out.......
  16. thanks Boss, can we come back to this in a months time? Car is only just built (first time it saw the daylight was this morning!) and I intend to put it through the SVA test as is for now. Will start tinkering with it when I get it back. So planning on fitting the verniers in March. Will drop you a mail to sort then. Thanks again...
  17. I have a standard pulley and bolt sat in the garage somewhere........
  18. having just bought some pulleys...would be very interested in some of your NTL brackets BOSS ! whats the web address for Chronos Pierre? thanks Edited by - fordy on 3 Feb 2005 16:27:24
  19. the rover engine number is ground off the block by Caterham to fit the starter motor. they stamp a new engine number of their own on the edge of the ladder frame. Can confirm most supersports had hydraulic followers, mine did. On my old 1400SS I replaced my standard engine with a race one and this had mechanical tappets. Supersport cams are the same across 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 I believe (for hydraulic). I believe the cams for the 1.4 with mechanical tappets was slightly different. Early 1.4 heads were 'low port' heads which were only on the 1.4. Later the 1.4's got 'high port' heads which were the same as a 1.6 and a 1.8. I would assume most of the head parts are interchangeable though. Early 1.4SS had cast ali inlet manifolds. Later they got plastic ones like all the others. check out dave andrews website and the difference in heads
