  1. 7WOTW posted while I was writing my reply. Not sure about that method - never tried it
  2. Alan, I presume it is a Xflow engine. If it is a 2000E gearbox then certainly the box and engine need to come out together. I guess the Escort Sport box is the same but have no experience of it.
  3. No problem George. I have just checked in the Tony Weale book and the Caterham and Lotus parts have different part numbers. I suggest you contact Chris at Redline ( sales@redlinecomponents.co.uk ) and discuss.
  4. Chris at Redline has them as a Caterham part - I do not know if these are the same as Lotus.
  5. It cannot be the starter getting heated by the exhaust - it is on the opposite side of the engine
  6. I don't know what Jonathan has told you - it may be this: At the time you could get a 3 sided channel with the 4 threaded inserts that were welded to the top tube. Presumably Arch will still supply. Photo below is one of these fitted to my chassis (taken during strip-down for restoration)
  7. When you say 'sometimes nothing' do you mean not even any click from the solenoid? If that is the case then it is either the ignition switch or the solenoid (or the wiring between them). Just because the solenoid is new does not mean it is not faulty. There have been a lot of repo parts on the market that are not that good!
  8. Thanks for pointing this out Jonathan. I have revised my thread title
  9. Tracsport | Type 9 Is this what you are looking for?
  10. How much alteration to the axle width can you do before also having to change the half shafts?
  11. Gordon, I would need to get my rebuild progressed a bit further to be 100% sure. The wheels I have at the moment are 14 x 6.5 with the inside rim 108 mm from the mounting face (apologies for the mixed units!). They originally had 205 section tyres but that size is of limited availability in suitable tyres so I will probably change to 185. From memory they filled the arches OK but it is some time since the car was on its wheels
  12. Or get wheels with the correct offset for a Ford axle
  13. Gordon, the English axle on my S3 is 48.5" outside of flange to outside of flange (it is currently stripped down as part of my refurb). No idea if this is 'narrow' or otherwise. I think mine is Mk1 Escort and it is one I supplied to Caterham for modification. It is certainly the correct one for a Seven
  14. Further to the above answers from Ian and orangepeel regarding ballast resistor circuits below is an extract from a Mini wiring diagram showing such a system. The coil (36) has 2 feeds, one that feeds the reduced voltage via the resistor wire (63) which is fed from the ignition switch (35) and the other is a 12v feed that is fed from the starter solenoid (3) that is only live while cranking the engine. I may be able to find a Mini ballast resistor wire that I removed from a loom when changing to a full 12v electronic ignition

    Rivet Sizes

The tool modification I use for popper bases is a short length (5 to 6mm) of suitable diameter aluminium rod with a rivet nail sized hole through it. Slip this over the rivet nail then use gun as normal.
  16. Quite a selection here http://www.minispares.com/search/classic/trim%20clip.aspx
  17. If the bearing is spinning on the shaft, even it is only slightly, it can only get worse. A bit of Loctite 641 bearing fit on assembly may be advisable
  18. 7.2 pints (4.1 L) according to Tony Weale book. Don't know if that is with or without cooler
  19. Throwers can only be used when the shaft being sealed comes from the "inside" of the seal. Would not be possible on the propshaft as it is inserted from the "outside" of the seal
  20. Bert, I have no personal experience of such modern technology but there were a couple of threads on here recently that discussed the location of the OBD port: https://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/620r-obdii-port-connector https://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/obd-port-location-csr-260
  21. Not oiling the sealing ring before putting the filter on can make it very difficult to remove
  22. A7 OOH, It now looks to me as if you have got a later wiring loom together with an early master cylinder. My car also does not have a covered pedal box and according to the Tony Weale book the covered box was introduced in 1986 so according to that yours should have one! Are you sure the car was supplied as a CKD, i.e. all parts supplied new by Caterham (that can be checked from the chassis no.). Mine wasn't, I sourced the drive train and some of the suspension myself. You say the brake test switch works - all you are doing there is testing the bulb, that is what the switch is for. Brake failure or low fluid level will light the bulb without operating the switch.
  23. That was the standard master cylinder at the time. My 1985 S3 had the same one. I think it originated as a Vauxhall fitment and they are now unobtainable. It should have a "brake failure" switch in the side of the cylinder that the wiring connects to.
  24. If not already suggested also try Speedy Cables. They are also in Abercraf.
