  1. I fitted the crinkly washer originally, but when torqued up the harnesses wouldn't turn. I left it like that for a while, but recently removed the crinkly washer as I felt that it was better (and safer) if they could turn. A number of other people have done the same. Not Grubbster though, because his turn with the washer in place! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  2. I've just bought some half doors to fit on my 2004 Academy car (I'm also going to fit a tonneau over the top so I'll be using the double durable dot things). But the real question is - how many poppers do people use on the doors to fix them to the car, and where? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary

  4. I've decided to go for it and have just ordered a passenger Tillet + fixings, 2 x U shaped floor strengthening strips + steel rivets, tonneau with race seat cut outs and half doors. I pick them up on Saturday morning and will hopefully get them fitted same day. It's only money after all 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  5. Interested in one GRP Tillet with passenger fixed runners. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  6. Caterham have confirmed that I need to rivet the U channels in place to strengthen the floor but they weren't fitted to my car because it's a race chassis and I didn't order a passenger seat. No floor honeycomb on a 2004 Academy car.... Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  7. The instructions/photos from the latest assembly guide are pretty good. You can download the guide from www.caterham.uk.com. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  8. Guy, Sealing the floor is a requirement for racing, but Caterham Midlands told us not to use silicon sealant as it's almost impossible to remove if you do need to remove the floor. They said that they could let us know what to use, but I haven't asked as I haven't got round to doing it yet! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  9. I'm probably going to fit a passenger seat (Tillet) to my 2004 Academy car (which has the lowered floor on the driver's side) but have noticed that there is no strengthening on the passenger side floor at all. Is this common to all Academy cars? If so, what have people done if they have fitted a passenger seat? The driver's side has two thick reinforcing aluminium strips. I've noticed on other cars (Guy's) that there is a L shaped reinforcing strip under the car. But on mine, there's nothing! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  10. I made the mistake of trying to polish my bonnet last week. Started with Belgom Alu - that was fine, but it left the usual black residue. I then wiped on some Vienna Lime (dry) and although it may have helped, it didn't seem the miracle I was expecting . Is there a certain technique? Do you just polish it over the black marks, or should you dampen the cloth? I know there was a long thread about using rotary polishers a while ago but it didn't really conclude - anyone use a rotary polisher on alu? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  11. Peter, I was also pondering this - plus the fact that at 90 mph it's pretty windy and there's always the concern about being hit by stones etc.! I think I'm going to go for half doors (really for the same reasons of visibility etc.) and probably a tonneau. Wind deflectors are a further option if needed. I know that Dougie (Highlander) raced like this in 2003 and was very pleased with the set up. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  12. Guy, Quick - edit that message before anyone spots your stupid mistake. You typed 'trailer' instead of 'drive' - what were you thinking of?? 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  13. Why don't you get Caterham to sort it at the PBC? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  14. I put it with the open (grooved) side inwards as well. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  15. Much as I hope it will work out the way Guy suggests, I'm concerned it won't. I've seen a couple of letters recently complaining that dealers are demanding replacement of pumps etc. (at your cost) in order to honour the warranty in future. The alternative is to get it looked at by an independent garage... EDIT: I assume at 60K miles, it won't be under warranty anymore anway! 16. Personally, I'm sure it would be fine. I got slightly less 'strict' about torques as I went through the build (the front wishbones are almost impossible to get a torque wrench on once the engine is in and car is on the ground). I'd leave it at 45lbft. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  17. Top mount 45lbft (61Nm from memory), bottom mount 40lbft. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  18. It's a Cupra, not a Cupra R is that right? And is it X, Y or 51 reg? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  19. Agree with sentiments on warming up - I wait until the oil gets > 60 degress at least, which can take quite a long time (around 20 mins) at the moment.... Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  20. I did 20 miles under 5K, then under 6.25k for the next couple of hundred. Oil change, then it's just the limiter that's stopping me..... Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  21. It is possible to change it with the box in situ (Grubbster (Steve) is an expert on doing this!) but as you just bought in from CML, I suggest you take it back there and ask them kindly to fix it for you. 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  22. Don't set them off in an enclosed garage with the bonnet off. My ears were ringing for hours Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  23. Just to confuse, you can then wire the starter button to either accessory (position 1) which will allow you to turn the starter over without the ignition on (I just did this), or position 2, which will then only allow you to turn the starter motor when the car should actually start 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  24. Great Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  25. I decided to use axle stands on full extension in the end. It had the advantage of meaning that I could lower the car on my own, just using a trolley jack rather than having to get 4-6 people round to lift it off the trestles!!! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
