  1. I used a proper square sump plug to remove it, and a cut down 10mm hex key to do it up. It does start to slip, but you can get it pretty tight. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  2. Oooh, more tools talk. It's just so thrilling. franky, you could buy a cheap tap and die set from Halfords/B&Q/Machine Mart but that would be just soooo boring. There's now an opportunity for you to spend hours looking at The Tap and Die Co, choosing a set made to your specifications in a wooden box. Hours of fun! 😬 😬 I'm not taking the p**s by the way - this is what I did whilst waiting for my car Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  3. It may be my fault - I hadn't checked properly and it may be that Halfords Advanced anti-freeze (which is what I and Bob are talking about I think) does need diluting. Just follow whatever it says on the bottle. It's possible to get Xstream Red ready diluted or undiluted so it doesn't mean there is a difference - just depends on how much you are prepared to pay for water Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  4. From memory I only had imperial drills to hand so I just kept enlarging the hole until they fitted. I seem to have more material left than you Guy, so perhaps it should be 10mm Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  5. It seems that the 'better' rear pads are often already fitted to the calipers. The 'less efficient' ones are in the bag. My Academy car didn't have any rear pads fitted, just one set in a bag so if I haven't got the right ones, it's Caterham's fault. 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  6. My understanding is that the 'new' Halfords 5 year coolant is Comma Xstream Red. It's pre-mixed, therefore there should be no need to add water. For a K-series, around 5l without a heater, 5.5l with. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  7. Oops. You weren't supposed to see that. 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  8. No carpet in the Academy cars. It's just Steve and Guy with their 'Caterham's for softies'. They've even got heaters! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  9. I think I had some time on my hands waiting for some bits to arrive 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  10. I cut a hole in the vinyl for the harness bolt to go through. This was then big enough to remove the strip (by bending). I then cut the other holes in the vinyl and cut the strip into sections to fit between the holes. I spent a disproportionate amount of time on the boot cover . I ignored the assembly guide and used the original popper holes, rather than drilling a new one in the centre of the harness bolts. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  11. It was - but the holes are small and difficult to feel through the vinyl (which isn't pre-drilled). The assembly guide says to remove the bar if you are fitting harnesses. I removed it, cut it into strips around the harness bolts and then put it back in . Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  12. Front bolt should just be the cut down (length) bolt normally used for the front cage mounting. Rear bolt is standard A-Frame mounting. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  13. Alex, I guess I was questioning the braking efficiency/ability - and I suppose it depends what pads you use. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  14. DOT 4 and 5.1 are standards and formulations. A DOT 4 fluid doesn't necessarily have a 'worse' performance than a 5.1 fluid. (See your table below Castrol Response (DOT4) has 280/190 whilst AP 5.1 is lower). I would go for Comma Coldstream coolant as I can't stand that nasty red stuff (see my post above). SRF is good fluid (I've had it in my Boxster before now) but I'm not sure how hot the (small) Caterham brakes really get. It is also particularly hydroscopic and Castrol recommend changing it every 6 months or something. It's also ~ £28/litre as against £9.99/litre for Castrol Super Reponse. 15. General advice for running in oil is cheapest possible. Then Caterham/Mobil 1 depending on choice. The winter viscosity needs to be 10 or lower from what I have read on here. Diff oil/gearbox oil - I used Caterham ones. Brake fluid - I used Castrol Super Response DOT 4. For coolant the current Caterham recommended is Comma Xstream Red, which I believe is the same as Halfords 5 year. I found some Comma Coldstream (which used to recommended) and used that as it's non-toxic. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  16. Oz7, I'll put some pics up as soon as I get the car back from Caterham. The car comes with the water temp sender all wired in (well, you need to plug the wire into the water rail but that's very straight forward). The sender gets fitted to the Apollo on assembly. The wire is already in the chassis loom and that gets connected to the sender. The other end of the wire is tie wrapped behind the dash. It's then a case of pulling the water wire from the back of the gauge, attaching the water and oil wire to the switch and the output of the switch to the gauge. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  17. Plain cylinder. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  18. It doesn't. I have an Apollo only. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  19. Indeed - if you run anti-cav (Apollo) there is a sender on the tank. Depending on where you put it, the car won't pass SVA with the switch, so I'll be fitting mine as soon as it passes (next Tuesday hopefully!) Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  20. Brave man - good luck! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  21. Guy, I agree with Andy's comments on the fuel gauge and the flasher switch (I know of a few people that have had this problem now!) The horn is *very* loud! I'd miswired the steering wheel and when I first turned the battery master switch I almost deafened myself. You shouldn't be able to find the two brown wires - they are connected to the BMS. I had this concern - don't you read my diary? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  22. I've got SPA mirrors attached to the front roll cage bars using 25mm steel cable clamps. You can make them out in these pics. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  23. I used the V7 SLR method too.... Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  24. I've got a bit left over as I didn't know where it went. Oh well, anything like this just goes on the PBC list now. I'm glad that Caterham are doing the SVA for me 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  25. Chris, When you say 'only two adjustments' do you mean only two positions of the seat? Mine's got about 10 settings, although I have the same problem as Myles in that I can't move it with the rails tightened - there's probably some stress in there somewhere that I need to sort out. I've got a 2004 Academy race chassis (lowered floor, no honeycomb) and when I asked Caterham about the issue with the adjuster handle not clearing the cross member they just told me to bend it. 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
